Students: Apply for 10-Day Fellowship in Israel

The MINNE (Minne means "memory" in Norwegian) Fellows program will select one Augsburg student for a free 10-day fellowship in Israel from May 2-13, 2016. The goal of the program is to foster greater understanding between people and to educate college students about the Holocaust. The Minneapolis Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) will arrange for fellows to tour Israel with Israeli peers. The visit to Israel will include a tour of Yad Vashem, Israel's national Holocaust museum, additional Holocaust educational programming as well as touring the sites of Israel.

The Minneapolis Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) will arrange for fellows to tour Israel with Israeli peers.

-MINNE covers flight and land costs as well as granting students a $50/day per diem provided while the student is in Israel.
-Applicants must be U.S. citizens and registered for full time classes at Augsburg with at least one year left on campus. Students must be sophomores or above with a 3.0+ GPA.

On Tuesday, February 16, the Batalden Seminar in Applied Ethics will affect the daily class schedule.

The revised schedule will be:
1st Period 7:50-9:15 a.m. (instead of 7:50-9:30)
2nd Period 9:25-10:50 a.m. (instead of 9:40-11:20)
Convocation 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
3rd Period 12:10-1:40 p.m.

Free MOOC on Accessibility

Free MOOC on Accessibility: Designing and Teaching Courses for All Learners

The Accessibility at Augsburg Committee invites the Augsburg Community to sign up for this interesting MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) that is open to anyone, anywhere. It begins February 22nd. This MOOC will provide a great review or a great introduction to the Section 508 accessibility standards that apply to higher education. It also provides an opportunity to experience one of the latest trends in higher education – MOOCs!

Accessibility: Designing and Teaching Courses for All Learners is a free 6-week professional development course available that will help you gain a better understanding of accessibility as a civil rights issue and develop the knowledge and skills you need to design learning experiences that promote inclusive learning environments.

During this six-week course, you'll learn how to:

-Recognize and address challenges faced by students with disabilities related to access, success, and completion.
-Articulate faculty and staff roles in reducing barriers for students with disabilities.
-Apply the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in designing accessible learning experiences.
-Analyze the benefits of Backward Design when developing learning experiences.
-Use Section 508 standards and WCAG 2.0 guidelines to create accessible courses.
-Determine which tools and techniques are appropriate based on course content.

You will have the opportunity to earn badges that recognize your mastery of these competencies.

Audience: Anyone may enroll and participate in the MOOC. It has been designed for faculty and staff in higher education at any type or level of institution.

Faculty - Apply for CTL Grants; Due FEB 15

Faculty, apply online now for three grants from the Center for Teaching and Learning.

***All three grants are due NEXT MONDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2016***

The Scholarship Grant supports the scholarly endeavors of full-time faculty. Grants will likely be in the form of two course reassignments, two $4,000 grants, and up to four $2,000 grants.

The Provost's Internationalization Travel Grant awards two travel grants of up to $2,500 to faculty interested in pursuing teaching, research, curriculum development/integration, or other scholarly collaboration with an Augsburg international program or international partner institution.

The Integrated Course Design Grant provides an opportunity for faculty to spend a significant amount of time on course design. The stipend amount is $2,000.

The End is Near - Nominate Now

Nominations for the 2016 Augsburg Outstanding Staff Awards are now being accepted through February 12.

The Outstanding Staff Award is intended to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission statement of the College through their actions. Recipients of this award consistently go above and beyond the call of duty by providing exceptional service to others and/or making innovative and outstanding contributions to enhance the objectives of their department or the Augsburg community. There are six awards given out each year.

All Augsburg faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to nominate staff members. More information about the award and process are online at the nomination form link below.

7th Annual CAO Student Leadership Institute

On behalf of Campus Activities and Orientation (CAO) I would like to publicly thank Keisha Barnard, Hannah Bech, David Erickson, Karina Genis, Duina Hernandez, Maya Horton, Vianney Sanchez, Sienna Schuth, Brad St. Aubin (alumni) and Koal Williams for serving as the facilitators for just under 100 Augsburg student leaders this past Saturday at the 7th Annual CAO Student Leadership Institute. Feedback received from Institute participants thus far indicate extremely high praise for their ability engage meaningful dialogue around the Institute's theme of racial equity. Please congratulate these students on a job well done if you see them around campus!

Minor in Leadership Studies

What can a Minor in Leadership Studies do for your Major?!

Beginning fall 2016, a Minor in Leadership Studies will be available to undergraduate students at Augsburg College! The minor offers an undergraduate education in the study of leadership theory and its practice and is specifically designed for students who have been, and will continue to be, involved in activities both on and off campus.

We have three opportunities for students to learn more about the minor. Leadership Studies faculty and staff will be available at each session to answer questions. A brief presentation will start the meeting followed by Q & A.

These awards recognize student leaders and student organizations for their innovative and outstanding leadership during this academic year. Recipients will be honored at the 17th Annual Augsburg Leadership Awards on Tuesday, April 5 from 5-7 p.m. in Hoversten Chapel.

Silent Action

Do you have any nice items in your home or office that you no longer want or need? The Sisterhood Boutique (run by neighborhood youth) would love those items for their Silent Auction to take place later this month. Perhaps you have jewelry, tools, dish ware, paintings, or other items that could be auctioned?

I am willing to come to your office and pick up items, or they could be dropped off at my office in the Sabo Center in the lower level of Anderson Hall.

Also, the Sisterhood is trying to get 100 scarves for their 2nd anniversary. Do you have any extra scarves of any kind to contribute? They don't have to be new.

My niece, Josie, is selling Girl Scout cookies for the very first time!

If you'd like to purchase cookies, I have an order form down in my office in Memorial 12, in the Social Work Department! Josie will also be on campus tabling in the Christiansen Center from 10 AM - 1PM on Thursday, February 11th! To ensure you get your favorites, I suggest ordering ahead.
