Striving for an Inclusive Faculty - Wed, Feb 10

All faculty and staff are invited to participate in the next "Striving for an Inclusive Faculty" discussion. Next Wednesday's event will explore the aims of education in a democracy, and do so through a democratic discussion structure, the Paideia Seminar.

Internship Opportunity at UIC in China

Augsburg graduates and graduating seniors (May 2016) are invited to apply for a one-academic year Internship at UIC. Applications for the Intern position must be completed and submitted to UIC's International Development Office no later than the 14th of February 2016.

Requirements for the Application include:

1. Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree in any relevant programme.

2. A full transcript of academic work completed with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.

3. Two letters of recommendation from academic staff supporting the application.

4. A full personal resume including an expression of interest in a position in a specific programme which is offered as a major at UIC. The applicant should articulate the skills and experience he/she would bring to this specific area of the UIC academic programme. General Education is also a viable academic area in which to pursue an Intern position. See the following website for more information on the academic curriculum at UIC: http://uic.edu.hk/en/

5. Additional information of activities, working experiences, travel and special strengths including computer/technology skills which are important in assuming the role of an Intern.

6. Agreement to enroll in a specially designed "Chinese Language, Culture, History and Development Programme"(see Compensation for the Intern Position at UIC below for details) offered by the Centre for Chinese Language and Culture (CLC) at UIC during their year of residence at UIC.

7. An interview conducted by the Director of International Education at the home institution in which the applicant is enrolled. It is the applicant's responsibility to schedule this interview with the Director of International Education at his/her home institution.


Compensation for the Intern position at UIC:

1. A monthly housing allowance (RMB1000, for example, for shared apartments at Horizon Cove) will be granted; health insurance; and a round-trip economy air ticket from home country to China of up to RMB11, 000 on a reimbursement basis (the China-home country ticket is given upon successful completion of contract) and ferry or bus fare from airport of arrival to Zhuhai;

2. A monthly stipend of RMB 6000 ($950 US) is paid from assumption of duties in August/September to the end of June. During this period Interns are involved in assigned duties and organizing activities (see requirements and responsibilities of Interns below).

3. A "Chinese Language, Culture, History and Development Programme" consisting of (a) two Chinese language classes of 3 hours weekly in both semesters; (b) lectures/seminars on Chinese culture, history and development at fortnightly intervals, 2 to 3 hours each, 3 to 4 times per semester; and (c) 2-4 visits to historical sites and museums in nearby locations to appreciate the great depth of Chinese history and culture.

Students: Spend 10 Days in Israel

The MINNE (Minne means "memory" in Norwegian) Fellows program will select one Augsburg student for a free 10-day fellowship in Israel from May 2-13, 2016. The goal of the program is to foster greater understanding between people and to educate college students about the Holocaust. The Minneapolis Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) will arrange for fellows to tour Israel with Israeli peers. The visit to Israel will include a tour of Yad Vashem, Israel's national Holocaust museum, additional Holocaust educational programming as well as touring the sites of Israel.

The Minneapolis Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) will arrange for fellows to tour Israel with Israeli peers.

-MINNE covers flight and land costs as well as granting students a $50/day per diem provided while the student is in Israel.
-Applicants must be U.S. citizens and registered for full time classes at Augsburg with at least one year left on campus. Students must be sophomores or above with a 3.0+ GPA.

LAST DAY - Apply for URGO Summer 2016

The 2016 URGO Summer Research information packet and application materials are now available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo)! Students can apply to conduct 100, 200, or 400 hours of paid research over the summer under the mentorship of a faculty member.

Phase 1 of the application will be due February 2. Phase 2, which includes a detailed description of the proposed research, will be due February 23.

Peace Scholar Applications Due Feb. 15

Augsburg sophomores and juniors with a strong interest in peace and justice issues are invited to apply for the 2016-17 Nobel Peace Prize Scholar Program. Two students will be selected to join a group of a dozen students taking courses in Oslo, Norway at the International Summer School and the Nansen Dialogue Center in June & July 2016. Travel and tuition costs are covered by the program. The Peace Scholars also take a leading role in promoting student participation in the Nobel Peace Prize Forum, hosted each year by Augsburg College. Faculty Research Abroad

Augsburg Global Affiliate, IES Abroad, is offering two research associate grants for faculty from its member schools. Research associates will be in residence at any IES Abroad Center for up to one month over a summer or semester program. Associates should be prepared to teach up to two guest lectures in IES Abroad courses, and the associate's research interests should relate to the Center's curriculum. Please note adjunct faculty are not eligible.

TerraCycle

The Environmental Student Leaders Action Network has introduced TerraCycle bins to the Urness bathrooms. The bins will collect personal care products such as: toothpaste, toothbrushes, shower products, deodorant, etc. The floor that collects the most wins a PIZZA PARTY! The competition ends on March 10th! There is another TerraCycle bin for community use in Christensen.

Depression & Anxiety Screening - Walk-In Wednesday

Worried? Stressed? Sad? You are not alone. Get help at the Center for Wellness & Counseling (CWC) Depression and Anxiety Screening Day. Stop by the CWC office on the first floor of the Anderson Residence Hall on Wednesday February 3rd between 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Complete a FREE 10-15 minute screening for depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. No appointments are necessary. Meet face to face with a counselor to discuss the results and receive information and resources on and off campus to help address your concerns. First 15 students to take the screening at the CWC office on Wednesday will receive a gift card for a coffee at Einstein's. Contact the CWC office at 612-330-1707 with any questions. TODAY at 10 a.m.: Author William Kent Krueger Lecture

The Christian faith is rooted in story. The stories of scripture communicate the grace of God en-fleshed in time and place. When shared, this divine plot has the power to pull people into the narrative in transformative ways. This is the confession of the church that is storied by God.

Join the Augsburg College Campus Ministry Office on February 2, 2016, for the first Fosdick Lecture on Preaching with New York Times best-selling author and Minnesota native William Kent Krueger. A renowned story-teller with sixteen novels to his credit – including Ordinary Grace – Kent will speak on the power of story and its "importance to us and its unique ability to move people in mysterious and necessary ways." His lecture will offer helpful and practical insights for his fans as well as people, like preachers, particularly engaged in the story-telling process. All are welcome.

The morning session will continue with a Response then conclude with Daily Chapel Worship at 11:30 am with the Reverend Rachel Wrenn preaching. Rachel is a 2011 graduate from Luther Seminary and recipient of the 2011 A. E. Hanson Prize in Preaching from the seminary. She is actively engaged in small town and rural ministry in Southwest Minnesota and a frequent contributor to the online preaching resource, Working Preacher.

Minor in Leadership Studies

What can a Minor in Leadership Studies do for your Major?!

Beginning fall 2016, a Minor in Leadership Studies will be available to undergraduate students at Augsburg College! The minor offers an undergraduate education in the study of leadership theory and its practice and is specifically designed for students who have been, and will continue to be, involved in activities both on and off campus.

We have three opportunities for students to learn more about the minor. Leadership Studies faculty and staff will be available at each session to answer questions. A brief presentation will start the meeting followed by Q & A.
