Donor of the Day: Tony Bibus III
Philanthropy Week's Donor of the Day is Tony Bibus, Professor Emeritus in Social Work
Tony Bibus III, PhD, LISW began teaching in the social work department in 1992. As a faculty emeritus, he makes regular gifts to an endowed scholarship that supports students in social work as well as to The Augsburg Fund, which supports every student every day. "It's important to maintain a select number of departmental scholarships as a way to pay special attention to majors and graduate students," Bibus says. "The Augsburg Fund is the best way for donors to support all students at Augsburg and the ongoing mission of the College in education for service."
Being the parent of an alumnus has allowed Bibus to develop another level of awareness for the transformative education that Augsburg provides. His son graduated in 2002 and majored in English. "It is truly a college where one can cultivate the caring part of yourself and is one of the kindest places I have ever had the pleasure to work in," Bibus says. "My son would have graduated from college with substantial debt were it not for the generous tuition discount available to dependents of faculty and staff at Augsburg College."
Philanthropic and other support for scholarly activities helped Tony afford his graduate studies. At the University of Virginia, where Tony studied for his masters in English, he received a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, which paid for all his tuition, room and board. His doctoral program was funded almost entirely by research and teaching assistantships. Not only that, but a federal grant funded his salary as a research project director for two years at the University of Minnesota School of Social Work.
Thank you, Tony, for paying it forward and for supporting all students with your gifts!
Interested in giving to an existing scholarship or making a gift to The Augsburg Fund? Stop by our Philanthropy Week lunch in East Commons today from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. or email giving@augsburg.edu.

This event will bring roughly 100+ admitted students and their families to Augsburg to show them what it's like to be an Auggie! We'd love to have your organization and/or department present! The event is on Friday, April 10th and the fair will be from 11am-12pm in the Quad (location may change due to weather). Augsburg College celebrates the creativity and scholarship of undergraduate students with its annual Zyzzogeton festival. The festival falls at the end of each academic year and is a culmination of achievement featuring work across departments. A "zyzzogeton" is a green leaf-hopper as well as the last word in the Webster Collegiate Dictionary, which is a fitting symbol to mark the end of the academic year. The public is welcome, so please come join us for this exciting event!
