Summer Undergraduate Program in Biomedical Ethics

The Mayo Clinic seeks applicants for its 2016 summer undergraduate research program in biomedical ethics. This program is highly competitive and 4-6 students will be selected. Each student will be placed with a faculty mentor for approximately 10 weeks. Students will participate in educational session on bioethics research and lunch meetings with faculty.

Interested applicants should apply to job posting 58853BR: Bioethics Intern on the Mayo Clinic jobs website (http://www.mayoclinic.org/jobs) by January 15, 2016

Candidates must attach the following to the online application:

1. Cover letter describing your careers goals & how bioethics research relates to those goals
2. Resume/CV including your major, relevant coursework, honors, & related experiences
3. 5-10 page writing sample (such as a course paper), preferably on a topic in bioethics
4. Current college transcript
5. Two letters of recommendation from research mentors or professors

Swivl and iPad Now Available at Circ Desk

The new Swivl and iPad mini purchased by CTL and the E-Learning Team are now on reserve at the circulation desk. All faculty and staff are welcome to use them for a maximum period of 72 hours.

The Swivl, along with a recording device such as the iPad, can be used for conducting a teaching observation of yourself, recording a course session for a colleague to review at a later time, recording flipped classroom instruction, or for practicing a presentation before a conference.

If you're not sure how to best utilize these technologies, come to the Swivl Demo TOMORROW! Thursday, November 19th from 2:00-2:30pm in Lindell 202.

Faculty Inclusion Discussion - Monday, Nov. 23

All faculty and staff are invited to next Monday's CTL coffee discussion on building an inclusive faculty. As an institution Augsburg is deeply committed to diversifying its student, faculty, and staff. This great commitment also simultaneously demands that we address issues of inclusiveness from the lens of multiple stakeholders.

This coffee event has been planned with the intent of facilitating a dialogue on campus about creating a diverse and inclusive faculty. We request all faculty, and their allies to kindly attend this event and share their ideas about building a just campus.

Monday, November 23rd at 10:30am in Lindell 301.

Looking For SPA 211 In The Spring?

The Languages and Cross-Cultural Studies Dept. is looking for students interested in taking Spa 211 in the spring semester. Normally this course is only taught in the fall, but with enough student interest, could be offered this coming spring. The class would meet MWF from 1:50-3:00pm.

Wellness Program: Feel Good by Doing Good

In November Augsburg Total Wellness will be sponsoring a food drive to help fill the shelves of the Augsburg Campus Cupboard. The Augsburg College food shelf, Campus Cupboard, provides free food to students throughout the year. The Campus Cupboard, which opened in February 2013, is the work of partnership between faculty, staff, and students who originally came together as part of the Fighting Poverty at Augsburg special interest group and the Creating an Inclusive Campus conference. The food shelf is supported by Campus Kitchen at Augsburg, A'viands, and the Thrivent Leadership Fellows.

Donations will be accepted in the office of Human Resources November 16th through November 20th.

Needed donations include: canned vegetables, canned fruits, canned meats (fish, chicken, salmon), beans, canned soup (or dry instant soup), peanut butter, jelly, rice, pasta, oatmeal, cereal, granola bars, crackers, nuts, and toiletry items

As an added incentive you may be eligible for a $50 HSA contribution or entry into a prize drawing. To be eligible for incentives you must donate a minimum of 20 items and have not already received $200 in Wellness related HSA contributions.

Congrats to Scholarship Winners Going Abroad

Four Auggies have won scholarships from CGEE for their January study abroad programs to Guatemala & Nicaragua! Congratulations to Winta Gebre, Hani Mire, Maly Thao, and LaTiona Washington.

Want more scholarships to go abroad? Apply by November 30 to our summer short term programs in Denmark, Germany, or Mexico to be entered a drawing to win $500 discount!

Staff UC Representative Election Set

Because of the great response to Staff Senate's call for nominations for the position of staff representative to University Council, ACSS has decided to hold a primary election with all 18 qualified candidates. Eligible staff will receive an email with a link to the election ballot. Each of the candidates filled out a short questionnaire and that is available on the election form.

Staff will be asked to select their top 3 choices. The top 3 vote getters will be placed on a final general election ballot. Staff will get one vote for the final election. The goal is to provide staff with a greater opportunity to have their choice influence the final decision.

Primary Election: Wednesday, Nov. 18 to Wednesday, Nov. 25
General Election: Tuesday, Dec. 1 to Friday, Dec. 4

Staff Senate plans to announce their choice for the ACSS selected staff position after the election process.

Practice Spanish With Us

Mesa de Conversación

Join us to practice Spanish in a relaxed and fun setting! Formally the Spanish Conversation Group, Mesa de Conversación will meet on Thursdays from 11:30-1:00 p.m. on the 2nd floor of the Christensen Center. This week we meet in the EAST COMMONS. Our relaxed and friendly gatherings are a place where you can meet new people, practice your Spanish & learn about culture. All levels are welcome! Come for 10 mins. or for the whole session, whatever works for you. Feel free to bring your lunch. Questions? Model UN Sign Up

Students interested in participating in the Augsburg Model UN program are invited to submit applications to Prof. Underhill by Dec. 1. The program is academically demanding, and open to any students interested in foreign relations and the work of the United Nations. The delegation will travel to New York City from March 19-26, 2016 to represent Yemen at the annual National Model United Nations Conference.

Students accepted into the program must enroll in POL 368, and begin preparation for the conference in December. A program fee applies, but the college subsidizes travel costs for participants. To obtain an application or for more information, please emailunderhil@augsburg.edu. Faculty and staff are encouraged to invite students with interest in this area to apply.

CHANCE Meeting - Friday, Nov. 20

Please join us this Friday, November 20th from noon - 1:00 p.m. at The Common Table, 2001 Riverside Ave. (Across 20th from Afro Deli) for the November meeting of Cedar Humphrey Augsburg Neighborhood Community Engagement (CHANCE).

CHANCE is a joint effort between Augsburg and the Humphrey School at the University of Minnesota to provide opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to learn about the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood and to become involved. Carla Neilson, coordinator of the Cedar Riverside Safety Center will be joining us to share her insights and perspectives on safety in the neighborhood. Feel free to bring your lunch and come learn what's going on in our neighborhood.

Plastic Bag Drive

This week, 11/15-11/21, the Department of Residence Life is collaborating with the Environmental Stewardship at Augsburg College in facilitating a plastic bag drive within all residence halls. In each community in each residence hall, there is a competition to collect the most plastic bags, which will then be counted and recycled by the Seward Community Co-Op. There will be prizes for the members of the winning community! Auggies go green!

Turkeypalooza Is (Still) Here

The green bin for Campus Kitchen's annual Turkeypalooza donation drive is still out in Einstein's and just waiting to be filled with sweet potatoes and fresh cranberries! Although the cooking begins tonight, we'll keep checking the donation bin until Friday morning. If it's easier to ban together with officemates and donate cash, we'll accept donations in CB 108 through Thursday. Thanks for helping us bring a traditional Thanksgiving meal to our neighbors!

During the weekend we welcome over 10,000 people to sing, worship, and rejoice at 5 different services. We ask the campus & community to assist at the services as ushers, door managers, will call and more.

Keeping Track of Auggies

Mark Tranvik Presents At Congregations

Dr. Mark Tranvik, Director of the Christensen Center for Vocation (CCV) and a member of the Religion Department, preached at Oak Grove Lutheran in Richfield, MN on Reformation Sunday, October 25. Tranvik also led a forum on Luther's understanding of vocation.

On November 8 and 15, Mark Tranvik led adult forums at Bethel Lutheran in Rochester, MN, on the topic: "Is God Choosy? Another Look at Predestination."

Alyson Astleford Places 3rd At Speech Meet

Congratulations to Alyson Astleford, who won a 3rd place trophy yesterday at a Twin Cities Forensics League tournament hosted by Normandale Community College. Alyson finished 3rd in extemporaneous speaking at the meet, which was attended by 13 schools from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. To win her award, Alyson had to give three separate speeches: an analysis of the Republican Presidential candidates, a discussion of the French response to the recent terrorist incidents in Paris, and an analysis of the civil war in Syria.
