Faculty Development on YOUR Schedule

Are you facing particular problems in the classroom? Looking for feedback or advice about your teaching? The new CTL Classroom Consultants Program is here for you. All faculty are invited to work with one of seventeen faculty consultants that represent a wide variety of disciplines and pedagogical styles.

The on-call consultants have been trained to offer confidential, non-judgmental assistance through a collaborative process and are available to assist you based on your goals and schedule.

Spa 211 in the Spring

The Languages and Cross-Cultural Studies Dept. is looking for students interested in taking Spa 211 in the spring semester. Normally this course is only taught in the fall, but with enough student interest, could be offered this coming spring. The class would meet MWF from 1:50-3:00pm.

Swivl and iPad Available for Checkout

The new Swivl and iPad mini purchased by CTL and the E-Learning Team are now on reserve at the circulation desk. All faculty and staff are welcome to use them for a maximum period of 72 hours.

The Swivl, along with a recording device such as the iPad, can be used for conducting a teaching observation of yourself, recording a course session for a colleague to review at a later time, recording flipped classroom instruction, or for practicing a presentation before a conference.

If you're not sure how to best utilize these technologies, come to the Swivl Demo on Thursday! November 19th from 2:00-2:30pm in Lindell 202.

YFM205 Interfaith Engagement With Youth

YFM205 Interfaith Engagement With Youth
MWF 9:20 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
Jan. 11 - Feb. 26

This two credit course is a great class for anyone interested in working with youth. It will introduce students to the theories and practices of interfaith work with youth. You will explore your own religious traditions for teachings and practices that encourage interfaith engagement. You will develop the skills necessary for effective youth work and interfaith action. You will gain experience volunteering in an interfaith setting. This class is co-taught by Jeremy Myers of the Religion department and Fardosa Hassan, the Muslim Student Program Associate.

Mindfulness & Mediation Group for Students

Open your mind and manage your stress. A mindfulness and meditation group for students only will be starting on Wednesday 11/18 for four weeks. The group will be held from 10:45-12 noon at the Center for Wellness and Counseling office.

What's Happening in Lindell Library?

As part of the preparation for the Hagfors Center for Science, Business, and Religion, we are constructing mockups of the offices proposed for the new building. With the delivery of the furniture on the 23rd of November, the two basic styles of offices will be ready for staff and faculty to review and comment. These two offices will be located next to the skyway door on the library side. Let us know what you like or dislike as modifications can still be made to the design. Thank you!

Education Faculty Present at National Conference

Education Faculty present at The National Council of Teachers of English Annual Conference Nov. 19-22

Rachel Lloyd will be presenting in two sessions: "Critical Encounters with Non-Fiction: A Literature Lover's Approach" and "Real World Reading: Interrogating Words, Images, & Justice."

Audrey Lensmire will be presenting in two sessions: "Pockets of Hope: Urban and Rural Literacies in Minnesota" and "Pressures and Pleasures: Women Academics Reflect on Choices, Challenges, and Work Life Balance."

Susan O'Connor, Donna Patterson, Peg Finders, and Harry Boyte will be presenting in one session: "Revitalizing the Democratic Purposes of Education: Responsibility, Literacy, and the Potential of Public Achievement."

Wellness Program: Feel Good By Doing Good

In November Augsburg Total Wellness will be sponsoring a food drive to help fill the shelves of the Augsburg Campus Cupboard. The Augsburg College food shelf, Campus Cupboard, provides free food to students throughout the year. The Campus Cupboard, which opened in February 2013, is the work of partnership between faculty, staff, and students who originally came together as part of the Fighting Poverty at Augsburg special interest group and the Creating an Inclusive Campus conference. The food shelf is supported by Campus Kitchen at Augsburg, A'viands, and the Thrivent Leadership Fellows.

Donations will be accepted in the office of Human Resources November 16th through November 20th.

Needed donations include: canned vegetables, canned fruits, canned meats (fish, chicken, salmon), beans, canned soup (or dry instant soup), peanut butter, jelly, rice, pasta, oatmeal, cereal, granola bars, crackers, nuts, and toiletry items

As an added incentive you may be eligible for a $50 HSA contribution or entry into a prize drawing. To be eligible for incentives you must donate a minimum of 20 items and have not already received $200 in Wellness related HSA contributions.

The Commons is open from 11:30am-1:00pm for Brunch and 5pm-7pm for Dinner on Saturday and Sunday.

Ticket Sales Open TODAY: LeVar Burton to Speak at Scholarship Weekend

Actor, director, and educator, LeVar Burton -- star of Reading Rainbow, Roots, and Star Trek, The Next Generation -- will talk about the importance of education, innovation, and creativity at this year's Scholarship Weekend, February 13, 2016.

Burton's talk will be open to the campus community and to the general public. The Auggie presale for tickets to this unique presentation began this morning and will run through November 30. Join the International Student Organization a we celebrate international students and their cultures here on campus.

Monday 16th: International Cultures showcasing in Christensen Center 10 am-2pm Stop by for a great time and international candy

Wednesday 18th: International Game Night in the New Student Lounge 6-7:30pm

Friday 20th: International Dance Night; hosted by ISO and ALAS in the East Commons 8pm

ISO and A'viands will also be working together to provide a meal from a different part of the world each day of the week.

Accessibility at Augsburg Campus Forum Nov. 17

The forum on Accessibility at Augsburg is Tues., Nov. 17, 12-1:15, Lindell 301, is an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to learn about and discuss current efforts to make Augsburg accessible for all students, staff, faculty, and guests.

After a brief presentation on the 2015-16 Action Plan, participants will discuss what, from their perspective is going well, what could strengthened, and ideas to improve accessibility. Members of the Accessibility at Augsburg Committee will help answer questions and to record suggestions and concerns for future committee work.

Walt Disney's Chimpanzee Sponsored by Tri Beta

Greetings to all Auggies,
We at Tri Beta (the Biological Honor Society) would like to extend an invitation to a rather unique event. One of our Biology Department Faculty continues to pursue research with some of our closest biological relatives, primates, which starred in the Walt Disney movie, Chimpanzee. To promote the value in his research, Dr. Kevin Potts will give a small introduction to the viewing of Chimpanzee on November 21st at 7:00 in science 123. Everyone is welcome including family and friends to this show. Snacks provided and entry is free, so we would like to share in this fun event.

Keeping Track of Auggies

NCS/MAA Team Contest with Record Participation

A record number of math majors, math minors, and math enthusiasts participated in the 19th annual North Central Section of the Mathematical Association of America Team Competition this past weekend. Fourteen students formed five teams and worked collaboratively on trying to solve ten mathematical problems in three hours. The results were sent to the contest coordinator for grading and will be available in a few of weeks. Kudos to all the students, listed below alphabetically:
