Academic Year Research Grants Available

Each fall URGO offers $1,000 research grants for students who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project. These grants go quickly, so apply SOON!

Applications for Academic-Year Research Grants are accepted on a rolling basis. To apply, complete the electronic application at http://www.augsburg.edu/urgo/research/on-campus-research/. Mentor approval for projects is shown by emailing the application and report form to urgo@augsburg.edu.

Kemper Scholarship for First Year Students

We need your experience with first year students to identify candidates for the Kemper Scholarship Program. This prestigious opportunity provides up to $10,000 financial aid per year and 2 paid summer internships following sophomore and junior years. Please nominate first year students with whom you have worked this fall. These are students who have demonstrated leadership, solid academic commitment and interest in linking liberal education and professional work. Nominees will receive a letter indicating they have been nominated and encouraging them to apply for this competitive process.

Further information sessions for candidates will be held in early December. The initial request for nominations deadline is Monday November 24th to Diane Pikepike@augsburg.edu. A NAFSA ACADEMIC PROGRAMS FACULTY CONVERSATION

How are colleges and universities re-imagining undergraduate curricula and majors to help students thrive in a globally interconnected world? Many institutions include as part of their mission statements promises to prepare all of their graduates for active, successful engagement in the global community. Such promises are often more easily made than kept.

Experts will share their own experiences of redesigning general education programs that incorporate global learning. Participants will then join the conversation to discuss:

+tools that faculty, including part-time faculty, can use to infuse courses with global learning;
+assessment of student learning initiatives that provide meaningful information on global learning outcomes;
+local experiential learning models that help students address global issues in their community.

Faculty Conversations are designed for faculty members, academic leaders, researchers, and international educators interested in student learning outcomes and the educational experiences—curricular and co-curricular—created to help students gain and practice global knowledge, skills, and perspectives.

Take advantage of this special and stimulating conversation that taps into NAFSA's growing community of practice focused on global learning.

Augsburg Students Win at ACTC Film Festival

The 4th Annual ACTC Student Film Festival was exciting. The St. Anthony Main Theater was sold out with friends, family, students, and faculty from all five ACTC campuses: Augsburg, Hamline, Macalester, St. Kate's, and St. Thomas. The juried event announced four awards. Of those four two were won by Augsburg Film majors. Rebecca Schroeder's "We Are The Art" won Best Music Video. Thomas VandanDolder's "Oblivious" won Best Experimental/Narrative. The reception and ceremony was held at Vic's. Everyone had a great time. Congratulations Rebecca and Thomas!

Fight Hunger, Celebrate Thanksgiving - Donate

The smell of turkey and pumpkin is growing stronger by the day, and the Campus Kitchen needs your help to spread this Thanksgiving goodness during Turkey Palooza this week! In joining with our peer institutions for this annual event, Augsburg students are preparing a special Thanksgiving-themed meal for seniors at Ebenezer Tower and re-stocking the shelves at the Campus Cupboard student food pantry in the Foss Center.

You can support these efforts by donating the following items by THIS THURSDAY (11/20):

For Ebenezer:
-Corn (canned)
-Maple syrup
-Pumpkin (canned or fresh pie pumpkins)
-Bread (for stuffing)
-Stock (vegetable, chicken, or turkey)
-Sweet potatoes (preferably fresh, not canned)
-Onions

For Campus Cupboard:
-Healthy one-serving meals (e.g., soup)
-Dried or canned fruit and vegetables
-Canned meat (e.g., tuna)
-Rice, pasta, grains
-Cereal
-Peanut butter and jam
-Granola or breakfast bars

-Personal items (toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.)

Tuesday 11/18/14
Nabo is open from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.. The Special of the Day is Sloppy Joes.

Einstein's is open from 7:30 a.m.-9 p.m., with the late night menu starting at 7 p.m.

The Commons is open from 7:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Market Place is serving Grilled Garlic Pork Loin, Grilled Zucchini, Parislised Potatoes, and Asparagus. Vege is serving Seasoned Yellow Squash, Snap Peas with Mushrooms, Couscous with Dates & Pistachios, and Cottage Fries.

On Wednesday November 26th The Commons, Einstein's, and Nabo will be closing at 1:30 p.m. Einstein's and Nabo will be closed from November 27th through November 30th. The Commons will be closed November 27th through November 29th and will reopen for Dinner at 5 p.m. on November 30th.

On December 12th from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Christensen Center Lobby there will be a meeting with the food service director and a dietician visit.

2015 Annual Benefit Enrollment

The annual benefit enrollment period will be from November 10-21. Open Enrollment Information Sessions will be in the Marshall Room of Christensen Center.

Information sessions are:
November 18 at 2:45 p.m.
November 21 at 12 p.m.

Representatives from HealthPartners, OptumHealth and Hays will be at the information sessions to answer any questions you might have about our plan offerings for 2015. Please plan to attend to learn what you need to do to enroll and/or make changes to your current benefit elections. We look forward to seeing you there.

Enrollment must be completed online. Once you have successfully completed your benefit enrollment for your health, dental, HSA and FSA elections a confirmation notice will be sent to your Augsburg email address. To make changes or enroll in Supplemental Life and AD&D insurance coverages you must complete the SunLife application for supplemental coverages and submit to the office of Human Resources no later than 4 p.m., November 21.

Due to a slight plan design change your 2014 plan elections will not carry over into 2015. If enrollment is not completed by the deadline, your plan coverage will end on December 31, 2014.

Thanksgiving Timesheet Changes

All student workers, staff employees and supervisors:

With Thanksgiving week being a payroll week, we will be adjusting the cutoffs for timesheet approvals for the week of November 24th . All students and staff must submit their timesheets for approval by 12:00 p.m. on Monday November 24th . After employees have submitted their timesheet for approval, supervisors must approve the timecards by 4:00 p.m., Monday November 24th. Changes to timecards or approvals that do not get completed, within the above time frame, will not be paid and require a manual timecard submitted to payroll for payment in the next pay period.

Rod Greder and Awear Technologies Win Tekne Award

Awear Technologies, founded by Rod Greder (longtime and valued adjunct faculty member at Augsburg College), was recognized last week with a Tekne Award. The Tekne Awards recognize companies, innovations and people for technological breakthroughs that improve the lives and futures of people living in Minnesota and all over the world.

Awear won the award based upon its work in developing a safe wearable to help students enhance their attentiveness during reading, listening and studying. To continue this work, Awear has been awarded $500,000 from the National Institutes of Heath (NIH) and the Department of Education.

Chapter on Adult Learner Education

Congratulations to Lori Peterson, Dean of Professional and Graduate Studies, and Dan McGuire, Augsburg Hybrid Teaching & Learning Team consultant, who have a chapter published in Building Sustainable Futures for Adult Learners, an edited and refereed volume published in conjunction with the joint Adult Higher Educational Alliance (AHEA) and American Association of Adult and Continuing Education Conferences (AAACE). This volume fills a unique niche in the field of adult education, extending the scope of AHEA to a larger audience, and offering a current volume for scholars and practitioners based on both research and practice-based research.

Arranged thematically, Lori and Dan's chapter appears in the section, Building Futures Through Curriculum Revision, and is entitled, "Adopting and Implementing Adult Learner-Focused Hybrid Teaching and Learning: One Institution's Journey". Their work was seen as a "unique contribution" by reviewers, as "the authors framed their work in not only adult education literature, but also the proper and necessary technology literature."

Focused Conversation Continues Thursday

The second (of 2) Focused Conversations about the design and principles for the Center for Science, Business, and Religion will be held Thursday, Nov. 20, 3:40 p.m., in Lindell 301.

Daily Chapel: Trans Day of Remembrance

Transgender Day of Remembrance is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28, 1998, launched the "Remembering Our Dead" web project and a San Francisco vigil the following year. The event provides a forum for transgender communities and allies to raise awareness of the threat of violence faced by gender variant people and the persistence of prejudice felt by the transgender community. Communities organize events and activities including town hall style "teach-ins," photography and poetry exhibits and candlelit vigils. These activities make anti-transgender violence visible to stakeholders like police, the media and elected officials.

Campus Activities and Orientation is incredibly excited to announce the 2014 Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) graduates! Pippert Presents on Bakken Project

At North Dakota's first summit on human trafficking held last week in Bismark, sociology Professor Tim Pippert presented his research on the impact of the Bakken oil boom on local communities in North Dakota. The event, attended by several hundred federal, state and tribal officials as well as advocacy groups, included a screening of the new documentary BOOM. The film, which includes an interview with Pippert, was produced by the Colorado-based human rights organization iEmpathize. Pippert is currently writing a book based on his research.
