Personal Document Destruction Event this Thursday

Faculty, staff and students are welcome to bring their personal confidential documents to a FREE Shred Event sponsored by Augsburg Facilities Management. Bring your material (two boxes or bags maximum, please) to the Shred Right truck parked between Sverdrup and Lindell Library on Thursday, May 14, between 8-9 a.m. You must present your documents at this time; I am sorry we cannot offer early pick-up and storage of your personal documents. If you are not available at this time, it is your choice if you wish to entrust one of your coworkers to bring the documents to the truck for you. An Augsburg ID is required, as we unfortunately cannot make this a community event.

Another tax filing season has passed, maybe that is an opportunity to purge older records? We can't give advice about what records you can destroy, but do your own research to figure out what you can get rid of from your home desk or file cabinet!

Symposium: The Doctrine of Christian Discovery and Boarding School Trauma

"The Doctrine of Christian Discovery and Boarding School Trauma: Toward Reconciliation and Healing"

The Episcopal Church in Minnesota, together with Erma Vizenor, Chairwoman of the White Earth Nation, are cosponsoring a symposium to bring attention to and promote reconciliation and healing from the traumatic legacies of the legal Doctrine of Christian Discovery and Boarding School Policy. The event is free and open to the public. All are welcome.

Saturday, May 30, 2015
1-5 p.m.
St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral Church, 519 Oak Grove Street, Minneapolis. It will include a short video and breakout sessions.

The Doctrine of Christian Discovery refers to 15th and 16th century church pronouncements that gave absolute legal title to European monarchs, as they hired explorers to "discover" lands in the Americas. The theological pretense of Christian superiority also underwrote U.S. policies designed to eradicate indigenous cultures, languages, traditions, and to jointly civilize/Christianize indigenous people, especially in forced Boarding School education organized under the slogan "kill the Indian in order to save the man." Native American families and communities continue to struggle with historical trauma associated with the boarding schools and the widespread methods of physical, emotional, and psychological abuse.

The 2009 General Convention of the Episcopal Church formally repudiated the Doctrine of Discovery, as did the Episcopal Church in Minnesota Convention in 2012. Presiding Bishop Kathryn Jefferts Schori noted how European Americans continue to benefit from the Doctrine of Discovery and linked the Doctrine to subsequent policies of Christianization and Civilization. She called Episcopalians to go beyond repudiation and seek reconciliation and healing. Attempting to remake the land and peoples they found "in their own image" was a profound act of idolatry, she wrote. Repentance and amendment of life are the answer, and God asks us all – this Church, our partners and neighbors, and the nations, which were founded under the Doctrine of Discovery – to the challenging work of reconciliation.
