One of the first female singers in Somalia in the 1960's, she was a star in her homeland while in her teens. When the civil war broke out in the 1990's, she fled the country with her children, traveling on foot for seven months to Djibouti. After gaining asylum in Denmark, Mursal recorded and released her debut autobiographical album "The Journey" on Peter Gabriel's Real World Records. Keeping Track of Auggies

Historyapolis wins Public History Prize

Congratulations to Department of History scholar-in-residence Kirsten Delegard as well as recent Augsburg history alumni Kevin Ehrman-Solberg, Heidi Heller, and Anna Romskog for their work with the Historyapolis Project, which has earned the Midwestern History Association's (MHA) inaugural Alice Smith Prize in Public History.

The Historyapolis Project aims to make the city's history accessible and helps catalyze community dialogue around challenging aspects of local history. Augsburg students are deeply involved with the project.

The MHA's Alice Smith Prize is awarded for the best public history project completed in the previous calendar year. This year's prize committee noted that they "found the Historyapolis Project's integration of public history, undergraduate teaching, ability to share authority, effective use of social media and community engagement particularly compelling and acknowledge the vital contribution it makes toward fostering dialogue about the Twin Cities' past, present and future.”

Don't forget to congratulate Christy Mattingly, Bill Wittenbreer, Amy Gort, and Erica Swift, who also provided invaluable support for the Historyapolis Project.
