Message: Former Augsburg coach Ed Saugestad to receive Hobey Baker Legends of Hockey Award

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/022707saugestad.html

MINNEAPOLIS (2/27/07) -- Former Augsburg College men's hockey coach Ed Saugestad has been recognized for his lengthy and outstanding service to college hockey by being named the 2007 recipient of the Hobey Baker Legends of Hockey Award, it was announced on Tuesday.

The award, presented by the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation, will be presented to Saugestad at the annual banquet on May 3 at 317 On Rice Park in St. Paul, Minn. The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m., with dinner and program from 7-9 p.m. Tickets for the banquet are available for purchase online at www.hobeybaker.com.

Saugestad will be honored at the May 3 banquet, along with the winner of the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to college hockey's top player. The 2007 Hobey Baker Award-winner will be named on April 6 during the men's hockey Division I Frozen Four in St. Louis, Mo., in an event televised on ESPNU at 6 p.m.

Saugestad coached Augsburg to a 503-354-21 record in a career that spanned 37 seasons (1958-1996), a win total currently second only to Don Roberts of Gustavus Adolphus (515) among Division III coaches. Saugestad, Roberts and Mike McShane of Norwich (Vt., active with 502 wins) are the only Division III coaches to have amassed more than 500 career victories.

In Saugestad's 37 years of coaching, he had only 11 overall losing seasons and just nine in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, and his Auggies won MIAC regular-season titles six years in a row (1976-77 to 1981-82). The MIAC's playoff championship trophy was christened as the Ed Saugestad Trophy in 1998.

Saugestad took teams to national postseason play on 10 occasions (nine NAIA and one NCAA), winning NAIA national championships in 1978, 1981 and 1982, finishing third in 1971 and fourth in 1975 and 1977. He was named NAIA National Coach of the Year after each of the three national championships and was MlAC Coach of the Year six times. He coached 22 All-Americans at Augsburg.

Saugestad began his Auggie coaching career while still a student at Augsburg, in 1958. He graduated with a double major in physical education and biology in 1959. He went on to earn his master's degree from the University of Minnesota in 1964. In addition to coaching hockey for parts of five decades, he also served on the Augsburg football coaching staff from 1959-84 (head coach in the 1970-71 seasons); men's athletic director from 1981-87; and during his entire Augsburg career served as an instructor in the school's Health and Physical Education department.

Saugestad was named as the 2002 recipient of the John MacInnes Award from the American Hockey Coaches Association for his contributions to the growth of amateur hockey in the United States. The state of Minnesota declared Feb. 17, 1996 as Ed Saugestad Day, in recognition of his career accomplishments.

MINNEAPOLIS (2/28/07) -- The Augsburg College men's and women's cross country teams earned Division III All-Academic Team recognition, as awarded by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, it was announced recently.

Augsburg's women's cross country squad had a team grade-point-average of 3.510 (4.00 scale), while the Auggie men had a team GPA of 3.140.

To be honored as an All-Academic Cross Country Team, teams needed a cumulative team GPA of at least 3.1. Eastern Mennonite (Va.) had the highest cumulative team GPA on both the men's (3.910) and women's (3.760) sides.

Message: Augsburg's Aaron Johnson named MIAC Men's Hockey Player of the Week
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/022707johnson.html

MINNEAPOLIS (2/27/07) -- Augsburg College men's hockey forward Aaron Johnson (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Hockey Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday.

Johnson had an eight-point weekend (four goals, four assists), as Augsburg swept Hamline over the weekend to clinch the No. 3 spot in the upcoming MIAC playoffs. In Friday's 6-3 Augsburg victory, Johnson scored the second goal of a three-goal, 32-second blitz for the Auggies midway through the second period. In Saturday's 9-2 Auggie win, Johnson tied a single-game scoring record for the second time this season with a seven-point night. He collected three goals for his first collegiate hat trick and added four assists.

He also accomplished the seven-point feat earlier this season in Augsburg's 8-0 win over Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Dec. 16, tying a school record first set in 1980. Johnson finished the regular season with 15 goals and team-highs of 27 assists and 42 points. His assist total leads the MIAC in overall stats for the second straight year, and he currently stands second in the MIAC in overall points. His goal total is fifth-best among MIAC players in overall statistics.

Johnson, a two-time All-MIAC honoree, earned a spot on the AHCA/RBK Hockey Division III All-American first team in 2005-06, and was named a Preseason All-USCHO Division III West Region honoree this season. In his career (80 games, 75 at Augsburg), Johnson now has 126 points (38 goals, 88 assists).

Augsburg (12-9-4 overall, 9-3-4 MIAC) has won seven of its last eight games, including its last four in a row. The Auggies qualified for the MIAC playoffs for the first time since the 2002-03 season, and as the No. 3 seed, will face No. 2 seed St. Thomas in a semifinal matchup on Thursday (3/1) at 7 p.m. at the St. Thomas Arena at St. Thomas Academy High School in Mendota Heights, Minn.
