How can we motivate students so they persist? This faculty workshop "Interactional Teaching: Creating a Culture of Shared Responsibility in the Classroom" will provide you with some practical and easy to implement techniques that promote motivation. We will discuss and practice using social interaction and formative assessment techniques designed to provide feedback and motivate your students (and maybe even motivate you too). From giving students choices to using Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATS), you are sure to find a little something you can even apply this semester!
Thursday, Nov. 12th, 11:30am12:30pm in the Marshall Room, Christensen Center.
Sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning.
Academic Year Research Grants Available
URGO Academic Year Research Grants are now available for undergraduate students who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. This is a great way to ease into research if you have never done it before, or to continue work on an existing project. Students from all disciplines are invited to apply, and past projects have ranged from biology lab work to theater performance. Contact a faculty member within your major to discover research in progress that you may be able to join. Alternatively, you can work collaboratively with a faculty member to develop a new project. Once you have a project in mind, work with your mentor to fill out the application found on our website: http://www.augsburg.edu/urgo/ under "applications."
Grant winners may receive up to $1,200 for research supplies and/or a student stipend. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so do not hesitate to talk with a faculty member and get the ball rolling!

One of the first female singers in Somalia in the 1960's, she was a star in her homeland while in her teens. Absorbing every influence she could find, she blended Western African sound to pioneer the popular qaraami style, now known as "Somali jazz". When the civil war broke out in the 1990's, she fled the country with her children, traveling on foot for seven months to Djibouti. After gaining asylum in Denmark, Mursal recorded and released her debut autobiographical album "The Journey" on Peter Gabriel's Real World Records. She will perform with a live band including Augsburg alums and artists from around the world.

Michael Lansing Book Reading, Nov 12
Please come to hear Professor Michael Lansing read from his new book: Insurgent Democracy.
November 12, 2015, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
Magers & Quinn Booksellers, 3038 Hennepin Avenue, Minneapolis.
Co-Sponsored by the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship
Insurgent Democracy offers a new look at the Nonpartisan League and a new way to understand its rise and fall in the United States and Canada. Lansing argues that, rather than a spasm of populist rage that inevitably burned itself out, the story of the League is in fact an instructive example of how popular movements can create lasting change. Depicting the League as a transnational response to economic inequity, Lansing not only resurrects its story of citizen activism, but also allows us to see its potential to inform contemporary movements.
