Fitness Center Thanksgiving Break Hours
The Haglund and Messerer Fitness Centers, along with the gym and the rest of the Athletic Facilities, will close at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, November 25 and will remain closed until noon on Sunday, November 29 when regular hours resume. All Athletic Facilities will be closed November 26, 27 and 28.

"Hermit Songs" by Samuel Barber
Please celebrate St. Cecilia's Day with us in Chapel on Monday, Nov. 23rd. St. Cecilia is the patron saint of music, and our observance will feature a performance of Samuel Barber's "Hermit Songs," sung by soprano and MacPhail faculty member Mary Laymon, accompanied by pianist/College Organist, Sonja Thompson. This cycle of ten songs for voice and piano are settings of poems, thoughts or observations of ancient Irish monks and scholars from the 8th to 13th centuries. They speak in straightforward, witty, and often surprisingly modern terms of the simple life they led - close to nature, their animals, and to God.

Each summer, universities, national labs, and other research institutions throughout the country offer paid research opportunities for undergraduates. In past years, Augsburg students have been accepted to programs at locations such as Harvard, Johns Hopkins, The University of Minnesota, The University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth, and The Mayo Clinic, among many others.
Check out URGO's website for a list of off-campus research opportunities and then come to the information session December 3rd to hear about the experiences of students who have completed off-campus research & get tips on your own applications!

Summer Research at Mayo in Bioethics - All Majors
OPEN TO ALL MAJORS!
The Mayo Clinic seeks applicants for its 2016 summer undergraduate research program in biomedical ethics. This program is highly competitive and 4-6 students will be selected. Each student will be placed with a faculty mentor for approximately 10 weeks. Students will participate in educational sessions on bioethics research and lunch meetings with faculty.

Self-Observation Technology Now Available
The new Swivl and iPad mini purchased by CTL and the E-Learning Team are now on reserve at the circulation desk. All faculty and staff are welcome to use them for a maximum period of 72 hours.
The Swivl, along with a recording device such as the iPad, can be used for conducting a teaching observation of yourself, recording a course session for a colleague to review at a later time, recording flipped classroom instruction, or for practicing a presentation before a conference.
Not sure how to use these technologies? Step-by-step instructions are included in the Swivl case and posted in the CTL's public ORGS folder.

The Sabo Center and MN Campus Compact Have Moved
This week the staff members of the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship and Minnesota Campus Compact moved to a new co-located office in the lower level of Anderson Hall (where the Physician Assistant Program used to be before moving to Luther Seminary.)
Staff whose offices are now in the Anderson space include: Harry Boyte, Katy Cobb, Dennis Donovan, Elaine Eschenbacher, Allyson Green, Derek Johnson, Sinda Nichols, Beki Parham, Steve Peacock, Julie Plaut, Rachel Svanoe, Mary Laurel True, and Megan Voorhees.
As soon as we're settled we'll invite the Augsburg community to an open house to see our new space.
NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship
Program Associate, STEM Programs, Languages and Cross-cultural Studies
Students can now apply for the 2015-16 NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship Program at Augsburg College. This scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.
This competitive program awards 6 scholarships for spring semester, 2016, in the following areas:
Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Junior). Four scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior). Two scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
Strong candidates for the grant will be students who...
-are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education;
-can demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership within their major area; and
-show an interest in contributing to NASA's mission.
Please note that students from traditionally underrepresented groups in science and mathematics fields are especially encouraged to apply. No applicant shall be denied consideration based on race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex or disability.

STEM Peer Mentoring - Spring 2016
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Mentors (STEMM) is a student-led mentoring program that focuses to provide support to first-year STEM students in navigating their undergraduate careers and preparation for success inside and outside of the classroom.

Wellness Program: Feel Good by Doing Good
Wellness Program: Feel Good by Doing Good
In November Augsburg Total Wellness will be sponsoring a food drive to help fill the shelves of the Augsburg Campus Cupboard. The Augsburg College food shelf, Campus Cupboard, provides free food to students throughout the year. The Campus Cupboard, which opened in February 2013, is the work of partnership between faculty, staff, and students who originally came together as part of the Fighting Poverty at Augsburg special interest group and the Creating an Inclusive Campus conference. The food shelf is supported by Campus Kitchen at Augsburg, A'viands, and the Thrivent Leadership Fellows.
Donations will be accepted in the office of Human Resources November 16th through November 20th.
Needed donations include: canned vegetables, canned fruits, canned meats (fish, chicken, salmon), beans, canned soup (or dry instant soup), peanut butter, jelly, rice, pasta, oatmeal, cereal, granola bars, crackers, nuts, and toiletry items
As an added incentive you may be eligible for a $50 HSA contribution or entry into a prize drawing. To be eligible for incentives you must donate a minimum of 20 items and have not already received $200 in Wellness related HSA contributions.
Get PAID For Your Internship
Wouldn't it be GREAT if you could get paid to do an internship?
You may be able to do just that because of a grant recently awarded to Augsburg College. Augsburg has recently been awarded a Great Lakes Career Ready Grant. The Career Ready Internship grant from Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation provides funds to colleges and universities so that they can partner with businesses and nonprofits to develop new paid internships, and convert existing unpaid internships into paid opportunities. This program serves juniors and seniors who receive financial aid, improving their odds of graduating and preparing them to enter the workforce with real-world experience in their fields of study.
To be eligible:
* Students must be in good academic standing (2.5+ GPA)
* Students must be a college junior or senior (60 credits completed) at the time of the internship
* Students must be eligible for financial aid (work study)
* The internship must be related to your major or career aspirations
* Internships will take place Spring 2016, Summer 2016 or Fall 2016
Act now! Priority consideration is given to students who complete the short Augsburg application, so we recommend you complete it soon.

Model UN Sign Up
Students interested in participating in the Augsburg Model UN program are invited to submit applications to Prof. Underhill by Dec. 1. The program is academically demanding, and open to any students interested in foreign relations and the work of the United Nations. The delegation will travel to New York City from Mar. 19-26, 2016 to represent Yemen at the annual National Model United Nations Conference.
Students accepted into the program must enroll in POL 368, and begin preparation for the conference in December. A program fee applies, but the college subsidizes travel costs for participants. To obtain an application or for more information, please email underhil@augsburg.edu. Faculty and staff are encouraged to invite students with interest in this area to apply.

Campus Engagement and Dialogue in Difficult Times
Dear Augsburg students, faculty, and staff,
I returned last night from visiting our partner university, United International College, in Zhuhai, China. It's always a rewarding experience to witness Augsburg's engagement in the world.
At the same time, it is clear that events in the Middle East, in Europe, in our own city, and on our own campus continue to underscore the sharp reality that there is still a great deal more needed to ensure peace and justice in our society. I commend the members of the Augsburg community who are taking the time and initiative to respond -- to organize the special chapel service to pray for peace, to adopt the Augsburg Day Student Government resolution in support of Black Lives Matter's demands for accountability in the shooting death of Jamar Clark, and to convene conversations led by Augsburg's Students for Racial Justice to call our attention to the need to engage in our classrooms and in our life together on these difficult topics. How fitting it is that our students and campus community commit to leading in these critically important times.
The work is not easy. It requires the ability to listen as well as to speak up on profoundly human and emotional issues. It requires the fortitude to be informed and thoughtful in the face of an increasingly troubled context. It requires being present with each other even -- or maybe especially -- when things are difficult. This was my experience earlier this month when I traveled with the Augsburg River Semester students to Ferguson, Missouri, to the location where Michael Brown died more than a year ago. Standing at that memorial in the middle of the road was a deeply unsettling experience -- there was no way it could or should have been otherwise.
During difficult times, we need people who are able to act with both compassion and strength. We need the informed, thoughtful citizens and leaders that Augsburg is committed to supporting and educating. I am proud to be part of a college that celebrates student engagement, and proud of the efforts of students, faculty, and staff to foster dialogue and seek greater justice in our world.
I am inspired by this community and am looking forward to continued conversation -- the remainder of this semester and into next semester -- in order to develop action plans to address these important topics on our campus.

Augsburg theater alums Quinci Bachman '15, Jorge Rodriguez'15, Stephanie Lein Walseth '00, and Carolyn Pool '91 are involved in this debut production of Full Circle Theater now playing at Dreamland Arts in St. Paul. Full Circle was founded by former theater faculty member Martha Johnson and her husband, Rick Shiomi, former artistic director of Mu Performing Arts. Their production, "Theater: A Sacred Passage", is an original performance piece devised by the five core artists of Full Circle from their personal journeys into theater. The artists/playwrights are Rick Shiomi, Martha Johnson, alum Stephanie Lein Walseth, James Williams, and Lara Trujillo. Their stories embody the challenges and transformational experiences they have had in becoming theater artists and how their lives and work reflect the huge changes in our theater community over the past two decades. The piece incorporates acting, storytelling, choreography and music. Quinci Bachman is production coordinator, stage manager, and sound designer. President Pribbenow will receive the Outstanding Professional Fundraiser of the Year award today from the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) at the 2015 National Philanthropy Day Celebration, held at the InterContinental Saint Paul Riverfront.
Each year the Association of Fundraising Professionals honors individuals and groups who, through their hard work and dedication, have enhanced philanthropy, their communities, and the world.

Public Event: ART in the MN State Capitol Building
Interested in art? State history? Professor Bill Green? All are invited to this public hearing here at Augsburg about the role of art in the MN state capitol building restoration!
The session will provide an overview of existing art, the work of the Capitol Arts Subcommittee (of the State Capitol Preservation Board), and a workshop session framed around a series of questions regarding the treatment of art in the restored Capitol and to develop policies around art going forward.

Job Opportunity For Students
My name is Frankie, and I'm a student at Augsburg. I use a wheelchair and require assistance with daily living tasks. I'm looking to a personal care attendant (PCA). The pay is $12.80 an hour. I use a company called Lifeworks who pays the PCA. There is some paperwork and a background check that they require. Right now I am looking a PCA for this winter.
