Message: Road Dogs and Loners

Tim Pippert, the poet laureate of Inver Grove Heights, will be discussing the lives and survival strategies of homeless men.

The presentation will focus on road dogs and loners, two subgroups of homeless men.
Road dogs are street partnerships formed between homeless men for the purpose of companionship and protection. Their survival strategies and availability of family support will be compared to self-defined loners, those who find social isolation a necessary strategy for living on the street.

Refreshments will be served at 3:30 p.m. in Lindell 301. The presentation begins at 4 p.m..

Subject: "Invitation to Design" workshop series
Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message: Facilitated by Stu Anderson

Four workshops intended to enable faculty to use a systematic, purposeful approach to revising, creating, and maintaining learning experiences. All workshops are offered twice and are scheduled from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in Lindell 301 unless otherwise posted (dates are indicated below).

Faculty considering applying for Instructional and Course Design support for Summer 2007 are encouraged to attend.

1) How did we learn to teach? March 13 and 14. Bring your resume’ and some examples of your best (and worst, if your dare!) teaching for an exploration of how we got here and who we learned our art from. We’ll explore our approaches to creating learning experiences, how we detect that something needs to be changed, and how we proceed to change them.

2) Teaching and Brain Science –ne’er the twain shall meet? March 27 and 28. Bring what you have come to believe about brain science and learning and compare it with what some current experts have to say. How do the various ways we teach work with or against brain function? What does brain science tell us about crafting learning environments and experiences that are efficient and produce durable results?

3) Brain science, ‘best practice’, and instructional design April 9 and 10. Bring your favorite ‘best practice’ guiding principles for an exploration of the relationship between these and brain science and how this can inform intentional choice in crafting learning experiences.

4) The designing professor: changing students on purpose April 24 and 25. Bring a learning experience you’ve been working on to dip your pedagogical toes into the waters of design. We’ll work with a process that starts by identifying the change(s) we want in our students and progresses systematically (but not too fast!) to creating experiences that not only change and empower students, but also enable us to develop a habit of reflective empathy in our work.

RSVP to martin@augsburg.edu or x1229.

Subject: Zombie Prom for Free
Submitter:
Ross Murray, Campus Ministry Associate; Tutoring Services Coordinator; , Campus Ministry and Academic Skills Office

Message: My magic phone calls have become magic emails. Anyway, it means that I can pass along free musical theatre to Augsburg students (and some staff and faculty).

I have 20 tickets for Zombie Prom at the Hennepin Stages Theatre on Thursday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m. I'll give these out in singles or pairs. Students will get a preference to get the tickets, but anyone can request them.

To request one or two tickets, just email me at murray@augsburg.edu.

You might be asking yourself what the heck Zombie Prom is (I know I am). Here's the description they sent me.

Mix together the best of Little Shop of Horrors, Grease and Bat Boy, and you get Zombie Prom, the new Off-Broadway musical that has audiences rolling in the aisles. Set in the nuclear 1950s, it's just another day for the students at Enrico Fermi High until Jonny Warner, distraught after being rejected by his sweetheart Taffy, hurls himself into the local nuclear reactor. But when Jonny reappears as a nuclear zombie, the tyrannical principal Miss Strict threatens to cancel the prom rather than let him back into the school. A tragic tale of terror that will have you singing!

"A blast.... Slick fun for the whole nuclear family... If you like Grease ... you [will] love Zombie Prom." - N.Y. Daily News.
