Flu Likely to Impact Students and Faculty

Flu is widespread both in Minnesota and across the country. The state health department is recommending that those who are experiencing flu symptoms (fever about 100 degrees F with a cough or sore throat) stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever passes. For most that has meant staying home for 3-5 days.

Students are being told to stay home (off-campus if possible) if they are experiencing flu symptoms (see AugNet for the message to students) to help prevent the spread of the virus.

It is very important for the overall health of the campus that those with flu stay home. For that reason, we ask the following:

-- If you are experiencing flu, please contact your department chair, your dean and stay home.
-- Faculty and departments should develop a basic plan for how faculty absences will be handled (activities on moodle, independent student work assignments,or colleagues filling in, etc.)
-- Please do not penalize students who miss class because they have the flu. Not all students will have a doctor's note because many clinics are encouraging people with "normal" flu symptoms to stay home. It is important that faculty are flexible with all students who are ill in helping them make up work/class.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Keeping Track of Auggies

Beware Stubby Glasses (and Poor Lineups)

The recent focus of New York Times columnist David Brooks (January 11, 2013, Beware Stubby Glasses) is a new book, The Behavioral Foundations of Public Policy. Augsburg Psychology Professor Nancy K. Steblay and Professor Elizabeth F. Loftus of UC-Irvine are co-authors of a chapter in the edited volume. The chapter, "Eyewitness Identification and the Legal System," summarizes recent applications of memory science to law enforcement practice and legal policy.

Free Futon Frame & Mattress Box Spring

I recently moved and have a couple of items I am giving away for free to anyone who can come pick them up from my South Minneapolis home:

1 black metal full size futon frame (mattress not included), which is about 11 years old and a bit beat up, but still functional.

1 queen size box spring, which is 6 years old. The cloth sides have cat claw marks, but the wood is sturdy.

Contact moralesj@augsburg or x1792 if you have questions or are interested.
