CCHP Convocation this Weekend
All students faculty and staff are encouraged and invited to attend the CCHP convocation with Malidoma Patrice Some on Friday 2/11 from 3:30 - 5 pm and/or Saturday 2/12 from noon - 1 pm in the Chapel.
Malidoma means "be friends with strangers." Dr. Some travels throughout the country bringing his message of hope, healing and reconciliation. He is the author of several books which will be available for purchase and signing. He will sign books Friday at 5 pm and Saturday at 11:30 am.

Social Entrepreneurship Survey
Dear Current Augsburg College Student:
We are MBA students working on our MBA Capstone Project (MBA 580) with Dr. Bruce Batten (Associate Director of MBA Program).
Augsburg is considering developing a new multidisciplinary program offering in Social Enterprise/Social Entrepreneurship. As part of a feasibility study we are conducting a survey to gauge your interest in socially oriented businesses and careers. Social entrepreneurs are individuals with innovative solutions to society's most pressing social problems. Rather than leaving societal needs to the government or business sectors, social entrepreneurs find what is not working and solve the problem by changing the system, spreading the solution, and/or persuading entire societies to take new leaps.

Scholarly Writing Retreat
Dunrovin Retreat Center, May 16-18, 2011
The Center for Teaching and Learning invites faculty to participate in the second annual Scholarly Writing Retreat at Dunrovin. The retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Last year, many participants came specifically to plan an approach to a new project; it was an opportunity to focus new ideas so that participants could spend the summer further developing these projects. And for some, it was a chance to finish articles that they had been working on during the year; one person, for example, used the time to complete a piece for publication.

"I can honestly say that I was able to get more quality writing done in the 48 hrs. we were there than any time since my sabbatical."
"The group that went to Dunrovin was wonderfully supportive of each other, and the environment seemed to make everyone's work productive."
The retreat will take place Monday, May 16 at 10 am through Wednesday, May 18 at 3pm. There are 15 openings. First come, first served - those who attended last year are welcome to sign up again. There will be no charge for participants. Please email hedstrom@augsburg.edu to sign up.

Tutors Needed
We are currently looking for students interested in volunteering their time and talents by tutoring adults from the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Tutoring will occur on Tuesdays-Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 in Foss.
We are looking for students from all scholarly disciplines to tutor. This is a great opportunity for students to meet adults in the community and to not only refine communication and teaching skills, but to engage with adults from a variety of ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds.
The Trinity-Augsburg Partnership (with the help of the Sabo Center and the Bonner Program) is making this program possible.

Staff Development Series begins February 15
Creating a Culture of Innovation and Excellence
Developing Your Strengths
This spring, CTL is launching the first of three parts of a development series designed for academic and administrative staff. The first set of workshops will deal with different aspects of creating a culture of innovation and excellence; providing you with a model or framework for thinking about the topic, conversations about what it means in practice, and exercises to help you begin to apply it to your work. The sessions are held from 3:00-5:00 pm every other Tuesday during the regular academic year and once a month during the summer.
The first session will focus on discovering and developing your strengths. In preparation, you will need to pick up a copy of Strengths Based Leadership from Sarah Hedstrom in the CTL area, and complete an online inventory. Please bring your results to the session.

Sabo Scholars Applications: Feb 24 Deadline
SABO SCHOLARS/SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE for 5 Juniors who demonstrate an interest and commitment to engagement in the political process, public policy issues and careers in public service. Each Sabo Scholar receives a $2000 scholarship [divided equally between the 2 semesters].
Expectations of Sabo Scholars include collaborating with Representative Martin Sabo, Sabo Professor Garry Hesser, and Senior Faculty Fellows to identify and create opportunities for Augsburg students to engage more fully in public policy issues, the political process and exploring career in public service. In addition, the Sabo Scholars help to shape the present endeavors and future direction of the Sabo Center. The Scholars meet monthly with Representative Sabo, Sabo Professor Hesser, Sr. Fellows & local alums and persons engaged in public service, policy related work and political process. The deadline for application is February 24.

Update on Study Abroad in Egypt
Given recent events in Egypt, the Office of International Programs staff, including Augsburg Abroad, wanted to update the campus community on our plans for the faculty-led program set to depart for Egypt in May (led by Professors Phil Adamo and Mohamed Sallam). Our office has been monitoring the situation carefully and wants to assure everyone that the safety and security of students and faculty studying abroad is our office's highest priority.
The U.S. State Department issued a Travel Warning on January 31, 2011, to provide citizens with information on the changing security situation in Egypt. They recommend that U.S. citizens avoid travel to Egypt due to ongoing political and social unrest, and suggest that U.S. citizens currently in Egypt consider leaving as soon as they can safely do so. The situation in Egypt is changing on a daily, even hourly basis and there is no way to determine how long demonstrations will go on or what the result will be. Since the faculty-led group isn't set to depart for Egypt for several months, we continue to monitor State Department recommendations in relationship to our program plans.
If the Travel Warming remains in place on March 1, the program will be canceled. If the Travel Warning has been lifted by that date, staff in our office will continue to monitor the situation through our local travel provider, other local sources, international media, and the US State Department. We will not hesitate to cancel or change part or the entire program, if needed, to secure the safety and security of students and faculty.
In the event that our office cancels the program, students who have applied and been accepted will not be held financially responsible for any cancellation costs, and will be offered the opportunity to participate in other Augsburg summer study abroad programs. Any students interested in exploring other study abroad options should contact the Augsburg Abroad office at abroad@augsburg.edu .

Nominate a colleague for a Staff Appreciation/Outstanding Staff Award!
The Outstanding Staff Award is to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission of the college through their actions. Recipients consistently go above the call of duty to provide service to others and/or make innovative and outstanding contributions to enhance the objectives of their department or the Augsburg Community.
Outstanding Staff Award nominees must have a complete nomination packet that includes:

At least TWO letters of recommendation
The nomination and one of the recommendations may be from the same individual; however, staff members may not nominate themselves for this award, and current Staff Senate members are not eligible for nomination.
Division vice presidents are asked to nominate a minimum of two staff members from their division, but any current staff, faculty, or student may also nominate individuals or write a letter of recommendation.
Letters of recommendation should specifically describe how the nominated staff member meets the criteria stated above.

Free Lockers Available for Students
Campus Activities and Orientation has a limited number of lockers that students can reserve for their use for the academic year. These lockers are completely free and are located on the ground floor of Science Building. Lockers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and priority is given to students who commute from off-campus.

Scholastic Connections Applications are Available
Scholastic Connections is a scholarship and mentorship program for undergraduate students of color (American Indian, Hispanic/Latino, Pan-Afrikan, and Pan Asian) at Augsburg College. Students who are successful in their application process and are selected to participate, receive a $5000 scholarship and are paired with a successful alum of color that serves as mentor for the Scholar.
Seven "new" Scholars will be selected for the program for 2011-12.
Eligibility Criteria:
Current Augsburg student or advanced-standing transfer student
Demonstrated financial need
Demonstrated leadership ability or potential
Demonstrated community involvement on or off campus
GPA of 2.0 or higher

Also, I am getting ready to renew my membership to the Motherhood Initiative for Research and Community Involvement (formerly ARM), and if I join institutionally, I will get 5 free memberships that can be used for those of you who might want to submit work to their journal or conferences. Fleece Donations Wanted for Homeless Families
Please help support Augsburg's Special Education Department, along with special education students involved with Public Achievement at Fridley Middle School, by donating fleece fabric material that will be used to create blankets. Monetary donations are also welcome to go towards the purchase of fleece material that will be bought from fabric shops. The blankets created by the students will then be donated to homeless families in the area. Now until February 26, 2011 donations can be dropped-off in the Education Department office suite located in Sverdrup Hall's lower level.

TRiO/SSS Summer Bridge selects 25 first-year TRiO students to get a head start on their Augsburg education. During this five-week residential program, students take two college courses for credit, and attend academic support seminars, workshops, and other activities to help provide for a smooth transition to Augsburg in the fall. Summer Bridge participants also participate in TRiO/SSS for the rest of their enrollment at Augsburg.
Augsburg TRiO/SSS started in 2001 and is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and Augsburg College. TRiO/SSS annually provides individual and group services to 160 students so that they develop the skills and motivation necessary to achieve a bachelor's degree.
RPMs will support the efforts of the TRiO/SSS program to provide a quality summer residential and academic experience for program participants that meet the goals established in the TRiO/SSS federal grant. The role in the residence hall is to facilitate and introduce incoming TRiO/SSS students to a healthy living experience. The RPM is not a 24-hour police officer, but a 24-hour role modelauthoritative without being authoritarian.
There are four openings (2 male, 2 female) for this live-in position. This position may be considered an internship for transcript notation or academic credit. The RPM position is full-time, with variable hours from July 10 - August 11, 2011, and with additional training dates in May or June, and July.

Study Abroad Writing Contest--Cash Prizes
Here's a good opportunity for students to share their experience abroad and possibly win some cash....

For over 20 years, Transitions Abroad has been hosting an annual student writing contest for all currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students, students who have graduated within the past year, and students currently on leave from school.
For this year's contest, the winning student submission will be awarded $500 in cash, the second place winner will be awarded $150, and the third place winner $100. In addition, the winners will be featured in the April Webzine dedicated to study abroad and educational travel.
All winning pieces will be published on the TransitionsAbroad.com website. Runner-up winners will be awarded $50 and will also be published on TransitionsAbroad.com.
The contest deadline is March 8, 2011 with no entry fee. Winners will be chosen on or about March 15th, 2011. Winners will be notified by phone, mail, or e-mail by April 1, 2011 for publication by May 1, 2011 or at such time as all winners have received and cashed payment.
Submissions that have been published at home institutions during the current academic year also qualify.

Pink Weekend
This coming weekend, the Augsburg Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in conjunction with the Athletic Department will be hosting its winter Pink Zone Weekend. This event helps raise money and awareness to support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The weekend includes four different sporting events where fans are encouraged to come wearing pink.
The women's hockey team kicks off the weekend off with a home game against St. Olaf on Friday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the men's and women's basketball teams will be hosting a double header against Bethel starting at 1 p.m., followed by a men's hockey game at 7 p.m.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be selling breast cancer awareness t-shirts in the Christensen center on Thursday and Friday -- all proceeds will go to support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

For any parent, the thought of having a child taken away is a horrific notion. Yet all across America, children whose families can no longer provide proper support are being put into foster care. Heather Rae brings to the screen her own story of a family affected by foster care due to drug and alcohol addiction in the deeply touching and extremely personal Family: The First Circle. With her nephew having spent time in the foster care system, her brother in prison and her sister-in-law recovering from drug rehabilitation, Rae looks not just at her own family, but at others whose children are similarly effected. She follows the police, who see firsthand the terrible conditions in which some children live, and those who volunteer to foster the children in hopes of providing a better life for them. Incredibly poignant and touching, Family: The First Circle, shows a small slice of the life that effects nearly 300,000 children a year, making this a film that demands to be seen. (Jacob Brades)
Randy Redroad, producer, cinematographer and editor of First Circle, wrote and directed "The Doe Boy," which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, winning the NHK Award. Redroad also directed "Haircuts Hurt," "High Horse" and "133 Skyway."

Active Minds is an award-winning, national student-run mental health awareness, education, and advocacy group. Students who participate in Active Minds work to change the conversation about mental health on college campuses by promoting open, enlightened discussion, increasing student awareness of mental health issues, and providing information and resources. Active Minds has 300+ chapters on college campuses nationwide.
