Mardi Gras Madrigal: Free for Auggies w/Student ID

Every spring at Augsburg College, the Goliard Society of Medievalists hosts a big party to celebrate the midwinter carnival before Lent. It's Mardi Gras Madrigals! Huzzah! This annual event always features jugglers and musicians, storytellers and poets, and a full medieval feast eaten without utensils, of course.

This year's Mardi Gras Madrigals will feature the internationally acclaimed Rose Ensemble. Founded in 1996, The Rose Ensemble reawakens the ancient with vocal music that stirs the emotions, challenges the mind, and lifts the spirit. The Saint Paul, Minnesota group tours internationally with repertoire spanning 1,000 years and 25 languages.

It will also feature the midwest premier of 15th-century comedy, "The Farce of the Fart." Directed by Nathan Keepers, formerly of Theatre de la Jeune Lune, this touching and moving theatrical piece deals with the conflicts of marital life, and the eternal question: "who farted?"

Join us for high and low culture! Mardi Gras Madrigals takes place on Tuesday, February 21st, in Hoversten Chapel. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Box office opens at 6 PM.

Tickets are $20. FREE for Augsburg students with ID.

Wolke Named MIAC Athlete of Week

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2012/2/13/mtrak021312.aspx?path=mtrack

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College men's track and field sprinter Rick Wolke (SR, Belle Plaine, Minn.) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, it was announced on Monday.

Wolke claimed two individual event victories at the St. John's University Invitational on Saturday, winning the 60-meter dash in a personal-best 7.02 seconds, while winning the 200-meter dash in 22.54 seconds. He was also part of a 1,600-meter relay squad that claimed an event win in 3:31.89.

Wolke's 200-meter time is currently the fastest among MIAC athletes, while his 60-meter dash time is second-fastest. Wolke also has the 12th-fastest time in the conference in the 400-meter dash (51.91 seconds). His 60-meter dash time is currently tied for 35th-fastest among NCAA Division III sprinters nationally.

It is the third time Wolke has earned MIAC Athlete of the Week honors, after earning the honor twice last year -- once as an individual, the other as part of a relay. In his Auggie career, Wolke has earned All-MIAC individual and relay honors four times, including last year's conference title as part of the outdoor 400-meter relay. He has earned All-MIAC honorable-mention individual and relay honors eight times. He qualified for the NCAA Division III outdoor national championships in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes in 2010.

The Auggie men's track and field team competes at the St. Olaf Tostrud Classic this Saturday (2/18).

Tesema Named to USTFCCCA All-Academic Team

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2012/2/13/mcc021312.aspx?path=mcross

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College men's cross country student-athlete Micheale Tesema (SO, Burnsville, Minn.) was named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's Division III Men's Cross Country All-Academic Team, it was announced recently.

Tesema is an undecided major at Augsburg with a 3.3333 grade-point average. To earn inclusion on the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team, student-athletes must have a grade-point average of 3.30 or above, while also placing in the top 35 at their NCAA regional cross country meet.

Tesema had a breakout campaign for the Auggies in 2011, as the team's top-finishing runner in six of the seven races this season. He recorded three 8,000-meter personal-best times this season, including a 26:05 time at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, where he placed 14th to earn All-MIAC honors. The 26:05 time reflected a 41-second improvement in his 8,000-meter time from his previous personal best in 2010.

He earned all-region honors with a 26th-place, 26:08 finish at the NCAA Division III Central Regional at Wartburg (Iowa). He finished among the top 50 runners at each of his six 8,000-meter events this season, including a second-place finish at the Wisconsin-Parkside Lucian Rosa Invitational and a 13th-place finish at the St. Olaf Invitational.

Tesema also competes on Augsburg's track and field team.

Schulz Named MIAC Athlete of Week

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2012/2/13/whoc021312.aspx?path=whockey

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College goalie Brianna Schulz (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Hockey Athlete of the Week, it was announced on Monday.

Schulz had an 86-save performance in Augsburg's loss and tie to Bethel over the weekend. She collected a career-high 53 saves and allowed just two goals in Augsburg's 2-1 loss at Bethel on Friday, then claimed 33 saves and allowed one goal in a 1-1 tie with the Royals on Saturday at Ed Saugestad Rink.

In 14 games this season, Schulz has recorded the most saves of any MIAC goalie (524), while her .932 save percentage is fourth-best among MIAC goalies (overall stats) and 12th-best among NCAA Division III goalies nationally. She has recorded 35-plus saves in nine of her 14 games this season.

Under second-year head coach Michelle McAteer, Augsburg stands at 5-9-7 overall, 2-9-3 in MIAC play, with two weekend series remaining in the regular season. It's the second time an Auggie has earned MIAC Women's Hockey Athlete of the Week honors; forward Rachel Hennessy (FY, Williston, N.D.) earned the honor on Jan. 9.

This weekend, the Auggies face St. Thomas in an MIAC series. Saturday's (2/18) game is at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink, and Sunday's game (2/19) is at 1 p.m. at the St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn. The game at St. Thomas was moved from Friday to Sunday in a change from previously published schedules.

Khadija's Tragedy: Update

Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far to help Khadija's cousins. Yesterday we passed the halfway point in our goal. Details below:

Our colleague in custodial services, Khadija Dida, has experienced a deplorable tragedy. Her cousin, a driver for a game park in northern Kenya, was brutally murdered in an attack on Swiss tourists last fall, leaving a widow and four children with no income. Please help Languages and Cross-Cultural Studies faculty collect funds to support the daughter Farida, a third-year college student, and two young sons Yusuf and Mohamed. Public schooling in Kenya is not free. One year of tuition for all three is only $1000. Please call x 1292 to make your pledge or send a check made out to Frankie Shackelford and marked "Khadija's cousins" to CB 27.
