Parking Restrictions Over the Next Two Weeks

In order to facilitate crews working on campus to prep for the Hagfors Center, there will be several street parking restrictions in effect over the next couple of weeks. Please be mindful of "No Parking" signs along these routes, and plan accordingly. Alternative parking lots for your parking pass are listed on the back of your permit.

Starting TODAY:
- The south side of 8th Street South between 20th Ave South and 21st Ave South
- The west side of 21st Ave South between 8th Street and the I-94 sound wall

Starting TOMORROW (Wednesday):
- The north side of 8th Street South between 20th Ave South and 21st Ave South

Starting Monday, April 11th:
- Both east and west sides of 21st Ave South from the sound barrier to 7th Street South

ALL of these parking restrictions will remain in effect until Monday, April 18th. We will communicate if that timeline is to be extended. Again, please watch for posted signage. All vehicles along the closed streets may be subject to a tow/relocation fee.

Summer Parking Permits Go On Sale 4/11

Hello Augsburg Community,

Summer is just around the corner and parking is on everybody's minds! Summer parking permits will be available for purchase starting next Monday, April 11th at 10am. I'd like to share some important information to you regarding summer parking, including our parking policies, who needs to purchase a summer permit, and how to obtain one.

- An Augsburg permit is required and must be displayed to park in any campus parking lot or college owned street. Parking is enforced 24/7.

- If you have purchased ANY of the following permits, you MAY use that pass to park this summer, and you will NOT be required to purchase a separate summer permit:
a) any type of permit from Fall 2015
b) any type of permit from Spring 2016
c) any type of permit from Academic Year 2015-2016

You may use these permits to park in ANY lot or college-owned street, 24/7. However, please be mindful of the Accessible Spaces, Fire Lanes, and Reserved Spaces - usage of those spaces will be patrolled and made available to only those who are authorized to use them.

- If you have since misplaced your permit, please e-mail parking@augsburg.edu to request a replacement. We will issue you a free replacement as long as you have paid for any of the above mentioned permit. These replacement permits can be picked up at the Department of Public Safety.

- If you DO NOT have any of those permits, you WILL need to purchase a Summer permit. The cost for a summer permit is $50, which will be good from May 2nd, 2016 through September 5th, 2016. This rate will not be prorated throughout the summer term. Summer permits will be usable in ANY lot, 24/7.

How to purchase a permit:

- You may purchase your permit online through Inside Augsburg > Parking Services. The following link will provide you detailed information, including some reminders and step-by-step instructions on how to register for a permit: http://www.augsburg.edu/dps/parking/register/

- Again sale begins at 10am on Monday, April 11th.

- Please allow 2-3 business days after purchase for your permit to be processed and made available for pick up. You may pick up your permit from the Department of Public Safety, located in the lobby of Urness and Mortensen Hall. Please bring a photo ID upon pick up and, as always, we are open 24/7.

Convocation Daily Schedule Change

Two upcoming events will affect the daily class schedule on April 12 and April 14.

On Tuesday, April 12, the Sverdrup Visiting Scientist Program will result in the following schedule:
1st Period 7:50-9:15 a.m. (instead of 7:50-9:30)
2nd Period 9:25-10:50 a.m. (instead of 9:40-11:20)
Convocation 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
3rd Period 12:10-1:40 p.m.
Remaining classes follow regular schedule

On Thursday, April 14, the class schedule will adjust to allow dedicated time for the Zyzzogeton research symposium. The class schedule on April 14 will be:

1st Period 7:50-9:10 (instead of 7:50-9:30)
2nd Period 9:20-10:40 (instead of 9:40-11:20)
3rd Period 10:50-12:10 (instead of 12:00-1:40)

Interested in Grad School? Sign Up for GRE Prep

Want to Go to Grad School? You May Need the GRE.

The GRE is a standardized test that is required for many graduate school applications. Augsburg College offers an eight week GRE prep course each summer for students, alumni, and staff at a cost well below those found at private test centers. This course is taught by Augsburg faculty and staff and walks students through each section of the general test. Throughout the course students complete sample test questions and receive in-depth feedback and instruction. The registration fee also includes a six-month subscription to the online GRE study tool, Magoosh.

Invitation to Participate in Relaxation Study

Are you currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student? If so, you are invited to participate in a study on the effectiveness of various relaxation methods in college students. My name is Elizabeth Whalen, and I am an undergraduate music therapy student at Augsburg College. If you participate in the study, you will be asked to receive three relaxation sessions. Each session will last a half hour, with additional time before and after the session to collect information about your mood, stress level, pain level, pulse, and breathing rate. 8th Traditional Powwow a Huge Success

The 8th traditional Powwow was a huge success on Saturday, April 2nd. Jennifer Simon did an outstanding job coordinating the event, registering drum groups and dancers, and gathering the local and Augsburg community for the celebration. Jennifer also coordinated an Augsburg American Indian alumni gathering along with honoring ten American Indian graduates. Thanks to all of the people who assisted with making the Powwow such a huge success including current students, staff, alumni, and graduates. Please join us in congratulating Jennifer and everyone who assisted!

New Process Proposed for Study Abroad/Away Courses

The Office of Academic Affairs and the Center of Global Education and Experience are working to develop and implement a new process for off-campus course approvals (international and U.S.) The new process will ensure initial screening for financial viability and institutional risk; it will also support a collaborative review (including the department and dean) to identify required resources in advance of the annual spring budget development cycle. Study abroad and study away (U.S.) courses and programs deemed viable in the initial screening by Academic Affairs and CGEE would then move through the academic approval process, if/as necessary. We expect to implement the new process toward the end of the 16-17 academic year, with a submission deadline in November 2017 for any study-away courses proposed for the 18-19 fiscal year.

PCA - Needed

PCA Position for Those Pursuing a Career in Health or Social Sciences

Hi, my name is Colby! I'm a graduate counseling student in search of hiring individuals to fulfill my staffing needs as personal care assistants (PCA). At the age of 17, I was involved in a car accident which resulted in an incomplete spinal cord injury (quadriplegia) and thus my need for PCA's. My residence is in East Minneapolis, located within walking distance of U of M-West Bank and Augsburg College. I also believe working for me as a PCA will provide one with invaluable work experience for individuals who are pursuing healthcare/helping professions.

This opportunity provides experience with assisting an individual with a spinal cord injury (SCI) with the following:

Attaining a means of exercise via standing-frame/stander, pool therapy, FES bike, E-stim unit, weight lifting, yoga, and both conventional and unconventional passive range of motion.
Learn various techniques of transferring an individual with SCI to and from wheelchair.
Learn the daily cares of an individual with high-level SCI (exercise, bathing and grooming, dressing, meal prep, dressing, skin integrity check, toileting, and transportation to and from internship, outings, etc.)
Learn how an individual who uses a wheelchair goes about living life while maximizing their independence as well as conquering environmental and societal barriers.
Learn how an individual who uses a wheelchair participates in sports (i.e. football and kickball) alongside able-bodied peers.
Gain greater ability to empathize with future clients with SCI and/or others who use wheelchairs for mobility purposes, and obtain the insights from a "client's perspective" when providing a professional service.

Starting wage for one with minimal to no experience is $12/hr.

Creating a Climate of Peace: Oil, War & Climate Change with speaker Antonia Juhasz

A talk on the effects of endless war and the fossil fuel economy on climate change, and what we can do about it.

Antonia Juhasz is a leading energy analyst, author and investigative journalist, specializing in oil. Juhasz is the author of three books: Black Tide (2011), The Tyranny of Oil (2008), and The Bush Agenda (2006). Her investigations have taken her a mile below the ocean surface in the Gulf of Mexico to the rainforests of the Ecuadorian Amazon, from the deserts of Afghanistan to the fracking fields of North Dakota, from the Alaskan Arctic to an Houston jail cell, and many more places in between. She holds a Masters Degree in Public Policy from Georgetown University and a Bachelors Degree in Public Policy from Brown University.
