2016 Annual Security Report Now Available
Augsburg College is committed to assisting all members of the Augsburg community in providing for their own safety and security. The annual security and fire safety compliance document is available on the Department of Public Safety website at:

If you would like to receive the combined Annual Security and Fire Safety Report, which contains this information, you can stop by the Department of Public Safety at 801 21st Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55454. You may also request that a copy be mailed to you by calling (612) 330-1717 or emailing Public Safety at publicsafety@augsburg.edu
The website and booklet contain information regarding campus security and personal safety topics such as: crime prevention, fire safety, public safety law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures and other matters of importance related to security and safety on campus. They also contain information about crime statistics for the three previous calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned and controlled by Augsburg College; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.
This information is required by law and is provided by the Augsburg College Department of Public Safety.
Hagfors Landscape Plans Include 90 Trees

The tree planting plan for the Hagfors Center construction site has been approved by the City of Minneapolis. Trees will begin being planted in the summer of 2017. The tree plan and a summary of this week's construction activities is posted on http://www.augsburg.edu/hagforscenter/construction-project-updates . Today's post includes the following:

Gilman Scholarship Apps Due Soon
$5,000+ for study abroad: Apps due TUESDAY!
If you receive a Pell Grant and are a US citizen, consider applying for a Gilman scholarship to win $5,000-$8,000 to study and/or intern abroad through the Gilman International Scholarship.
Deadline to apply for funds for Spring semester abroad 2017 is THIS TUESDAY October 4th.
The students who have won scholarships have asked for feedback - so please do so!
Staff advisors, including TRIO advisors and study abroad office staff, are happy to review your draft essays and give feedback.

Apply Now - Civic Studies Fellows
Civic Studies Fellows will be a group of 6 Augsburg faculty and staff and 3 community members who commit to engaging in civic studies and action for the duration of the academic year. The Civic Studies Fellows will work strategically so they can co create with others to positively impact the Augsburg community, our partnerships, and the larger landscape of civic engagement in higher education. They will strategize about Augsburg's potential to be "Big to the World" by taking leadership in the field.
The Civic Studies Fellows will commit to the following:
- To become familiar with core texts of Civic Studies and engage in discussions with the other fellows about the readings and their strategic implications.
- To be part of an action team of fellows that are working on an issue at Augsburg.
Fellows will receive a professional development stipend of $700 for Augsburg Civic Studies Fellows and $1000 for community fellows.

Last Week to Sign Up for EdTech Cohort
New full-time faculty, there is still time to sign up for the EdTech Cohort! Email Mara at ctl@augsburg.edu to sign up by this Friday, October 7.
This unique opportunity will be composed of three 90 minute face-to-face sessions (3:30-5:00 p.m. on 10/20, 11/3, and 11/17) with online activities scheduled during the intervening weeks. The goal is to familiarize new faculty with strategies for integrating Moodle and other learning technologies with their individual teaching approach. Activities will encourage participants to incorporate new strategies into their teaching preparation to avoid significantly increasing their workload.
A stipend of $200 will be awarded upon successful completion of the cohort. Any new full-time (tenure track or continuing special appointments) faculty who have joined Augsburg in the last two years are eligible to join the cohort.

NSF AugSTEM Scholarship Applications Now Open
AUGSTEM SCHOLARS PROGRAM
Applications are now open for the 2016-17 AugSTEM Program!
The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF DUE-1565060), AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of $5,000, $7,500 and $10,000 per student per year. (Differences in award amounts correspond to levels of financial need.) Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.
Eligibility:
* Enrolled full-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, chemistry, computer science, environmental studies, mathematics, or physics)
* Within 5 semesters of graduating
* Major GPA of 3.0 or higher
* U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
* Demonstrate financial need via FAFSA
APPLICATIONS DUE: OCTOBER 27, 2016
Incoming community college transfer students and Augsburg students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

Staying safer and more secure online starts with STOP. THINK. CONNECT. the simple, actionable advice anyone can follow. STOP: make sure security measures are in place. THINK: about the consequences of your actions and behaviors online. CONNECT: and enjoy the Internet.
Whether banking, shopping, social networking, tracking our health or downloading the latest app, in today's interconnected world, practicing good cybersecurity is critical. All digital citizens must learn to stay safer and more secure in their ever-expanding digital lives, including by preventing and responding to identity theft and scams, ensuring that home networks are secure, managing the security of mobile devices and teaching children to use the Internet safely, securely and responsibly. Week 1 shares simple ways we can protect ourselves and communities along with actions to take if impacted by a breach, cybercrime or other online issue. It will also examine the outlook for cybersecurity jobs and how to engage young people in pursuing careers devoted to protecting the Internet.

Faculty and Staff Training: Minimizing Unconscious Bias in Hiring
The Provost's Office, Diversity, Inclusion and Equity Committee, and Human Resources are partnering to offer a training session for faculty and staff on Minimizing Unconscious Bias in Hiring which will be held on Tuesday, October 11 in OGC 100, from 9:00 a.m. - noon.
The training will include a video and discussion facilitated by Jeffrey Cookson of Language and Culture Worldwide. We will be discussing unconscious bias and it's impact on the hiring and selection process and strategies we can use to de-bias situations.

Muslim Identities in Minnesota
Are you interested in learning about Muslim Identities in Minnesota?

In the 21st century there is a plethora of cliches, stereotypes, and over-generalizations about Muslims in Minnesota, where there are also a variety of different ways of being Muslim.
Join Professor Cawo Abdi and Ph.D. candidate Nahid Khan to explore the diversity of Muslims in Minnesota today and the many contexts shaping their lives and identities. Professor Abdi will draw on her recently published book on the Somali diaspora, Elusive Jannah, and Khan will present data from her research on the portrayal of Islam and Muslims in Twin Cities media over the last several decades.

The Registrar's Office and Student Financial Services are offering open sessions for faculty and staff advisers to learn about the new Satisfactory Academic Progress policy that was implemented this semester.
