Congratulations to Joe Buchman
Congratulations to junior Joe Buchman (Chemistry) for being awarded an Honorable Mention in the Goldwater Scholarship Awards.
This year, 282 scholarships were given to sophomores and juniors in the U.S. The Goldwater Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,123 mathematics, science, and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. Almost all of the scholars intend to obtain a Ph.D. as their degree objective. In addition to those receiving the scholarship, 145 students were named Honorable Mention recipients.
Joe's research proposal is titled, "Using Dendrimer-based Magnetic Nanoparticles as Drug Delivery Systems to Target Cancer Cells." He is a Sunquist Scholar, member of Tri-Beta Honors Biology Society and Augsburg Chemical Society, Supplemental Instructor in both Chemistry and Biology and an Augsburg Tutor. Also during his time at Augsburg he has received various awards and scholarships in the sciences and been on the Dean's List all semesters. He aspires to work with medical nanotechnology as a research scientist.
The Scholarship Program honoring Senator Barry M. Goldwater was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award of its type in these fields.
Again, our congratulations to Joe!

D. E. Green Poems Chosen for Public Display
Professor Doug Green (D. E. to his fans) has had two poems selected for imprinting on the sidewalks of Northfield, MN.
The Arts and Culture Commission (ACC) of Northfield, in partnership with the Friends and Foundation of the Library, has announced the winners of the city's second annual Sidewalk Poetry Contest. From the 82 poems submitted for judging, ten poems were selected for imprinting in city sidewalks. Two of these ten poems belong to D. E. Green. Here they are:
Tread lightly here:
move through
the world so softly
you do not disturb
the dragonfly at rest.
Why are your eyes
cast down? Look up
and listen: The world
offers its own poetry.
So, when D. E. tries to tell you that his work isn't set in stone, remind him of these poems.
