Dr. Keith Gilsdorf, Interim Dean of Prof. Studies

Dear faculty and staff colleagues:

It is with great pleasure that I write to announce that Dr. Keith Gilsdorf, Professor of Economics, has agreed to serve as interim dean of professional studies for the 2015-16 academic year. During the term of his appointment as dean, which will begin August 17, Keith will continue to serve as chair of the Department of Economics.

Keith came to Augsburg in the Fall of 2001 with a PhD in Economics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and twelve years' combined experience as a faculty member at Morningside College (where he also served as department chair) and Macalester College. He has also worked for the federal government in the Department of Energy and for the State of Minnesota in the Department of Public Service. At Augsburg, he was promoted to associate professor in 2005 and tenured in 2007. In 2014, he was promoted to full professor, the highest academic rank, on the strength of his accomplishments as a teacher and a scholar, as well as his service to the College. Since the Fall of 2012, he has served as chair of the Economics Department, following a one-year appointment as co-chair in 2011-12.

Keith's teaching interests focus on helping students learn how empirical economic analyses of social issues and problems can contribute to improved societal conditions. In addition to teaching micro- and macroeconomics, he regularly teaches courses in "Money and Banking," "Environmental Economics," and "Labor Economics." His research interests focus on compensation systems, sports economics, determinants of market structure, regulatory policy, and the economics of organizations. An active member of the Augsburg community, Keith has advised numerous URGO students and served on many summa honors exam committees. In addition, among other responsibilities, he has served on the compensation committee, the Faculty Senate, and the CSBR Program Validation Task Force.

As interim dean of professional studies, Keith's responsibilities will focus on the departments of Business Administration; Education; Health, Physical Education and Exercise Science; Nursing; Physician Assistant Studies, and Social Work. He will collaborate closely with the new associate provost to ensure strong professional studies programs in Rochester, the director of our Adult Undergraduate program to ensure strong professional studies programs in AU, and the graduate program directors in professional studies fields.

In the past, the professional studies dean has had primary responsibility for Rochester, the Adult Undergraduate program, and graduate programs. More recently, each dean has assumed primary administrative responsibility for all academic programs--traditional Day, Adult Undergraduate, and Graduate--that align with his or her divisional area. Our new associate provost will have primary administrative responsibility for Augsburg in Rochester, but the appropriate disciplinary dean and department chair will have primary academic oversight of the faculty and the academic program. For this year, at least, I will work directly with the Graduate Program Council to strengthen governance of our graduate programs as a whole.

This fall, a search committee will be appointed, and we will conduct a national search for a new dean.

MFA Summer Residency - Readings and Screenings

The MFA in Creative Writing 2015 Summer Residency will be held Thursday, July 23 through Sunday, August 2. Please join us in welcoming our group of very talented students and acclaimed writers to campus for this festival of craft talks, workshops, evening readings and more. This summer's visiting writers include memoirist Sue William Silverman; poet Marci Vogel, winner of the first Howling Bird Press book award; novelist Helene Wecker; playwright Carson Kreitzer; and Ken Rance, screenwriter of the film NEW IN TOWN. They will be joining our own MFA mentors, Nicole Brending, Stephan Eirik Clark, Cass Dalglish, Jack El-Hai, Heid Erdrich, Sarah Myers and Cary Waterman. In addition, eleven of our graduating MFA students will be giving public readings of their works - Trena Bolden-Fields, Ashley Cardona, Jayne Carlson, John Garland, Dominique Haikel, Jay Moad, Cindy Morgan, Roseroberta 'Bobbi' Pauling, Jen Shutt, KatieJo Sonneman and Amanda Symes.

We invite you to join us for the evening readings/screenings and receptions, at which featured writers will be available to sign their works. All events are free and the public is invited.

Kruzel Presents at AHEAD Conference

Rachel Kruzel, CLASS Accommodations Specialist, made two presentations at the recent national conference of the Association on Higher Education and Disability. The first was titled "Campus-Wide Universal Design Software Implementation" and the second was titled "Small School, Big Changes: Growing Your Higher Ed Assistive Technology Program."
