Advice for Today: Find the Writing Lab

It's time! The marvelous writing tutors at the Augsburg Writing Lab are ready to help Augsburg students with any writing task -- papers, reports, applications, personal statements, resumes, etc. The WL is located on the street level of Lindell Library, just left of the circulation desk. No appointments are taken; just come with ideas, drafts (in hard copy), assignments. Last semester, the tutors conducted over 1,000 sessions with Augsburg grad and undergrad students. Here are the hours for spring semester:

Mondays: 11:10-1:40 and 6:30-9:30 PM
Tuesdays: 12:30-3:00; 3:30-6:00; and 7:30-10 PM
Wednesdays: 3:30-6:00 and 6:30-9:00 PM
Thursdays: 12:30-3:00; 3:30-6:00 and 7:30-10:00 PM
Fridays: 4:30-7:00 PM
Sundays: 5:00-8:00 PM

Steen Grant - Request for Proposals

The Steen Committee is happy to announce that the Request for Proposal is now ready for distribution for people interested in applying for a Steen Grant. As you will recall, this grant originated with an endowment left by Professor Paul Steen, former chair and faculty member in the Social Work Department. He specified that the money be used for projects to "reconcile the races". Thus, project applications are welcome to support projects designed to bring people together who differ by race and ethnicity, as well as in other social identities.

Zyzzogeton Research Symposium
Thursday, April 14th
3-5 p.m. @ Hoversten Chapel

Each year, Augsburg College celebrates the creativity and scholarship of undergraduate students with its annual Zyzzogeton Research Symposium. The event falls at the end of each academic year and is a culmination of achievement featuring work across departments. More than 80 students participate each year, showcasing their research. A "zyzzogeton" is a green leaf-hopper as well as the last word in the Webster Collegiate Dictionary, which is a fitting symbol to mark the end of the academic year. The public is welcome, so feel free to invite family, friends, and those from the community to this exciting event!

And there will be crowd favorites nachos and Italian sodas to boot!

Students, Faculty, Staff - Nominate for CTL Awards

The Office of Academic Affairs and the Center for Teaching and Learning invite nominations from all students, faculty, and staff for the 2016 awards for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching and Learning. Augsburg annually recognizes individuals or groups that have made exemplary contributions to creating an engaging academic learning environment through awards for teaching, scholarship, or service.

All full-time faculty or staff who have been employed at the college for at least three years are eligible for the awards. For more information and to submit to online nomination form, go to http://inside.augsburg.edu/ctl/awards.

Nominations will close next Monday, February 22.

Assessment Day: Tuesday, Feb 23, 10:50-12:50pm

Augsburg's annual Assessment Day is next Tuesday, February 23rd.

Assessment Committee will conduct two workshops for faculty in Kennedy 303. From 11 a.m. to noon there will be a presentation and discussion of the data on oral communication and quantitative reasoning. From noon to 12:50 p.m. there will be a discussion of how, why and when to integrate qualitative data into a department assessment plan. Co-curricular Assessment will hold staff workshops next door in Kennedy 305.

Register Now to Present at Zyzzogeton

Zyzzogeton 2016 Registration Deadline is March 10!

Zyzzogeton, Augsburg's annual student research symposium, will be held on Thursday, April 14, from 3-5 p.m. in Hoversten Chapel.

Students who plan to present their research or creative activity at this poster session will need to register and submit an abstract online at www.augsburg.edu/urgo by March 10 (click maroon box on right side of URGO homepage). Please work closely with your research mentors on your poster.

URGO and McNair will be hosting a Research Poster workshop where you can bring your working draft and receive one-on-one feedback and help on Wednesday, March 23, from 4:30-6 p.m. in SVE 204. We will be providing dinner, so please RSVP to urgo@augsburg.edu if you plan to come.

Mentor for Augsburg College Youth Theology Institute (ACYTI)

Current students - Are you interested in growing in your faith, being a role model and positive influence for high school youth, and developing meaningful relationships? If so, then we've got the perfect job for you!

DETAILS…

Augsburg College Youth Theology Institute (ACYTI) is a week-long experience for Senior High students to critically engage in theological inquiry and faith exploration on the campus of the college. Classroom learning, worship opportunities, urban exposure, and community building are all components of the program.

An ACYTI Mentor serves a vital role in the Youth Theology Institute by helping to implement programs and cultivate community as faith leaders working with the Senior High youth participants. A mentor must be able to participate in training beforehand and be available during the full week of ACYTI, be willing to develop healthy relationships with the participants, exhibit leadership skills to faithfully guide participants in learning, worship, and fellowship activities, prepare and lead at least one- 20 minute worship experience and one afternoon or evening activity during ACYTI, enforce rules and boundaries to keep participants safe, and collaborate with other staff and mentors to support other activities throughout the week of ACYTI.

Required Experience:
We are looking for mentors that have leadership experience with children/youth, someone who models a vibrant Christian faith that seeks meaning, trusts God, and serves the neighbor, worship leadership skills and/or musical abilities are desirable, but not required, and a mentor that is comfortable leading and guiding high school students who may only be a few years younger than the mentors.

Attention current sophomores and juniors:

Want to engage in dialogue with people of different faiths and make a difference at Augsburg and in the wider community? Will you be studying on campus all of next year? Consider becoming an Interfaith Scholar.

Interfaith Scholars participate in a yearlong academic seminar (407/408) on interfaith dialogue and action led by Professor Matt Maruggi and Pastor Sonja Hagander, earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion Department, and receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Students from a variety of traditions as well as the non-religious are invited to apply in order to converse respectfully with others about what they believe, why it matters, and how it propels us to service in the world. Scholastic Connections Applications Available

ATTENTION UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF COLOR:
Scholastic Connections is a scholarship and mentorship program for undergraduate students of color at Augsburg College. Students who are successful in their application process and are selected to participate, receive a $5000 scholarship and are paired with a successful alum of color who serves as mentor for the Scholar.

Five "new" Scholars will be selected for the program for 2016-17

Eligibility criteria:
• GPA of 2.5 or higher
• Demonstrated leadership ability or potential
• Demonstrated community involvement (on or off campus)
• Demonstrated financial need


Students who receive full tuition scholarships (Promise, Act 6, President Scholars) are NOT eligible for SC.

Application Process - Applicants must complete the following:
• Scholastic Connections Application (due 3/1)
• One letter of recommendation from someone other than a family member (due 3/1)
• An application interview with Cindy Peterson (completion deadline 3/15) – instructions to follow receipt of application

Christensen Scholars participate in a yearlong academic seminar (REL 405/406) led by Professor Mark Tranvik, earn four upper division semester credits in the Religion Department, and receive a $2,000 scholarship. The 2016-17 seminar will explore great stories of faith. It is designed for those with a lively sense of curiosity and a desire to talk about “big questions” involving God, evil, doubt, salvation, and vocation.

High Tech Israel: The Start Up Nation
