Creating an Inclusive Campus – Call for Proposals

This three-day annual conference will be held May 22-24 and is designed to feature key developments in fulfilling our commitment to intentional diversity and global learning at Augsburg College. It includes an opening session focused on one aspect of creating an engaged, inclusive learning community, and concurrent session tracks devoted to:

Engaging all students,
Embedding diversity and global learning in the curriculum, and
Developing our community.

The third day consists of half-day workshops for faculty and staff to focus on setting departmental goals and action plans for creating inclusiveness. The conference is co-sponsored by CTL, the Office of International Programs, Human Resources, Student Affairs, and General Education.

We invite you to submit a proposal for a 90-minute session related to any of the 3 tracks. Please provide a title and list of presenters, along with a 150-200 word description of the session you would like to facilitate. Submit your proposal to Velma Lashbrook (lashbroo@augsburg.edu) by April 1.

The Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat

The third annual Scholarly Writing Retreat will be held at Dunrovin Retreat Center near Marine on St. Croix from 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 29 to 1:00 pm on Thursday, May 31. Initiated by Jessica Nathanson, the retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Some come to plan an approach to a new project to be completed over the summer; others use it as an opportunity to finish articles they have been working on during the year. Those interested in participating should contact Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu). Registrants are accepted on a first come-first serve basis

CTL Grant Application Due Dates

Faculty Summer Scholarship Grant Applications due March 15
Two Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants ($4000) and two Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants ($2000) are available to support faculty summer scholarship activities. Instructional & Course Design Grant Proposals due March 15
Up to eight Instructional and Course Design Grants ($3000 each) are available to support faculty summer course design activities, using L. Dee Fink's Creating Significant Learning Experiences and D. Randy Garrison & Norman D. Vaughan's Blended Learning in Higher Education. The purpose of these grants is to support the development of instructional design skills, as well as their application to a specific course. Tim Pippert and Cari Maguire serve as consultants for grant recipients. Applications are due no later than March 15. Blended Learning Series

Blended learning has come to mean everything from web-enhanced face-to-face learning to, but not including, courses that are fully online. Integrating online technologies can enhance and enrich learning; online tools also help differentiate instruction. A recent meta-analysis reported by the U.S. Department of Education found that blended learning produced higher performance on learning outcomes than either online or face-to-face learning.

The Blended Learning Series, co-sponsored by IT, is offered from 8:30-10:00 on Third Wednesdays in Lindell 202, and includes the following remaining spring workshops:

English Teaching Assistants Wanted in China

Augsburg's partner college, the United International College (UIC) in Zhuhai, China, is recruiting college graduates from Augsburg to assist in teaching English to undergraduate students. Augsburg graduates in any discipline may apply for a one year teaching assistantship (TA) to begin in August of 2012. Responsibilities include tutoring, reviewing papers and leading co-curricular club activities. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 and an excellent command of written and spoken English. The Staff Senate invites the community to nominate staff in order to acknowledge their accomplishments and contributions. The recipients of the Staff Recognition Award will be recognized at the Staff Appreciation Event, March 8th.

To nominate a member of the staff, please complete the Nomination Form, including two letters of recommendation. The nomination form and letters are due by THIS Friday, February 17, at 4:00pm to Missy Motl (CB 314).

This award is intended to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission statement of the college through their actions. Lake Calhoun Polar Bear Plunge

Greetings Augsburg Community,

It is I, Officer Bob Peterson, your favorite Public Safety Officer, here to let you know that it's that time of year again my teammates the "Masons of Minnesota" and I will be participating in the Polar Bear Plunge. The Polar Bear plunge is an event sponsored by the Minnesota Law Enforcement Association to raise money for the Minnesota Special Olympics.

The Special Olympics is an organization that helps individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities through organized sporting activities.

This year will be our second year participating in the Polar Bear Plunge. In 2011 our team raised $6,200 dollars. This year we have set our goals higher, we have committed ourselves to be an official sponsor. Our goal for 2012 is to raise a minimum of $20,000 dollars in pledges. We are moving steadily towards our goal thus far; the Masons of Minnesota have raised $5,659 dollars for this event! Even better yet, we have also spoken with Minnesota Masonic Charities and have secured a grant of $10,000 dollars which brings our pledge total to $15,659 dollars!

As I mentioned our team's goals are higher, and we need your assistance. If you would like to support us by making a tax deductible monetary pledge please visit the link listed below.

We are always looking for plungers! If you would like to participate by joining our team to "Take the Plunge" please contact me via email. The plunge will take place at Thomas Beach at Lake Calhoun on Saturday March 3rd, 2012 the exact plunge time is to be determined.

Whole Leaders See Things Whole, Tom Morgan, Feb 16

Augsburg's Center for Leadership Studies invites you to attend a workshop entitled "Whole Leaders See Things Whole," presented by Tom Morgan.

This workshop, first presented in our series last winter, is back by popular demand in an expanded version that allows more time for exploration and discussion. Morgan will introduce a framework for thinking about our lives as a set of relationships among three dimensions—identity, purpose, and stewardship—each with its own needs, desires, and preoccupations. While these dimensions can pull us in different directions, when we are at our best, they offer us complementary perspectives that allow us to see things whole.

In this workshop, you will complete the Seeing Things Whole Profile, a survey designed to take a multi-dimensional snapshot of your life and well-being. The profile helps you explore your strengths within the three dimensions and can give you perspective around challenges you face.

You will also receive a workbook, WholeLife Aspirations and Goals, to help examine how your life purpose connects to your life choices. The workbook offers a powerful exercise for clarifying what is important to you and what you plan to do to make your dreams a reality.

Morgan is the executive director of the Augsburg Center for Faith and Learning and professor of business at Augsburg College. He has served as a member of the steering committee for the Faith in the City Collaborative since its inception and serves on the boards of the Augsburg-Fairview Academy, Seeing Things Whole, and Select Learning Resources.

Mardi Gras Madrigal: Free for Auggies w/Student ID

Every spring at Augsburg College, the Goliard Society of Medievalists hosts a big party to celebrate the midwinter carnival before Lent. It's Mardi Gras Madrigals! Huzzah! This annual event always features jugglers and musicians, storytellers and poets, and a full medieval feast eaten without utensils, of course.

This year's Mardi Gras Madrigals will feature the internationally acclaimed Rose Ensemble. Founded in 1996, The Rose Ensemble reawakens the ancient with vocal music that stirs the emotions, challenges the mind, and lifts the spirit. The Saint Paul, Minnesota group tours internationally with repertoire spanning 1,000 years and 25 languages.

It will also feature the midwest premier of 15th-century comedy, "The Farce of the Fart." Directed by Nathan Keepers, formerly of Theatre de la Jeune Lune, this touching and moving theatrical piece deals with the conflicts of marital life, and the eternal question: "who farted?"

International Buddhist Teacher, 7 TONIGHt

The Diamond Way Buddhist group is excited to be hosting Dilia Navarro, a Buddhist teacher from Venezuela, tonight (Monday) night from 7 to around 9 pm in Oren Gateway Center 100. She'll give an introductory talk into Buddhism, answer questions, and lead a meditation.

Dilia is a lay (non-monastic) practitioner who practices a style of Buddhism which originated in Tibet.

Please note that in an earlier announcement, it incorrectly promoted it as Tuesday the 13th (doesn't even exist). She is at Augsburg on Monday, however, she will speak on Tuesday at 4 pm at the University of Minnesota, Coffman Union Room 319 and again that night at 8 pm at the Diamond Way Buddhist Center, 1701 West Lake St. In the spirit of Valentine's Day, she will be talking on Love and Partnership. There will be some carpooling from campus, please let me know if you would like a ride.

And you can always get your dose of Dharma and meditation every Monday from 10:20-10:50 (Chapel time) in Si-Melby (Athletics building) room 206. Folks from the Diamond Way center take turns giving 10 minute talks on the Dharma (teachings) and guide a 15-20 minute meditation.

Congratulation to the Augsburg Asian Student Association (AASA) on the annual Lunar New Year celebration. AASA hosted the event on Friday, February 10. The food, cultural entertainment and activities to celebrate the Year of the Dragon were fantastic. Thanks to AASA and the Pan-Asian Student Services (PASS)Office.

Tragedy in Khadija's Kenyan Family

Our colleague in custodial services, Khadija Dida, has experienced a deplorable tragedy. Her cousin, a driver for a game park in northern Kenya, was brutally murdered in an attack on Swiss tourists last fall, leaving a widow and four children with no income. Please help Languages and Cross-Cultural Studies faculty collect funds to support the daughter Farida, a third-year college student, and two young sons Yusuf and Mohamed. Public schooling in Kenya is not free. One year of tuition for all three is only $1000. Please call x 1292 to make your pledge or send a check made out to Frankie Shackelford and marked "Khadija's cousins" to CB 27. We're nearing the halfway mark! Thanks to all who have made contributions so far.

I am remodeling my kitchen, and in a few weeks, will have a dishwasher and cabinets for sale. The dishwasher is a Whirlpool, almond color, works great (only available because I am switching to black appliances).
