Minneapolis Declares Snow Emergency
Message from Minneapolis regarding snow emergency:
Today is Monday, January 31st, 2011 and Minneapolis has declared a Snow Emergency.
Parking restrictions begin at 9 p.m. Monday.
During the Snow Emergency, Winter Parking Restrictions are not in effect beginning at 4 p.m. today (Monday). They will resume again at 8 a.m. Thursday, February 3, 2011.

Additional Hours in the Writing Lab
Because of incredibly heavy use, the Writing Lab has received some additional funding in order to provide additional hours of writing tutoring this Winter trimester/Spring semester. We will try additional late morning/early afternoon hours on M/T/R and then evaluate at the end of the term to determine whether or not these times serve students well. The schedule, thus, is as follows for the remainder of this academic year:
Monday - 6:30-9 PM AND 11 AM-1:30 PM
Tuesday - 3-5:30 and 7:30-10 PM AND 12 NOON-2:30 PM
Wednesday - 3-5:30 and 6:30-9 PM
Thursday - 3-5:30 and 7:30-10 PM AND 12 NOON-2:30 PM
Friday – 5-7 PM
Sunday - 5:30-8 PM
The Writing Lab is located in Lindell Library, ground floor, left of the circulation desk.
These additional hours will be operative starting next Monday, Jan. 31.

Biology Faculty Candidate Seminar - THURSDAY
Biology Faculty candidate Dr. Catherine Kirkpatrick will present: "Not Just Glue: Roles of Proteoglycans in Development and Disease"
Cells in a multicellular organism are connected with each other through the medium of the extracellular matrix. This external environment, synthesized by the cells themselves, typically provides structural support for cells and tissues, while allowing neighboring cells to communicate with one another. In animals, one abundant component of the extracellular matrix is a class of carbohydrate-modified cell surface proteins called heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs). HSPGs interact with many other extracellular and cell surface proteins such as growth factors and signaling receptors, and thereby regulate cell-cell communication. Studying HSPGs in mammals is complex, but research using model organisms like the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has helped to reveal how these molecules function. I will describe some of my research on the roles of Drosophila proteoglycans in cellular signaling during development, and how disruptions in proteoglycan function can lead to disease in mammals.

Social Entrepreneurship Survey
We are MBA students working on our MBA Capstone Project (MBA 580) with Dr. Bruce Batten (Associate Director of MBA Program).
Augsburg is considering developing a new multidisciplinary program offering in Social Enterprise/Social Entrepreneurship. As part of a feasibility study we are conducting a survey to gauge your interest in socially oriented businesses and careers. Social entrepreneurs are individuals with innovative solutions to society's most pressing social problems. Rather than leaving societal needs to the government or business sectors, social entrepreneurs find what is not working and solve the problem by changing the system, spreading the solution, and/or persuading entire societies to take new leaps.

Staff Development Series begins February 15
Creating a Culture of Innovation and Excellence
This spring CTL is launching the first of three parts of a development series designed for academic and administrative staff. The first set of workshops will deal with different aspects of creating a culture of innovation and excellence; providing you with a model or framework for thinking about the topic, conversations about what it means in practice, and exercises to help you begin to apply it to your work. The sessions are held from 3:00-5:00 pm every other Tuesday during the regular academic year and once a month during the summer.
The first session will focus on discovering and developing your strengths. In preparation, you will need to pick up a copy of Strengths Based Leadership from Sarah Hedstrom in the CTL area, and complete an online inventory. Please bring your results to the session.

The GRE is Changing: What you Need to Know
The GRE Revised Test is set to launch this August. The revised test features a more test-taker-friendly design, new types of questions that feature real-life reasoning situations, and a scoring system that makes it easier to compare your scores with other candidates.
However, taking the revised test means you won't see your scores until mid-November. If you have a November or pre-November application deadline, you should take the current test before August, 2011.

CTL Night at the Theatre
The Living Newspaper Project
Thursday, February 10, 2011, 7:00 pm
The Center for Teaching and Learning invites Augsburg faculty and staff to attend and bring a guest to the Theatre Department's production of The Living Newspaper Project on February 10th at 7:00 pm in the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater.
Inspired by the original Living Newspapers of the Federal Theater Project in the 1930s, this student-devised performance will use a range of nonfiction sources to explore a current social issue. Ensemble members will gather interviews, articles, and multimedia—and generate their own writing—to create and stage a totally unique piece of socially conscious theatre. The production is directed by Sarah Myers.
Attendees are invited to a panel discussion, talk-back with the student actors, and a dessert reception immediately following the production. Please join us for this event. A limited number of free tickets to this showing will be available to the first faculty and staff contacting Sarah Hedstrom at hedstrom@augsburg.edu .
Tutors Needed
We are currently looking for students interested in volunteering their time and talents by tutoring adults from the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Tutoring will occur on Tuesdays-Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 in Foss. We especially need tutors on Tuesdays.
We are looking for students from all scholarly disciplines to tutor. This is a great opportunity for students to meet adults in the community and to not only refine communication and teaching skills, but to engage with adults from a variety of ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds.
The Trinity-Augsburg Partnership (with the help of the Sabo Center and the Bonner Program) is making this program possible.

Fleece Fabric Donations Wanted
Please help support Augsburg's Special Education Department, along with students involved with Public Achievement at Fridley Middle School, by donating fleece material that will be used to create blankets. Monetary donations are also welcome to go towards the purchase of fleece material from fabric shops. The blankets created by the students will then be donated to homeless families in the area. Now until February 26, 2011 donations can be dropped-off in the Education Department office suite located in Sverdrup Hall's lower level.

Thru Another's Lens - Wednesday, February 2
The Department of Residence Life is continuing its safe dialogue series for community members on issues of human diversity. The overarching goals of this series are to help people understand each other across difference as well as inspire all to take action for positive social change.
The kick off to this series occurred on Wednesday, November 3 at 6:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100. This first session looked to develop a common conceptual understanding of oppression dynamics, broadly, allowing the series to take single-issue focus for the rest of the academic year. Now, each session will focus on a particular social identity category while also considering how various oppression dynamics intersect (e.g., class, disability/nondisability, ethnicity, gender, race, religious & spiritual identity, sexual orientation). It is not required to have attended this session on Wednesday, November 3 to attend this or future sessions.
This third session in the series will take place on Wednesday, February 2 at 6:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100 and will focus on race, racism, and ways to take action against racism in everyday life.
So, if you want to join a discussion where you will leave with some tangible takeaways that you can apply, then come join us!

Pay It Forward - Spring Break to D.C.
Looking for a way to make an impact? Like travel, service, making friends and t-shirts with witty slogans? The Pay It Forward Tour hosted by Students Today Leaders Forever (STLF) may be the trip for you!
The Pay It Forward Tour (PIF) is a multi-day, multi-city alternative spring break experience that engages students in service, leadership, travel and service in a new city each day, learning about social issues, building lasting relationships, and making a commitment to continued action when they return home. All STLF College Pay It Forward Tours travel to six cities across the country over the course of nine days over spring break. Each Tour consists of up to 40 students. It will be a spring break you will always remember.
The FIRST EVER Augsburg College PIF Tour will take place this Spring Break 2011, from March 11 - March 19. We will be going to Washington, D.C. by way of 5 additional exciting cities including Kalamazoo, MI and Philadelphia, PA! The cost of the Tour is $450, which covers all travel, lodging, two t-shirts, 1 or 2 meals per day, and even some tourism. There is is also some financial aid available.

STLF is an official 501(c)(3) non-profit based out of Minneapolis, MN. It was formed in 2003 by 4 college Freshman at the University of Minnesota looking for a way for our generation to make a positive impact on the world. Wolke Named MIAC Athlete of Week

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College men's track and field sprinter Rick Wolke (JR, Belle Plaine, Minn.) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Track Athlete of the Week, it was announced on Monday.
At Saturday's Wisconsin-Stout Warren Bowlus Open, Wolke claimed a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a personal-best 22.83-second effort, while finishing third in the 55-meter dash with a personal-best 6.59-second time.
Wolke's 200-meter time is currently the fastest among MIAC athletes, while his 55-meter time only trails teammate Nick Ward (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn.), who recorded a 6.49-second effort on Jan. 21 at the St. Thomas Invitational. Wolke also has the third-fastest time in the conference in the 400-meter dash, a 51.28-second clocking at the St. Thomas meet.
The MIAC Athlete of the Week honor is the first for Wolke, who has earned two All-MIAC and six All-MIAC honorable-mention honors in his career. Last season, Wolke earned a trip to the NCAA Division III outdoor national championships in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes.
The Auggies return to action this Saturday (2/5) at 11 a.m. at the Bethel University Invitational in Arden Hills, Minn.
