The Civic Studies Initiative

Beginning in the 2016-17 academic year, the Civic Studies Initiative, co-sponsored by the Sabo Center, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Education Department, will acquaint the wider college and its community partners with the theory and practice of civic agency and its transdisciplinary field of Civic Studies.

The Civic Studies Initiative will include four symposia open to all faculty, staff, students, and the public. These symposia will introduce Civic Studies as presenting a different definition of citizen, citizen as co-creator, and what that implies. They will also explain how to integrate civic agency skills into courses and student activities; look at how the "democracy college" lens calls for rethinking assessment to emphasize cooperative excellence; and explore what "public scholarship" looks like with a Civic Studies lens. The first symposium will be held on Thursday, Sept. 22 from 8 to 9:30 a.m.

Another aspect of the initiative will be the selection of Civic Studies Augsburg Fellows and Community Fellows. These will be chosen from a variety of disciplines and staff units as well as community partners, forming a learning community, which will help organize the subsequent symposia, undertake more thorough study of Civic Studies, and develop projects for policy and culture change.

Learn more at the following link and stay tuned throughout the year for more details on upcoming symposia.

General Announcements

CGEE Transition Plan

I am pleased to announce a transition plan for the Center for Global Education (CGEE). This plan, which will be in place until we secure new leadership, aligns with CGEE's new organizational structure and draws upon existing staff leadership in academic and operational dimensions of CGEE's work. The plan is designed to support collaboration among CGEE, Academic Affairs, and other College offices.

Ms. Leah Spinosa de Vega, Director of Global Initiatives and Off-campus Study, will assume primary responsibility for the academic dimension of CGEE's work: Leah will oversee curricular initiatives and academic programming involving our sites, partners, exchanges, and affiliates; faculty-led programs; crisis management; and assessment. She is already centrally involved in these areas. During the interim period, she will also assume responsibility for marketing and outreach efforts.

Mr. David Hamilton, Director of Operations and Global Inclusion Initiatives, will oversee the operational and administrative areas of CGEE's work. These areas include the budgets, facilities, human resources, and legal issues necessary in maintaining our international sites. David will also assume oversight of the Customized Program Team (short-term off-campus programming) in addition to his work on global inclusion and diversity. David currently works on many of these areas daily, and previously had oversight of the Customized Programming area.

Both Leah and David will report to Nathan Hallanger, Director of Academic Administration, who will involve me and/or the other academic deans as necessary. They will, of course, have direct access to me when issues arise that require my attention and active involvement. Site Directors will work with either David or Leah, as appropriate to the issue at hand, with access to Nate and others, as needed.

I am grateful to both Leah and David for their willingness to taken on these enhanced leadership roles. Their demonstrated strengths in their respective areas, as well as their history of working effectively with other members of the Augsburg community, whether at our international sites or here in Minneapolis (or Rochester), gives me great confidence that the interim period will be smooth. I would also like to thank all the CGEE staff--truly a remarkable group of people--for their commitment to ensuring a seamless transitional experience for our students, faculty, and staff.

Help Needed for State Fair Booth Staffing

Every year Augsburg has a booth in the Education Building at the Great Minnesota Get Together August 25-Sept 5. This is a great opportunity to meet with hundreds of prospective students, alumni and current students who stop by to spin the wheel and say hello. We are still seeking coverage of some of the four-hour shifts, mostly during Labor Day weekend. Admittance into the fair is provided. Contact Katie Radford at radford@augsburg.edu if interested.
