Safe Spring Break Programs

Spring Break is coming soon and with that being said EP!C will be around to put on "Safe Spring Break" programs. EP!C is sponsored by the Center of Counseling and Health Promotion. Our mission is to provide resources and promote healthful living for all students by encouraging peers to talk honestly about, seek professional advice, and develop responsible habits and attitudes towards the use or non-use of alcohol. Our program is a fun and interactive way to present to peers the choices when it comes to drinking. Our programs are usually an hour long and we prefer at least 10 viewers at each presentation (because it does involve interaction between audience members). For more information or there are any sports teams/student groups/classes that are interested in having us come in to do a presentation, email Hien at nguyenh1@augsburg.edu.

Call for Proposals for Summer Scholarship Grants

Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants and
Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants
Summer 2011

Purpose
The purpose of the Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants and the Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants is to support well-defined faculty scholarship projects. The expectation is that receipt of the grant will make it possible for faculty to accelerate completion of a significant project.

Description and Eligibility
Two $4,000 Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty who are in at least the second year of their contract are eligible to apply. Faculty who receive a Dean's Summer Scholarship Grant are not eligible to teach more than one course during the summer.

Two $2,000 Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time faculty are eligible to apply; priority is given to tenure-track faculty who have not received this grant in the previous three years.

Application Process
Please submit a one-to-two-page description of the project, including a summary of work already accomplished and a timetable and plan for completion. Explain how receipt of the Summer Scholarship Grant will accelerate project completion. Please attach a curriculum vitae along with any directly relevant supporting materials. Grant recipients submit a progress report in fall 2011 and a short final report by Feb. 1, 2012.

Submit applications as email attachments no later than March 14, 2011 to Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu)in the Center for Teaching and Learning. Applications will be reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee, and awards will be announced in early April.

Call for Instructional and Course Design Proposals

Instructional and Course Design Grants
Summer 2011

Purpose
The purpose of CTL’s Instructional and Course Design (ICD) Grant is to support the design or redesign of courses in undergraduate or graduate programs, and to enhance the instructional design capabilities of Augsburg faculty. The expectation is that the grant will make it possible for faculty to devote the time necessary (at least a full-month equivalent) to create a meaningful design or redesign of an Augsburg course.

Description and Eligibility
Six $4000 grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time faculty are eligible to apply; priority is given to projects which will impact a significant number of students or are central to the effectiveness of a program, and to faculty who have not received this grant in the previous three years. Faculty who receive this grant are not permitted to teach more than one course during the summer.

Grant recipients are expected to complete readings related to designing significant learning experiences in face-to-face and online contexts, participate in a one-day orientation and training session and on the Moodle resource site, meet with a consultant at least twice over the summer, and share their syllabi at the end of the summer and their assessment and reflection on the course after it is implemented. Tim Pippert and Cari Maguire will serve as ICD consultants for 2011-2012.

Application Process
Please submit a one-to-two-page description of the project, including: the course number and title, a profile of the students expected to take the course, a rationale for the course design/redesign and for the development of your design skills, project objectives, and a timetable and plan for completion. Grant recipients are expected to submit the syllabus for the new or revised course by September 1, 2011 and a short final report, including an assessment and reflection on the course implementation by May 15, 2012.

Handling Student Reports of Sexual Assault

Nominate a colleague for a Staff Appreciation/Outstanding Staff Award!

The Outstanding Staff Award is to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission of the college through their actions. Recipients consistently go above the call of duty to provide service to others and/or make innovative and outstanding contributions to enhance the objectives of their department or the Augsburg Community.

Outstanding Staff Award nominees must have a complete nomination packet that includes:
• Nomination Form
• At least TWO letters of recommendation

The nomination and one of the recommendations may be from the same individual; however, staff members may not nominate themselves for this award, and current Staff Senate members are not eligible for nomination.

Division vice presidents are asked to nominate a minimum of two staff members from their division, but any current staff, faculty, or student may also nominate individuals or write a letter of recommendation.

Letters of recommendation should specifically describe how the nominated staff member meets the criteria stated above.

Fleece Donations Wanted for Homeless Families

Please help support Augsburg's Special Education Department, along with students involved with Public Achievement at Fridley Middle School, by donating fleece fabric material that will be used to create blankets by the students. Monetary donations are also welcome to go towards the purchase of fleece material from fabric shops. The blankets will then be donated to homeless families in the area. Donations can be dropped off in Sverdrup Hall's lower level Education Department office suite until February 26, 2011. Thanks!

Be a Residential Peer Mentor for TRiO/SSS Students

Do you want to have fun and make a difference for new first-year students this summer? Augsburg TRiO/Student Support Services (TRiO/SSS) is now accepting applications for the position of Summer Bridge 2011 Residential Peer Mentor (RPM).

TRiO/SSS Summer Bridge selects 25 first-year TRiO students to get a head start on their Augsburg education. During this five-week residential program, students take two college courses for credit, and attend academic support seminars, workshops, and other activities to help provide for a smooth transition to Augsburg in the fall. Summer Bridge participants also participate in TRiO/SSS for the rest of their enrollment at Augsburg.

Augsburg TRiO/SSS started in 2001 and is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and Augsburg College. TRiO/SSS annually provides individual and group services to 160 students so that they develop the skills and motivation necessary to achieve a bachelor’s degree.

RPMs will support the efforts of the TRiO/SSS program to provide a quality summer residential and academic experience for program participants that meet the goals established in the TRiO/SSS federal grant. The role in the residence hall is to facilitate and introduce incoming TRiO/SSS students to a healthy living experience. The RPM is not a 24-hour police officer, but a 24-hour role model–authoritative without being authoritarian.

There are four openings (2 male, 2 female) for this live-in position. This position may be considered an internship for transcript notation or academic credit. The RPM position is full-time, with variable hours from July 10 - August 11, 2011, and with additional training dates in May or June, and July.

The Oren Gateway Center is Augsburg's newest residential facility and is a substance free environment. Open Forum: Conversation about Telling Our Story

Augsburg College is in the final rounds of interviewing for the open Media Relations Director position. This week, we have invited the two final candidates back to campus to participate in an open forum discussion about telling our story. The first of these sessions was held Tuesday, Feb. 15. The final session is Thursday, Feb. 17, 2 to 3 p.m. in The Augsburg Room.

The format of the forum is intended as a conversation, rather than a presentation or interview, and will kick off with the candidate sharing some thoughts about telling an institutional story in today's world of real-time news and social media. The remainder of the time, then, will be dedicated to an open conversation about the topic.

Additional background information about the candidate will be provided during the session.

Feminist Films for Feb: Hip Hop Documentaries

The Feminist Film Series presents HIP HOP: BEYOND BEATS AND RHYMES on Friday, February 18, from 4:30-6:30 in the Student Lounge in Christensen:

By self-proclaimed "hip-hop head" Byron Hurt, this is a "riveting documentary that tackles issues of masculinity, sexism, violence and homophobia in today's hip-hop culture." The film "provides thoughtful insight from intelligent, divergent voices including rap artists, industry executives, rap fans and social critics from inside and outside the hip-hop generation. The film includes interviews with famous rappers such as Mos Def, Fat Joe, Chuck D and Jadakiss and hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons; along with commentary from Michael Eric Dyson, Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Kevin Powell and Sarah Jones and interviews with young women at Spelman College, a historically black school and one of the nation's leading liberal arts institutions."

The bus will load at Augsburg (Minneapolis)1:45 pm and at Augsburg (Rochester) at 3:30 pm on Friday and return at approximately 6 pm and 7:30 pm on Saturday. Day students will be housed with Luther College students in residence halls. WEC and grad students have the option of staying with Luther students in a residence hall or staying in a motel at their own expense. Faculty and staff will stay in a motel at their own expense. Filmmaker Michael King to Speak Tuesday

Emmy-winning Filmmaker Michael King will speak on campus on Tuesday Feb. 15.
Emmy Award-winning writer/film director/producer MICHAEL KING will speak at chapel on Tuesday 2/15, followed by a screening of one of his documentary films--Rapping With Shakespeare.

Always focused on the making of socially conscious films, King will discuss what informs and directs his art.
ATTEND THE SCREENING of Rapping With Shakespeare in Sateren Auditorium from 11:50 - 1:20 PM--open to all students. Q & A to follow--be prepared to ask questions about the movie industry.
King will speak to the Augsburg Jazz Band at 3:10 pm about the role of music in film.

For any parent, the thought of having a child taken away is a horrific notion. Yet all across America, children whose families can no longer provide proper support are being put into foster care. Heather Rae brings to the screen her own story of a family affected by foster care due to drug and alcohol addiction in the deeply touching and extremely personal Family: The First Circle. With her nephew having spent time in the foster care system, her brother in prison and her sister-in-law recovering from drug rehabilitation, Rae looks not just at her own family, but at others whose children are similarly effected. She follows the police, who see firsthand the terrible conditions in which some children live, and those who volunteer to foster the children in hopes of providing a better life for them. Incredibly poignant and touching, Family: The First Circle, shows a small slice of the life that effects nearly 300,000 children a year, making this a film that demands to be seen. (Jacob Brades)

Randy Redroad, producer, cinematographer and editor of First Circle, wrote and directed "The Doe Boy," which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, winning the NHK Award. Redroad also directed "Haircuts Hurt," "High Horse" and "133 Skyway."

Active Minds Informational Meeting Tomorrow 6 p.m.

Active Minds is an award-winning, national student-run mental health awareness, education, and advocacy group. Students who participate in Active Minds work to change the conversation about mental health on college campuses by promoting open, enlightened discussion, increasing student awareness of mental health issues, and providing information and resources. Active Minds has 300+ chapters on college campuses nationwide.

Students are invited to come to an interest meeting sponsored by the Center for Counseling & Health Promotion to learn how to start a chapter on our campus. On Wednesday, February 16th, from 6-7pm in OGC 103, counselors from CCHP will provide information about starting a student-run Active Minds chapter at Augsburg. There is no obligation to join. Come for the free pizza and learn more about Active Minds. Get involved in the conversation!

The Vagina Monologues A Huge Success

For the second year in a row, Augsburg's production of The Vagina Monologues, sponsored by the Student Feminist Collective and the Anne Pederson Women's Resource Center, raised awareness about the issue of violence against women while also raising money to help an organization working to stop this violence. Thanks to the support of wonderful Auggies, parents, and friends, this year, the production raised over $777 through just two performances. The cast of the entirely student-directed and student-produced show: Halimo Abdulkarim, Chere Bergeron, Ingrid Bergland, Tescia Bratcher, Monica Brondos, Kia Burton, Tameka Colbert, Kendra Dischinger, Amal Elmi, Lucreshia Grant, Lacey Hoover, Marian Hussein, Rose Nguyen, and Gina Liddell-Westfeld. All proceeds went to Casa de Esperanza, which works to prevent violence within Latino/a communities and offers shelter to Latinas suffering domestic violence.

Movers Needed for a 2-3 Day Weekend Job

Local professor seeks two to four people to help with moving process. Movers will be expected to help pack the household and load moving truck during a two-day period, and unpack the truck and arrange the boxes at a storage facility on the third day.

Must be able to work long hours and lift heavy objects. May require background check.
