General Announcements

2015 Commencement Keynote Speaker and Honorary Degree Recipients

Dear Augsburg Community,

I am pleased to announce the keynote speaker and honorary degree recipients for Augsburg's 2015 commencement ceremonies. The commencement theme this year, "Critical Thinkers," once again ties this celebration of student success to our mission as a college.

Nominated by the Augsburg faculty and affirmed by our Board of Regents, the selected 2015 commencement keynote speaker, Winona LaDuke, will deliver the keynote address at both the Saturday and Sunday ceremonies.

A member of the Anishinaabe from White Earth, LaDuke founded the White Earth Land Recovery Project in 1989 to reclaim lands for the tribe and to support enterprises that create employment. She also established and is the executive director of Honor the Earth, a Native-led organization to "break the geographic and political isolation of Native Communities and ... to increase financial resources for organizing and change" by supporting grassroots Native environmental groups. LaDuke has a degree in rural economic development from Harvard University and a master's in community economic development from Antioch University. LaDuke was the Green Party candidate for vice president of the United States in 1996 and 2000.

During the Saturday commencement ceremony for students graduating from the day undergraduate program, Augsburg will award LaDuke an honorary doctorate degree. During the Sunday commencement ceremony for students graduating from our adult undergraduate and graduate programs, the College will award an honorary doctorate to Peter Bell, who also was nominated by the Augsburg faculty and affirmed by the College's Board of Regents.

Bell is former chair of the Metropolitan Council, which oversees the regional transit system, regional wastewater treatment, regional parks, and funding for affordable housing opportunities. During Bell's tenure at the Metropolitan Council, the Hiawatha and Northstar rail lines opened, planning and construction began for the Central and Southwest Corridor light rail lines, and overall public transit ridership in the Twin Cities rose substantially. Prior to serving with the Metropolitan Council, Bell served as executive vice president for publishing and educational services at Hazelden in Center City, Minnesota, and as executive vice president for corporate community relations for TCF Bank, Minneapolis. Bell was a member of the University of Minnesota Board of Regents and has served on the board of directors for many local and national social and civic organizations. They include the Citizens League, Center of the American Experiment, Greater Twin Cities United Way, the Center for New Black Leadership, the Greater Minnesota Housing Fund and the Family Housing Fund.

For more detailed information about the May 2 and May 3 commencement schedule, see www.augsburg.edu/commencement/details. I look forward to welcoming these distinguished leaders and critical thinkers to Augsburg as we celebrate the success of our 2015 graduates and embrace our calling as a college to serve our neighbor by being small to our students and big for the world.

Sincerely,

Paul C. Pribbenow
President

Thanks for a Great Philanthropy Week

Last week's Philanthropy Week was a success as Augsburg faculty, staff and students stopped by the table in Christensen or the Philanthropy Week lunch to send a thank you note to the many alumni, parents and friends of the College who give generously each year.

Many students took time out of their busy days to write thank you notes to the donors who fund their scholarships—80 thank you notes were written to scholarship donors and their families. One student even wrote her thank you note and sent it from Greece, where she is studying abroad!

52 scholarship profiles were completed by students who receive a named scholarship and 34 students signed up for the April 12 scholarship brunch.

At last Thursday's lunch, more than 50 faculty, staff and students wrote more than 360 thank you notes to Augsburg donors.

These thank you notes from students, faculty and staff mean a great deal to the 3,000 donors who give to Augsburg each year. Thanks to everyone who participated in Philanthropy Week!

Keeping Track of Auggies

Mary Cornelius's Publication

Congratulations to Mary Cornelius, whose creative essay "Peak Busters" is featured in the online literary magazine The Riveter, which "celebrates narratives and longform journalism by women." Mary's essay is about the three generations of women runners in her family and their participation in the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon. The essay, which Mary initiated in a class on Creative Nonfiction, combines memoir, family history, and women's history.

Everlast Punching Bag $80

I have my Everlast punching bag for sale. This is a two sided equipment to hang a heavy bag and have the speed bag on the other side.

Is in perfect conditions will all parts and bags. Speed bags need to be pumped up but all is in working condition. I currently have the speed bag portion detached from the heavy bag so you could leave whatever side you wish on.

If you are interested in pictures, please email me at mccune@augsburg.edu

I am looking for $80 for the set. This price includes, Everlast punching stand with attachments for heavy and speed bag sides, 2 speed bags, heavy bag and chain (believe 70lbs), gloves (these are well used I recommend getting new ones eventually). It would be wise to invest in weights to hold down the stand as well.
