Free Summer LSAT Prep Course

Interested in a free LSAT prep course? The Minnesota Pre-Law Scholars Program (MPLS) hosts one each summer. Here are the course highlights:

10-week course that meets twice a week in the evenings from end of May/beginning of June through August.

All course sessions are held at the Minnesota Law campus in Minneapolis. The course is taught by a Princeton Review instructor. The course also includes helpful info sessions and the opportunity to meet with the Minnesota Law Admissions department, Career Services, and current students & alumni.

The course is free to participants but does require a $100 seat deposit (fully refundable if the participant successfully completes the course).

Reading the Echo in Arizona: Archives Online

Lindell Library holds many treasures of Augsburg's shared history: The Echo student newspaper, back to 1898; the Augsburgian yearbook, starting in 1916; and Augsburg Now and its alumni-publication ancestors. All these and more are part of the Archives' physical collection. But what if you want to go beyond paper and page through, say, the 1983 Augsburgian — in your office, at home, or on vacation? Thanks to the library's Digital Initiative Project, begun by librarian Bill Wittenbreer in 2013, you can read many of your favorite Augsburg publications online anywhere, and more are being added all the time. Want to know more? Of course you do! Faculty and staff (and the wider Augsburg community) are invited to Bill's informative session on exploring our new Archives Web page at http://library.augsburg.edu/archives/ and all the ways you can access our digital collections. Apply for a Grant to Develop Signature Assignments

Apply by April 15, 2016

Six Stipends: $300

In Fall 2015, the faculty endorsed a plan to require each major to incorporate a Signature Assignment into their junior or senior coursework. This curricular commitment grows out of the belief that every student should be challenged to complete a significant assignment that develops and showcases writing and critical thinking skills. In addition, the assignment could potentially engage students with other skills and sensibilities named in the undergraduate institutional student learning outcomes (iSLOs), such as information literacy, integrative thinking, ethical reasoning, intercultural awareness, global learning, and/or problem solving.

The Directors of Assessment and General Education announce a grant opportunity to support the development of these signature assignments. Six stipends of $300 will be awarded on a competitive basis to faculty interested in developing signature assignments for their programs. Following the ICD workshop model, grant recipients will work collaboratively to develop major assignments, as well as to help define the College-wide expectations and outcomes for these assignments. Participation in this cohort will help shape future curricular recommendations.

Participants should be available either the last week of May or first week of June 2016 for three 90-minute group sessions.

Please submit a one-page proposal outlining your interest in this program to Jacqui deVries devries@augsburg.edu and Kristen Chamberlain chamberk@augsburg.edu by April 15, 2016. The proposal should articulate initial ideas about what the assignment might look like and where in the curriculum it could be located. The proposal could also include ideas about how the assignment would address additional iSLOs (beyond critical thinking and writing).

The next sets Gen Ed/CTL workshops on critical skills and college readiness is "Active Reading: How to Teach It Well (AVID)."

Explore ways to help students plan for reading, connect reading to prior knowledge, and increase reading comprehension. Skills such as 'marking the text,' constructing/deconstructing reading prompts, and 'pausing to connect' will be modeled and discussed.

All faculty are invited to attend. These workshops, organized by Gen Ed and CTL, promise useful teaching strategies for both new and seasoned faculty, taught by our own local experts. Today's workshops will be led by Lori Brandt Hale, Religion.

Navigating Hot Topics: The Civic Agency Approach to Constructive Engagement and Discussion

Faculty, students and staff are invited to a lively and productive discussion about "Navigating Hot Button Topics" with Harry Boyte and others from the Sabo Center.

Building on conversations initiated by Doug Green, Jacqueline deVries and others at Augsburg, we will hear about people's experiences with controversies in teaching, discuss the current debates about free speech, "coddling," and "safe spaces," and look at what an approach based on civic agency and "free spaces" might contribute. We hope this contributes to a growing public culture of exchange and learning on the campus about these questions, which are central to our education and democratic purposes.

Want to Go to Grad School? You May Need the GRE

The GRE (Graduate Records Exam) is required for many graduate school applications. Augsburg College offers an eight week GRE prep course each summer for students, alumni, and staff at a cost well below those found at private test centers. This course is taught by Augsburg faculty and staff and walks students through each section of the general test. Throughout the course students complete sample test questions and receive in-depth feedback and instruction. The registration fee also includes a six-month subscription to the online GRE study tool, Magoosh.

As a part of making Urness Hall community more beautiful, we are hosting the Urness Art event! On March 30th from 10am - 2pm, come find us posted in the CC, the Quad and the Urn/Mort Lobby and share your artistic abilities in a community mural.

Also during the evening hours from 6-8 pm, we will have another event titled the "Paint the Playlist", with music playing to provide inspiration. The murals will be hung in community spaces across Urness Hall.

STEM Peer Mentorship- Student Coordinator

The STEM Peer Mentorship Program is looking to hire a new Student Coordinator to help support the program alongside Rebekah Dupont the director of STEM Programs. Some of the responsibilities include managing communication between mentors and mentees, meeting with staff and faculty to help plan training sessions, scheduling rooms, and facilitating meetings.

If you are STEM major looking for an opportunity to expand your leadership skills this is a great way to gain experience leading 20-24 individuals. Some previous leadership experience is recommended but not necessary.

If interested in the PAID position and can commit 2-5 hours a week for the entirety of the following academic year, please send an email to stem@augsburg.edu outlining your interest in this position. We will begin to review applications by Friday, April 1. Do not hesitate to reach out to me at safim@augsburg.edu if you have questions about the program.

A talk on the effects of endless war and the fossil fuel economy on climate change, and what we can do about it.

Antonia Juhasz is a leading energy analyst, author and investigative journalist, specializing in oil. Juhasz is the author of three books: Black Tide (2011), The Tyranny of Oil (2008), and The Bush Agenda (2006). Her investigations have taken her a mile below the ocean surface in the Gulf of Mexico to the rainforests of the Ecuadorian Amazon, from the deserts of Afghanistan to the fracking fields of North Dakota, from the Alaskan Arctic to an Houston jail cell, and many more places in between. She holds a Masters Degree in Public Policy from Georgetown University and a Bachelors Degree in Public Policy from Brown University.

Cameron Olson '17 Selected as Rossing Scholar

Please join us in congratulating Cameron Olson '17, who has just been selected as one of three Rossing Physics Scholars in the country. Each year, the ELCA awards a small number of $10,000 scholarships to recognize exemplary students in physics.

Olson, majoring in physics and minoring in computer science and mathematics, chose to attend Augsburg because of its physics department and began conducting research with Dr. Mark Engebretson his freshman year. He continued to build upon his research skills when he joined Augsburg alum, Dr. Brian Anderson, at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab last summer to conduct space physics research. He will return to Johns Hopkins this summer, and plans to apply for a PhD program in quantum physics or plasma physics next year.

A big congratulations to Cameron and the Physics department!
