Backwards Course Design - All the Kids Are Doing It

Individual faculty and departmental groups are invited to submit applications for Integrated Course Design Grants. Applications and the Call for Proposals can be found at http://inside.augsburg.edu/ctl/grant-applications/. The program supports both design-based critique and revision of existing courses or programs and design-based creation of new courses or programs.

The 2015 ICD group will meet regularly over the course of two weeks in May. The goal of the new ICD program design is to provide participants the tools they need to complete their projects in an efficient and supportive manner. If you have any questions about the ICD Grants, please contact Tim Pippert or John Schmit.

Senior Auggie Volunteers Needed on Assessment Day

For the past several years, Augsburg College has used an online test called the Collegiate Learning Assessment (or CLA) to gather information about how our students grow in their writing, critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and quantitative reasoning over their years in college. To gather that information we ask 100 seniors to complete the CLA each spring. The online test takes 90-120 minutes to complete and engages students in a "real world" task. Student receive copies of their own scores.

On February 24 we are using the Assessment Day convocation time (between 10:50 a.m. and 12:50 p.m.) to administer the CLA to seniors. We need your help to achieve our goal of 100 seniors. Students who volunteer to complete the assessment on Assessment Day will get a free lunch and be entered into a drawing for free graduation robes.

Please note that some departments have planned specific Assessment Day activities for their majors. If you have been asked by your major faculty to participate in some activity, please do not volunteer.

Please contact Amy Gort (gort@augsburg.edu) if you are able to volunteer.

FAFSA Deadline May 1st

It's that time again! The FAFSA application for the 2015-2016 year is now available for students returning to Augsburg for the 2015-2016 academic year. The FAFSA is the application required to determine your eligibility for access to financial aid during your time at Augsburg, and must be renewed every year.

May 1st is the deadline to apply for financial aid at Augsburg. All Day College students must submit their application by this date or risk losing some of the aid that may be available to you.

Don't forget to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool when completing your FAFSA this year. This function pre-populates your tax information into the application, which reduces your chances of being selected for verification later on. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool is available for use on the FAFSA 2-3 weeks after electronically filing your taxes, and 6-8 weeks after filing paper taxes.

Questions? Stop by the Enrollment Center and speak with any of our Student Financial Services Counselors or call us at 612-330-1046.

Time to take it to the Tommies! The Auggies and Tommies faculty/staff will be back at it for the 6th Annual Auggies vs. Tommies Fitness Challenge. To date WE are 3-2 in these challenges.
Before you ask, YES we are returning to our old tried and true method of reporting points . . . to me!
Read below for details.

What: 8 weeks of friendly and healthy competition
Who: Any faculty and staff (full-time, part-time, adjunct)
When: Starting February 18 - April 15
Where: Anywhere you want to work out as long as it is at least for 30 minutes (doesn't need to be all at once).
How:
30 minutes of activity = 1 point
60 minutes of activity = 2 points
14 points is the maximum points/week. Each week the winner will be announced based on the average for the team. The goal is to win the most weeks during this 8 week challenge.
· Fac/staff with an Augsburg HSA, who report their points on time every week will receive a $50 contribution to their HSA.
· Fac/staff without an HSA, who report their points on time every week will be entered in a drawing for various prizes.

Rules of the Competition:
1) Sign up by sending enke@augsburg.edu an email that you are interested in participating.
2) Keep track of the number of points earned each week (14 is the maximum/week).
3) A week starts on Wednesday and ends on Tuesday at midnight.
4) If you miss reporting your total by Wednesday @ 2:00 p.m., your points will not count for that particular week. You can participate the following week but you will not be allowed to use any points from the previous week.
5) This is a fun competition between Augsburg and St. Thomas but the MAIN goal is to get folks motivated to add some (or perhaps more) physical activity into their weekly routine.
6) Every week we will announce the school winner.
7) Folks can join in at any time in the program and their points start at that particular time.
8) Reporting points is EASY - I will send a reminder email on Tues. and Wed. of each week.

Feedback Session: Boyte Speech on Student Success

Please join the Sabo Center on Tuesday, March 3, 3:30-4:30 in the Marshall Room for a listening and feedback session with Harry Boyte, Senior Scholar of the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship. Later in March Harry will be delivering the concluding address to the Gates Foundation SXSW EDU 2015 conference, "Getting to Graduation: Re-designing Higher Ed for Student Success" in Austin, Texas.

This feedback session will feature a draft of Boyte's speech, which draws on Augsburg experiences and innovations, as well as the civic agency/public work/democratic society framework reflected in the new book collection he edited, Democracy's Education: Public Work, Citizenship, and the Future of Colleges and Universities (Vanderbilt University Press). This talk is an important opportunity to showcase some of the work of Augsburg and our colleagues in "educating for democracy" throughout higher education, and is open to anyone who would like to attend.

Feel free to forward this invitation to others who might be interested.

Join International #PeaceItForward Campaign

Join the #PeaceItForward campaign to tell the world how you make a difference to build peace and to become part of an international video that will be used to raise awareness and grow involvement in peacemaking.

To become part of the campaign, simply stop by Oren Gateway Center from 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 24, to have your photo taken.

Be ready to answer the question of how you build peace and how you make a difference. Maybe you serve meals to the hungry, mentor children or serve on a nonprofit community board. Perhaps you work as part of a restorative justice program, are in a Rotary group that conducts projects across the globe, or help out an elderly neighbor. Peace building takes on many forms, small and large, and we want to capture what you do that makes a difference in your community, your state, our world.

A photographer will take a professional-quality, digital photo and a photo with your cell phone that you can post to social media. The photos will be used as part of a video that will be shown to an international audience at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum being held in Minneapolis from March 6-8. It's your chance to tell the world why peace matters.

The photo shoot is open to the public, so be sure to invite your friends! More at http://www.augsburg.edu/news/2015/02/17/peaceitforward/
