Improving Student Engagement Through Feedback

Join CTL, e-learning specialist Bonnie Tensen, and the academic LFCs for a workshop that addresses common pedagogical issues through technology. This workshop will provide faculty with tools for increasing student preparedness for class, decreasing students' confusion about grading processes, and improving students' understanding of classroom policies. Faculty will also have the opportunity to discuss their own pedagogical needs and ask about available tools.

NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship

We are pleased to provide information about the 2014-15 NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship Program at Augsburg College. This scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

We encourage you to apply for this scholarship if you:
* Are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education;
* Can demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership within your major area; and
* Show an interest in contributing to NASA's mission.

This competitive program awards 6 scholarships for spring semester, 2015. Students from traditionally under-represented groups in science and mathematics fields are especially encouraged to apply.

Assessment Understanding and Guidance Series - AUG

The Augsburg College Assessment Committee is committed to offering a variety of interactive, informational workshops and sessions, tutorials, slide presentations, and guidance, so educators and staff can learn more about assessment at convenient times that fit their schedules. Following a phased approach to assessment discovery and fulfillment, the assessment introductory AUGS Rollout Workshop will introduce and detail assessment findings from the 2013-2014 academic year.

The Rollout Workshop session will be conveniently offered on the following dates:

Thursday, November 13 from 10:15 to11:15 am in OGC 100
Monday, November 17 from 4:45 50 5:45 p.m. in OGC 100

The Rollout Workshop will:

* Provide an overview of assessment and its role in building college readiness and student learning development
* Walk faculty and staff through recent assessment discoveries
* Engage faculty and staff in interpreting what assessment findings indicate
* Provide an overview of future assessment offerings

Ever thought about living in Anderson Hall, but you don't know what a floorhouse looks like? Congrats to October Auggie Pride Award Winners

Congratulations to October Auggie Pride Award Winners: Stephen Geffre and Sarah Griesse!

Stephen Geffre has been a part of the Augsburg College community since 2003 and serves as Augsburg's staff photographer. Sarah Griesse joined Augsburg in 2006 and serves as the Dean of Students.

Here's what Stephen and Sarah's colleagues who nominated them had to say:

"Stephen works crazy hours, and on weekends, often--but during Homecoming he worked tirelessly day and night on behalf of the College. Not only was he running around campus taking photos and videos of the various events happening all week, he was also taking photos for an Augsburg Now story called "24 Hours at Augsburg." This required him--literally--to be on campus for 24 hours."

"The reason Sarah is an awesome Auggie is that she is a champion for students who have experienced sexual assault or sexual harassment. She does this by showing great care and great skill in helping students, including re-writing our policy and procedures, ensuring training for students, faculty and staff, and coordinating support for resources for students. In particular, she led the College's efforts to ensure compliance with recent legislation for the Sexual Violence Elimination Act (SaVE)."

Stephen and Sarah will each receive a $25 gift card and an Auggie "swag bag" to show off their Auggie pride!

Ceremony Marks Opening of New Veterans' Lounge

Augsburg College and U.S. Bank celebrated the opening of a new campus Veterans' Lounge with a dedication ceremony on November 10, 2014.

The newly renovated Veterans' Lounge, located in Room 110 of Oren Gateway Center, honors the contributions that student veterans have made to their country. The lounge will host meetings with veteran support staff and features a veteran recognition wall, a computer workstation, a study area, and other resources and materials.

Speaking on behalf of Augsburg were Student Veteran Representative Eric Olson (Army), Keenan O'Neill (Marine Corps), and Josh Pauer (Army). Several other student, staff, and faculty veterans were also on hand for the ceremony.

Representing U.S. Bank was Paul Peel, an Army veteran and a 2012 graduate of Augsburg's Master's in Business Administration program. Peel now works in U.S. Bank's Corporate Trust division.

U.S. Bank recently pledged $125,000 toward the building of the Center for Science, Business, and Religion at Augsburg College. The college has recognized U.S. Bank's substantial contribution to the campaign by granting naming rights to the new Veterans' Lounge.

U.S. Bank and Augsburg College are both nationally recognized as top supporters of veterans and military families. For its ongoing efforts to provide transitioning veterans the best possible experience in higher education, from navigating benefits and financial aid to securing an internship, Augsburg was named a 2015 Military Friendly® School.

2015 Annual Benefit Enrollment

The annual benefit enrollment period will be from November 10-21. Open Enrollment Information Sessions will be in the Marshall Room of Christensen Center.

Information sessions are:
November 13 at 4:45 p.m. *also streaming at: http://connect.augsburg.edu/openenrollment/
November 18 at 2:45 p.m.
November 21 at 12 p.m.

Representatives from HealthPartners, OptumHealth and Hays will be at the information sessions to answer any questions you might have about our plan offerings for 2015. Please plan to attend to learn what you need to do to enroll and/or make changes to your current benefit elections. We look forward to seeing you there.

Enrollment must be completed online. Once you have successfully completed your benefit enrollment for your health, dental, HSA and FSA elections a confirmation notice will be sent to your Augsburg email address. To make changes or enroll in Supplemental Life and AD&D insurance coverages you must complete the SunLife application for supplemental coverages and submit to the office of Human Resources no later than 4 p.m., November 21.

Due to a slight plan design change your 2014 plan elections will not carry over into 2015. If enrollment is not completed by the deadline, your plan coverage will end on December 31, 2014.

The Science of My Life and Career after Augsburg

Justin Grammens will share the "science" of his career and life experiences after completing his degree at Augsburg. He will also provide insight into current technology trends and advice on what employers are looking for from graduates in STEM fields.

A software architect and business owner for the majority of his career, Grammens co-founded Recursive Awesome, a mobile software development company which was acquired by Code42 in 2011. He is currently an engineering co-founder at Code42 Software where he is protecting the world's data with high-performance hardware and easy-to-use software solutions. Justin has filed patents with the USPTO, founded multiple technology user groups and organized conferences around the cities covering hardware and mobile technologies. He co-launched Minnesota's first Internet of Things Hack Day and is a mentor to students of all ages through CoderDojo Twin Cities and the MacStartups programs. Recently he has launched IoTWeeklyNews, a publication which covers current trends on the Internet of Things. Most importantly, he enjoys family movie nights with his wife and 2 kids.

Founded in 2001, Code42 is comprised of 400+ engineering, sales, marketing, design, and support professionals located throughout the world, headquartered in Minneapolis, MN. They are perhaps best known for CrashPlan, a system that manages and protects your digital life with easy-to-use software and high-performance hardware storage.
