Batalden Convocation Info for Spring Syllabi

The Batalden Convocation will be held on Friday, February 10, at 10:00 AM in the chapel.

The speaker is Dr. Carolyn Finney, author of Black Faces White Spaces.

Carolyn Finney looks beyond the discourse of the environmental justice movement to examine how the natural environment has been understood, commodified, and represented by both white and black Americans. Bridging the fields of environmental history, cultural studies, critical race studies, and geography, Finney argues that the legacies of slavery, Jim Crow, and racial violence have shaped cultural understandings of the "great outdoors" and determined who should and can have access to natural spaces.

The Office of Academic Affairs and the Center for Teaching and Learning invite your nominations for the 2017 awards for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching and Learning. Augsburg annually recognizes individuals or groups that have made exemplary contributions to creating an engaging academic learning environment through awards for teaching, scholarship, or service.

Deadline for nominations: February 20, 2017

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION:
When making a nomination in one of the following areas, please consider how the nominee has made contributions to the college that go beyond the expectations of their position.

- Distinguished Contributions to TEACHING -
Outstanding teaching encompasses many forms, pedagogies and is not restricted to the classroom. As such, nominations made in this category should demonstrate the nominee’s active engagement with students, creative approaches to instruction, ability to challenge students, and their overall passion for teaching. Up to TWO AWARDS may be given in this category, one for FULL-TIME faculty and one for ADJUNCT faculty (2 courses per term or less).

- Distinguished Contributions to SERVICE -
Nominations for this award should demonstrate the nominee’s impact on the college, community, or their discipline in a substantial and meaningful way. Nominees that impact the lives of students through supportive, thoughtful, and comprehensive mentoring and advising that go beyond the normal expectations of guiding students are eligible for this award.

- Distinguished Contributions to SCHOLARSHIP -
Nominees in this category may be recognized for a consistent record of scholarship or a single project. In recognizing multiple forms of intellectual inquiry, nominations should speak directly to both the quality of scholarship as well as its contribution to their discipline, the college, or community.

ELIGIBILITY:
All faculty or full-time staff who have been employed at the college for at least three years are eligible for the awards. Nominations may be made by any member of the college community.

SELECTION COMMITTEE:
The selection of the award recipients is a juried process. Nominations will be reviewed by an ad hoc committee comprised of members of the Faculty Development Committee, the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Deans of Arts and Sciences and Graduate and Professional Studies. The committee may, when appropriate, consider candidate’s annual reports, teaching evaluations, and other documents provided by the Dean’s office. Based on the pool of nominees, the committee has discretion to offer the awards in any combination as well as to decline to offer a specific award in a given year. The committee’s recommendation will be forwarded to the Provost for final approval.

AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT:
The awards will be announced at the Honors Convocation on April 21st and at the Faculty Recognition Luncheon on April 27, 2017. The recipient of the award for excellence in teaching for full-time will be invited to give the keynote address at the Opening Convocation in September and the adjunct faculty awardee will be invited to speak at the New Faculty Orientation in August.

URGO Summer Research Applications Available

Are you looking for a paid summer research opportunity here on campus? URGO applications for 2017 summer research are now available on the URGO website at www.augsburg.edu/urgo. All fields of study welcome!

We have multiple summer opportunities available for students.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $4,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $2,000 stipend. The program runs from May 15th – July 28th.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,000 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 1st, so start talking with your faculty before break to learn about what research is going on in your department!

New Graduate Course in Higher Education Leadership

"Leadership in Higher Education" is a new graduate course offered in the Master of Arts in Leadership program spring term 2017. It is open to any graduate student. Augsburg faculty, staff, and students are also invited to enroll as part of a graduate degree or for their own professional development.

Mini-Grants for Environmental Stewardship

Looking for students, faculty, staff who are interested in grant money for environmental stewardship! Projects could include: class learning activities, supplies for research, conferences or workshops, tangible purchases (i.e.- water fountains, compost bags, bus or nice ride passes), reuse/recycle projects (i.e.- clothing drive), or any idea you may have! Survey for Employees with Parking Permits

Thanks to the 183 employees who have a parking permit who have completed the Transit Task Force survey. For those who have not yet done the survey - there's still time!

The purpose is to learn what can help employees use transit options, and how best to use Remote Lots M and O on Franklin Avenue. The survey takes approximately 3-5 minutes to complete and closes on Friday, December 9.

Get Paid For Your Internship - Apply Now

Wouldn't it be GREAT if you could get paid to do an internship?

You may be able to do just that because of a grant awarded to Augsburg College. This program serves juniors and seniors who receive financial aid, improving their odds of graduating and preparing them to enter the workforce with real-world experience in their fields of study.

To be eligible:

* Students must be in good academic standing (2.0+ GPA)

* Students must be a college junior or senior (60 credits completed) at the time of the internship (Second semester sophomores can apply as long as they hold junior standing BEFORE the internship begins)

* Students must be eligible for financial aid (work study) Not sure if you are eligible? Email studentfinances@augsburg.edu or check your awards package

* The internship must be related to your major or career aspirations

* Internships will take place Spring 2017, Summer 2017, Fall 2017, Spring 2018

Important Changes to Daily A-mail

The Office of Marketing and Communication, which is responsible for distributing the Daily A-mail, has developed an improved process for submitting and reading posts.

New features include:
* a simplified submission interface
* an email receipt confirming each successful submission, including the full content submitted
* the ability to edit a post after it has been submitted up until the submission deadline
* the optional daily digest sent via email will now include links to each individual post.

One important change to note with the new submission process is that the deadline for submitting A-mail will change. The new deadline for inclusion in a day's A-mail will be 11:59 p.m. the day prior to publication, rather than 10 a.m. on the day of publication. This means an A-mail can be submitted at any time during the day (including before 10 a.m.) in order to show up in the next business day's A-mail.

These A-mail updates will be rolled out over the winter break in partnership with IT. As part of this transition, A-mail will not be sent on December 27-29. In addition, as always, Daily A-mail will not be sent on the dates that are College holidays, which include December 23, 26, and 30, as well as January 2.

After the transition, a new "Submit to A-mail" option will be added the left-hand navigation at inside.augsburg.edu. We expect this to be available Dec. 29. The first A-mail sent using the new submission form will be Tuesday, January 3. Submissions for the January 3 A-mail can be submitted any time after the form is available and before 11:59 p.m. January 2, 2017.

On Thursday, December 15, Einsteins will be closing at 12pm. On Friday, December 16, all Food Service Locations will be closing at 1:30 p.m. Over Winter Break, Nabo and The Commons will be closed. Einsteins will be open over break, Monday-Friday from 7:30pm-1:30pm with a Limited Menu. The Commons will reopen on Sunday, January 8, at 5pm for Dinner, and normal hours will resume for all locations on Monday, January 9.

DAPL Education Evening - Tonight from 5-7 p.m.

There will be a Dakota Access Pipeline event from 5-7 p.m. tonight in the East Commons. This event is meant to educate people in the Augsburg community about what is happening at Standing Rock as well as to show everyone how we can help support the water protectors there. There will be Indigenous and First Nation speakers, a water ceremony, and opportunities to make signs and banners that will be sent to the camp. Come stand with Standing Rock with us!

Crystal Comer Appointed to AACRAO Committee

I am pleased to announce that Augsburg's Registrar, Crystal Comer, has been appointed to the Information Systems and Technology Committee of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO). Representing more than 2600 higher education institutions in over 40 countries, AACRAO engages members in the collaborative pursuit of excellence in admissions, registration, and enrollment services by providing relevant programs, professional development tools and information resources.

This appointment acknowledges Crystal's deep dedication to improving student services, and is timely as the College moves forward with the implementation of Unit 4 software upgrade.
