Student-Faculty Interaction

This series of conversations is designed to help faculty and staff understand how well we engage students, explore how we can leverage our strengths to have a more significant impact, and examine our most important opportunities for improvement. Over the year, we will look at overall results and then look more closely at each of the five factors measured by NSSE. Every academic department should have a representative attend these sessions. Tutors Needed
We are currently looking for students interested in volunteering their time and talents by tutoring adults from the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Tutoring will occur on Tuesdays-Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 in Foss.
We are looking for students from all scholarly disciplines to tutor. This is a great opportunity for students to meet adults in the community and to not only refine communication and teaching skills, but to engage with adults from a variety of ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds.
The Trinity-Augsburg Partnership (with the help of the Sabo Center and the Bonner Program) is making this program possible.

Social Entrepreneurship Survey
Dear Current Augsburg College Student:
We are MBA students working on our MBA Capstone Project (MBA 580) with Dr. Bruce Batten (Associate Director of MBA Program).
Augsburg is considering developing a new multidisciplinary program offering in Social Enterprise/Social Entrepreneurship. As part of a feasibility study we are conducting a survey to gauge your interest in socially oriented businesses and careers. Social entrepreneurs are individuals with innovative solutions to societys most pressing social problems. Rather than leaving societal needs to the government or business sectors, social entrepreneurs find what is not working and solve the problem by changing the system, spreading the solution, and/or persuading entire societies to take new leaps.

Staff Development Series begins February 15
Creating a Culture of Innovation and Excellence
Developing Your Strengths
This spring, CTL is launching the first of three parts of a development series designed for academic and administrative staff. The first set of workshops will deal with different aspects of creating a culture of innovation and excellence; providing you with a model or framework for thinking about the topic, conversations about what it means in practice, and exercises to help you begin to apply it to your work. The sessions are held from 3:00-5:00 pm every other Tuesday during the regular academic year and once a month during the summer.
The first session will focus on discovering and developing your strengths. In preparation, you will need to pick up a copy of Strengths Based Leadership from Sarah Hedstrom in the CTL area, and complete an online inventory. Please bring your results to the session.

Scholarly Writing Retreat
Dunrovin Retreat Center, May 16-18, 2011
The Center for Teaching and Learning invites faculty to participate in the second annual Scholarly Writing Retreat at Dunrovin. The retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Last year, many participants came specifically to plan an approach to a new project; it was an opportunity to focus new ideas so that participants could spend the summer further developing these projects. And for some, it was a chance to finish articles that they had been working on during the year; one person, for example, used the time to complete a piece for publication.
Comments from last year's attendees:
"I can honestly say that I was able to get more quality writing done in the 48 hrs. we were there than any time since my sabbatical."
"The group that went to Dunrovin was wonderfully supportive of each other, and the environment seemed to make everyone's work productive."
The retreat will take place Monday, May 16 at 10 am through Wednesday, May 18 at 3pm. There are 15 openings. First come, first served - those who attended last year are welcome to sign up again. There will be no charge for participants. Please email hedstrom@augsburg.edu to sign up.

Study Abroad Writing Contest--Cash Prizes
Here's a good opportunity for students to share their experience abroad and possibly win some cash....

For over 20 years, Transitions Abroad has been hosting an annual student
writing contest for all currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students,
students who have graduated within the past year, and students currently on
leave from school.
For this year's contest, the winning student submission will be awarded $500
in cash, the second place winner will be awarded $150, and the third place
winner $100. In addition, the winners will be featured in the April Webzine
dedicated to study abroad and educational travel.
All winning pieces will be published on the TransitionsAbroad.com website.
Runner-up winners will be awarded $50 and will also be published on
TransitionsAbroad.com.
The contest deadline is March 8, 2011 with no entry fee.
Winners will be chosen on or about March 15th, 2011.
Winners will be notified by phone, mail, or e-mail by April 1, 2011 for
publication by May 1, 2011 or at such time as all winners have received and
cashed payment.
Submissions that have been published at home institutions during the current
academic year also qualify.

Be a Residential Peer Mentor for TRiO/SSS Students
Do you want to have fun and make a difference for new first-year students this summer? Augsburg TRiO/Student Support Services (TRiO/SSS) is now accepting applications for the position of Summer Bridge 2011 Residential Peer Mentor (RPM).
TRiO/SSS Summer Bridge selects 25 first-year TRiO students to get a head start on their Augsburg education. During this five-week residential program, students take two college courses for credit, and attend academic support seminars, workshops, and other activities to help provide for a smooth transition to Augsburg in the fall. Summer Bridge participants also participate in TRiO/SSS for the rest of their enrollment at Augsburg.
Augsburg TRiO/SSS started in 2001 and is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and Augsburg College. TRiO/SSS annually provides individual and group services to 160 students so that they develop the skills and motivation necessary to achieve a bachelors degree.
RPMs will support the efforts of the TRiO/SSS program to provide a quality summer residential and academic experience for program participants that meet the goals established in the TRiO/SSS federal grant. The role in the residence hall is to facilitate and introduce incoming TRiO/SSS students to a healthy living experience. The RPM is not a 24-hour police officer, but a 24-hour role modelauthoritative without being authoritarian.
There are four openings (2 male, 2 female) for this live-in position. This position may be considered an internship for transcript notation or academic credit. The RPM position is full-time, with variable hours from July 10 - August 11, 2011, and with additional training dates in May or June, and July.

Fleece Donations Wanted for Homeless Families
Please help support Augsburg's Special Education Department, along with special education students involved with Public Achievement at Fridley Middle School, by donating fleece fabric material that will be used to create blankets. Monetary donations are also welcome to go towards the purchase of fleece material that will be bought from fabric shops. The blankets created by the students will then be donated to homeless families in the area. Now until February 26, 2011 donations can be dropped-off in the Education Department office suite located in Sverdrup Hall's lower level.

The Outstanding Staff Award is to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission of the college through their actions. Recipients consistently go above the call of duty to provide service to others and/or make innovative and outstanding contributions to enhance the objectives of their department or the Augsburg Community.
Outstanding Staff Award nominees must have a complete nomination packet that includes:

The nomination and one of the recommendations may be from the same individual; however, staff members may not nominate themselves for this award, and current Staff Senate members are not eligible for nomination.
Division vice presidents are asked to nominate a minimum of two staff members from their division, but any current staff, faculty, or student may also nominate individuals or write a letter of recommendation.
Letters of recommendation should specifically describe how the nominated staff member meets the criteria stated above.

Free Lockers Available for Students
Campus Activities and Orientation has a limited number of lockers that students can reserve for their use for the academic year. These lockers are completely free and are located on the ground floor of Science Building. Lockers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and priority is given to students who commute from off-campus.

Nobel Peace Prize Forum - Register Now

Registration is available on line until Feb. 21st at: http://www.luther.edu/peaceprize/registration/ Registration fee for all Augsburg participants (students, faculty, staff) is $25.00. Through the on line registration you will sign you up for bus transportation from Minneapolis and Rochester to Luther College, admission to all sessions, meals, and lodging.
The bus will load at Augsburg at 1:45 pm on Friday and return to campus at approximately 7:30 PM on Saturday. Students will be housed with Luther students in residence halls. Non-traditional students have the option of staying with Luther students in a residence hall or staying at a motel at their own expense. Faculty and staff will stay in a motel at their own expense. Green's Wintery Words & Waterman's Poetic Pigs
English Professor Doug Green read his poems as part of the Northfield Arts Guild's Winter Words program, last Saturday, 5 Feb, at the NAG Gallery on Division Street. He was featured in an article on the event in the 29 January edition of the Northfield News <http://www.northfieldnews.com/news.php?viewStory=56105>, the print version of which included his poem "Chicago Heat."
Professor and Poet Cary Waterman will be reading at Micawber's Books <www.micawbers.com>, 7 pm on Tuesday, 1 March, in a program celebrating the new anthology, LOW DOWN AND COMING ON: A FEAST OF DELICIOUS AND DANGEROUS POEMS ABOUT PIGS, edited by James P. Lenfestey and designed by Scott King of Red Dragonfly Press. Professor Waterman will read along with fellow contributors Naomi Cohn, Jim Lenfestey, and Susan Thurston.
The book is a corpulent, beautifully designed hardcover anthology of 133 poems (and one recipe) by 103 poets (and one architect), edited with an introduction by James P. Lenfestey. The anthology is dedicated to poet and essayist Bill Holm, whose idea it was before he died unexpectedly in 2009. Eric Utne, founder of the Utne Reader, says this anthology finally "proves that pigs do fly." Editor Lenfestey declares, "These are poems you can EAT!" Lenfestey has gathered together poems from around the world and throughout literary time, including poems by a Nobel Prize winner (Pablo Neruda, in a new translation), two US Poet Laureates (Donald Hall, Ted Kooser), five state poet laureates (Robert Bly, Jane Gentry, William Kloefcorn, David Lee, Linda Pastan) and one Provincial treasure (John B. Lee). Plus nearly 100 others, some published here for the first time, others multiple blue ribbon winners. All the poets seem to find in our close porcine cousins something both delicious and dangerous, "so right it's wrong," as one poet says of his gourmand love.

A Night - Hip Hop Dancers

For A Night, a talent / variety show put on by AASA, I am trying to put together a group of dancers to perform a hip hop dance. There will be a choreography to teach moves if we need some help with that. We will all be deciding on song choice and other aspects of the group. Indigenous Rights Presentation by Magne Ove Varsi
Human rights advocate Magne Ove Varsi of the GALDU Centre for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Kautokeino, Norway will be presenting the history, challenges, and progress toward "Sami Self-Determination"on Tuesday, February 15 from 1:45-3pm in Old Main 105. His visit is part of KEY 480, a keystone seminar that explores issues in global interdependence. Free and open to the public.
