Teaching and Learning
Ideas about Inclusiveness
This series of conversations is designed to help faculty and staff understand how to create an inclusive learning community that values all of its members. It includes discussions of teaching, advising, and coaching skills; and dialogues about specific differences and how they impact a sense of inclusiveness. This series includes a number of well-received sessions presented at the Creating and Inclusive Campus Conference last May.
The remaining spring sessions will be held on Mondays 12:00-1:15.

Creating an Inclusive Campus Call for Proposals
This three-day annual conference will be held May 22-24 and is designed to feature key developments in fulfilling our commitment to intentional diversity and global learning at Augsburg College. It includes an opening session focused on one aspect of creating an engaged, inclusive learning community, and concurrent session tracks devoted to:
Engaging all students These sessions explore student differences and what we can do to ensure that all students feel included and receive the support they need to be successful.
Embedding diversity and global learning in the curriculum These sessions examine what departments are doing to address diversity and global learning in their courses and programs.
Developing our community This track focuses on faculty, staff, and administrator skills and practices, and what we can do to ensure inclusiveness across the campus.
The third day consists of half-day workshops for faculty and staff to focus on setting departmental goals and action plans for creating inclusiveness. The conference is co-sponsored by CTL, the Office of International Programs, Human Resources, Student Affairs, and General Education.
We invite you to submit a proposal for a 90-minute session related to any of the 3 tracks. Please provide a title and list of presenters, along with a 150-200 word description of the session you would like to facilitate. Submit your proposal to Velma Lashbrook (lashbroo@augsburg.edu) by April 1.
Speaking of Scholarship TODAY

Core Curriculum and Graduation Skills Workshops
Core Curriculum and Graduation Skills Workshops
AugCore is Augsburg's general education curriculum. This series introduces the curriculum, the first year Augsburg Seminar, the graduation skills, the concept of vocation, and the Keystone Seminar. The four graduation skills critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, writing, and speaking are embedded in every curriculum. Anyone who teaches a course with the embedded skill is expected to attend the appropriate workshop. These workshops, co-sponsored with General Education, help prepare faculty to understand the curriculum and effectively teach the graduation skills. Spring workshops will be held on Tuesdays, 3:00-5:00 (except the last one).

This series of workshops focuses on Augsburg's Model of Diversity and Global Learning and how it is being used to help embed diversity and global learning in the curriculum and co-curriculum. These sessions will be held from 3:15--5:00 on Mondays.

Thinking About Teaching and Advising
Modeled after the popular Speaking of Scholarship Series, these presentations and conversations are designed to share what we are learning about teaching and advising. The intent is to increase awareness of teaching innovations on campus and learn from each other's experiences.

Well-Being Series
CTL sponsors a series focused on well-being. It includes a broad look at well-being based on Rath & Harter's book Well-Being: The Five Essential Elements. This monthly series is held 12:00-1:30 pm on the second or third Friday in the Augsburg Room, and includes a copy of the book and a diagnostic. It consists of the following remaining sessions:

General Announcements
Want to be a Peace Scholar?
Undergraduate students are invited to apply for the Peace Prize Forum Peace Scholars program. Two students from Augsburg will be selected to participate in the program with seven scholars from the four other colleges in The Peace Prize Forum consortium. The scholars will participate in a six-week summer school program at the University of Oslo, Norway, designed to deepen their understanding of issues related to peace, justice, democracy, and human rights. The scholars will participate in the Peace Prize Forum and will be advocates for the annual forum and other peace activities on the Augsburg campus.
Criteria and Application:
Strong academic record with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
1,000 word essay articulating the applicant's interest in peace issues, evidence of commitment to peace study and/or activism, and goals for being a peace scholar.
Open to full-time first year, sophomore or junior undergraduate students.
Two letters of recommendationone from a faculty member and another from either a faculty or staff member.
Applications are due February 20, 2012.

Apply to be an Interfaith Scholar
The Interfaith Scholars are a group of students who are interested in exploring the religious diversity of the Augsburg student body, the wider Twin Cities community, and the United States through inter-religious dialogue and action. These students earn 1.0 upper division credit in the Religion Department (REL 407/408), and receive a $1,000 scholarship.
This group meets twice monthly for an academic seminar and for interfaith service learning projects. We invite religious believers from a variety of traditions as well as the non-religious to apply in order to converse respectfully with others about what one believes, why it matters and how it propels us to service in the world.
Who is eligible?
- Current students who have completed Religion 100, have an interest in interfaith dialogue, and would be able to participate the entire 2012-2013 academic year.

Aug Grads-English Teaching Assistantships in China
Augsburg's partner college, the United International College (UIC) in Zhuhai, China, is recruiting college graduates from Augsburg to assist in teaching English to undergraduate students. Augsburg graduates in any discipline may apply for a one year teaching assistantship (TA) to begin in August of 2012. Responsibilities include tutoring, reviewing papers and leading co-curricular club activities. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 and an excellent command of written and spoken English. Free Lockers Available for Students
Campus Activities and Orientation has a limited number of lockers that students can reserve for their use for the academic year. These lockers are completely free and are located on the ground floor of Science Building. Lockers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and priority is given to students who commute from off-campus. Nominations Needed for Staff Recognition Awards
The Staff Senate invites the community to nominate staff in order to acknowledge their accomplishments and contributions. The recipients of the Staff Recognition Award will be recognized at the Staff Appreciation Event, March 8th.
To nominate a member of the staff, please complete the Nomination Form, including two letters of recommendation. The nomination form and letters are due by THIS Friday, February 17, at 4:00pm to Missy Motl (CB 314).
This award is intended to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission statement of the college through their actions. 13th Annual Augsburg Leadership Awards Nominations
Nominations are now being accepted for the 13th annual Augsburg Leadership Awards! Mardi Gras Madrigal: Free for Auggies w/Student ID
Every spring at Augsburg College, the Goliard Society of Medievalists hosts a big party to celebrate the midwinter carnival before Lent. It's Mardi Gras Madrigals! Huzzah! This annual event always features jugglers and musicians, storytellers and poets, and a full medieval feast eaten without utensils, of course.
This year's Mardi Gras Madrigals will feature the internationally acclaimed Rose Ensemble. Founded in 1996, The Rose Ensemble reawakens the ancient with vocal music that stirs the emotions, challenges the mind, and lifts the spirit. The Saint Paul, Minnesota group tours internationally with repertoire spanning 1,000 years and 25 languages.
It will also feature the midwest premier of 15th-century comedy, "The Farce of the Fart." Directed by Nathan Keepers, formerly of Theatre de la Jeune Lune, this touching and moving theatrical piece deals with the conflicts of marital life, and the eternal question: "who farted?"
Join us for high and low culture! Mardi Gras Madrigals takes place on Tuesday, February 21st, in Hoversten Chapel. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Box office opens at 6 PM.

Called to Lead Seminar - Spring 2012
Once again the Augsburg Center for Faith and Learning and the Center for Leadership Studies are collaborating on offering our signature series, Called to Lead, in spring 2012. This series, designed for people at all stages of their lives and careers is an opportunity to reflect on questions such as "Where am I going? Am I called to lead? What are my next steps in life?," and many others.
The series will run for four weeks on Tuesday mornings from 7:30 to 9:00 am, beginning April 17. A continental breakfast will be served each week. It is a time to reflect and discuss in a small group setting with one of our three facilitatorsJack Fortin, Tom Morgan, and Norma Noonan.

Susie Mechtel is Speech Meet Finalist
Congratulations to Susie Mechtel, who was a finalist in persuasive speaking at yesterday's Twin Cities Forensic League tournament at Normandale Community College. In her two preliminary rounds of competition, Susie finished 2nd out of 14 contestants from schools that included Normandale, MSU-Mankato, the University of Northern Iowa, South Dakota State University, and Southwest Minnesota State.
