Creating an Inclusive Campus Workshop May 7

Augsburg faculty, staff, and students are invited to take part in the annual Creating an Inclusive Campus workshop on Thursday, May 7. The event, which continues the College's commitment to intentional diversity, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and explore how students are prepared for a life of collaboration in a diverse, global environment, and how the College can live out its mission.

We will hear from sociologist Buffy Smith about helping students navigate the hidden curriculum and will have separate break out session for faculty and staff.

Summer Hours in the Writing Lab

Yes, students write papers in the summer, too, and tutors in the WL can help! Summer hours start next Monday, May 11 and run through August 21 (break week is June 29 - July 6). The lab is located on the street level of Lindell Library and is just left of the circulation desk. This service is free and available to all Augsburg students; no appointments are taken. Just show up with your ideas and your work-in-progress (hard copy). Here are the summer hours:

Monday and Thursdays - 4:30 - 7 PM.

Gender & Sexuality Inclusiveness Faculty Workshop

Faculty: join Adriane Brown, Mike Grewe, and CTL for an opportunity to hone your classroom inclusiveness practices.

Monday, May 11, 1-3 p.m.
Marshall Room

This interactive workshop will provide faculty with tools to promote gender and sexuality inclusiveness in the classroom. Facilitators will share results from the recent campus diversity and inclusiveness survey, discuss terminology, offer specific examples of classroom inclusion practices, work through common classroom scenarios, and provide information about gender and sexuality resources at Augsburg.

All Augsburg faculty from across the college are welcome to attend, regardless of whether or not they have completed Ally Training.

A Big Thank You

I am extremely happy to announce that just over 80 staff members completed their Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) Group Profile Sessions last week and will continue with their Individual Profile Sessions this week and next. This level of commitment to further developing personal intercultural competency will help Augsburg College as a whole continue to move towards the fully inclusive and affirming campus for which we all strive.

An additional thank you to Jim Trelstad-Porter, David Hamilton, and Leah Spinosa de Vega for joining me as facilitators for these sessions.

Fall Major/Career Exploration Weeks coming in Fall

Get involved! New pilot program coming for Fall 2015: Fall Major/Career Exploration Weeks

To better support students in exploring options for majors and careers, Career & Internship Services is partnering with URGO to plan a new five-week program series for fall 2015 - and we hope you will be involved! (Details: http://www.augsburg.edu/strommen/calendar/fall-majorcareer-exploration-series/)

The program is designed to help students explore majors and careers by disciplines in alignment with our academic divisions, plus a week focused on pre-health and one designed to meet the needs of undecided students or those still exploring majors or careers.

During each of the five weeks Career & Internship Services and/or URGO will host a panel discussion featuring a mix of alumni, employers, faculty, and other experts linked to the majors and disciplines featured that week.

In addition, faculty, staff and students are invited to plan additional offerings during the weeks that most closely align to their major, department, or organization mission/focus (see list of dates below and online). Career & Internship Services will promote the full slate of offerings to students, provided information is received by our deadline.

The Fall 2015 weeks are scheduled as follows:

Week of Sept. 21: Professional Studies
Week of Sept. 28: Fine Arts & Humanities
Week of Oct. 5: Natural & Social Sciences
Week of Oct. 12: Pre-Health Week
Week of Oct. 19: Undecided/Exploratory Student Week

Feed My Starving Children Team Members Wanted!

Auggies in Service to our Community,

The Augsburg Total Wellness program is calling for volunteers to join our team to pack meals for the Feed My Starving Children organization. This is a great opportunity to use your community service time to serve our global community. Together we can make a difference.

Join the Augsburg team on May 26 from 9:30 - 11:30 AM at the Coon Rapids Feed My Starving Children packing location.
