Penumbra Workshop Follow-up Discussion

In October, Penumbra Theatre conducted their RACE workshop on campus. Faculty and staff are invited to build upon that work as we move toward being an even more inclusive campus. Regardless of whether or not you attended the workshop, CTL would like to invite you to keep the discussion moving forward. WL Tutors Are Ready to Help

Last year, tutors in the Writing Lab conducted well over 2,000 conferences with students on their writing assignments, and so far this fall, hundreds of students have already used this valuable support service. The lab is located on the street level of Lindell Library, just left of the circulation desk. No appointments are taken/needed. Just show up with a hard copy of your work. As the second half of this semester speeds along, the WL is a valuable support service.

TODAY Critical Thinking: How Well Are We Doing?

It's been 3 years since the last CTL workshop on Critical Thinking. Since that time, we've gathered evidence on our students' performance that might surprise you (and change the way you teach.) National evidence also underscores the urgency of redoubling our efforts in this area. Critical Thinking is one of the General Education skills embedded across the curriculum. This workshop will review our students' performance on nationally calibrated tests and cover strategies for effectively teaching critical thinking.

Mary Lowe and Lori Brandt-Hale will be offering the session on Wednesday, November 5, from 3:40-5 p.m. in OCG 111. Katie Bishop will present a summary of assessment data during the first 15 minutes.

NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship

This scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

Augsburg Receives Competitive IME Becas Grant

Augsburg College has been selected as one of eleven higher education institutions and social organizations in Minnesota to receive a 2014-15 IME Becas Fellowship Program Grant through the Mexican Consulate in St. Paul.

Augsburg will match the $12,000 grant awarded by the Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME) Fellowship Program to support our amazing DACA students in achieving the DREAM: access to higher education sin barreras (without borders). Funds will assist DACA students by closing the gap in tuition, fees and out of pocket cost so that students can direct their energy and talents towards their studies, internships, and research endeavors.

A sincere thank you to the Mexican Consulate in St. Paul, the selection committee, President Paul Pribbenow, William Mullen – V.P. of Enrollment Management, Carly Eichhorst – Director of Student Financial Services, Jay Peterson – Assistant Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, and each one of our DACA students who inspire us with their resilience and challenge us to stay true to our mission!

HLC Reaffirms Augsburg College's Accreditation

I am pleased to announce the good news that the Higher Learning Commission's Institutional Actions Council continued Augsburg's HLC accreditation, effective October 27, 2014.

In conjunction with this action, the Council included one monitoring requirement -- an interim report, due in May 2016, to provide evidence that program review has taken place, that major/program learning outcomes have been articulated and mapped to the curriculum, and that assessment of student learning data has been used to make improvements to the academic program.

Both the October reaffirmation letter from the Higher Learning Commission and the September recommendation for reaffirmation of accreditation from the HLC AQIP (Academic Quality Program) Review Panel on Reaffirmation have been posted on the College Reports page. (You must be logged in to Inside Augsburg to access that page.)

The College's next reaffirmation of accreditation will be 2022-2023. In the meantime, we have inquired with HLC about the timeline for considering the option to switch from AQIP to the Open Pathway. Once we have more information about the process, we will initiate that discussion with faculty and Cabinet.

In the next several days, we will begin to share this news via the College's various print and digital communications media. Departments, programs, or individuals wishing to share the news via social media or other communications media, please note that HLC stipulates that phrases such as "accreditation has been continued for a N-year period" should not be used. We can state that state that the College's accredited status has been continued, but if we want to include additional details, including the scheduled year of the next comprehensive evaluation, we would also need to include the information about the required interim report. My sincere thanks to all of the faculty and staff who participated in the meetings with the reviewers and the extensive work of compiling the documentation and reports for this process. 2015 Annual Benefit Enrollment

The annual benefit enrollment period will be from November 10-November 21. Open Enrollment Information Sessions will be in the Marshall Room of Christensen Center.

Representatives from HealthPartners, OptumHealth and Hays will be at the information sessions to answer any questions you might have about our plan offerings for 2015. Please plan to attend to learn what you need to do to enroll and/or make changes to your current benefit elections. We look forward to seeing you there.

Enrollment must be completed online. Once you have successfully completed your benefit enrollment for your health, dental, HSA and FSA elections a confirmation notice will be sent to your Augsburg email address. To make changes or enroll in Supplemental Life and AD&D insurance coverages you must complete the SunLife application for supplemental coverages and submit to the office of Human Resources no later than 4 pm on November 21.

Due to a slight plan design change your 2014 plan elections will not carry over into 2015. If enrollment is not completed by the deadline, your plan coverage will end on December 31, 2014.

INROADS STEM Recruitment Visit Wednesday, Nov. 5

INROADS recruiter and Augsburg alumnus Matthew Shannon will visit the STEM Programs Office, Science 154, on Wednesday, November 5th from 9:30-11:30 a.m., to seek STEM applicants for their internship development program.

The Mission of the INROADS internship program is to develop and place talented underserved youth in business and industry, and prepare them for corporate and community leadership. INROADS is an international organization with over 35 offices serving nearly 2,000 interns at over 200 companies.

INROADS is seeking talented STEM students who are freshman, sophomores or juniors (must have at least one more summer before graduation).

Actress, Idil Ibrahim, at Augsburg TODAY

Idil Ibrahim, featured in the film "Fishing Without Nets", will be on campus Wednesday November 5th from 1:50-3:00 is Science 123 discussing her work.

Ibrahim is an accomplished actress, director, writer, producer, and humanitarian. Her work has screened at Sundance, the Toronto Film Festival, and more. She has also won several awards and honors. "Fishing Without Nets," winner of the directing award at Sundance, tells a fictional story of Somali piracy told from the perspective of a Somali fisherman. Idil plays the fisherman's wife. She also directed, produced, and filmed "Behind the Scenes of Fishing Without Nets" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFqbt0XAGfo

"Fishing Without Nets" will be shown in Sateren Auditorium on Friday, November 7th at 5:00pm. The director and producer of this important film will also be here to speak that evening.

Augsburg Women's Soccer/Volleyball Playoff Info.

The Augsburg College women's soccer and volleyball teams are both top seeds in the upcoming Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs, and will host home semifinal games this week.

The Auggie women's soccer team won the outright MIAC regular-season title on Saturday night, and will receive a first-round bye in the MIAC playoffs. Augsburg (14-4 overall, 9-2 MIAC) will host No. 5-seed St. Thomas (8-6-4 overall, 6-3-1 MIAC), which claimed a shoot out win over No. 4-seed Saint Benedict in a quarterfinal on Tuesday (11/4), on Wednesday (11/5) at 7 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field. Should Augsburg win on Wednesday, it would host the other semifinal winner in the conference playoff title game at Edor Nelson Field on Saturday (11/8) at a time to be determined.

The Auggie volleyball team claimed a share of the MIAC regular-season title with St. Thomas for the second year in a row, earning the No. 1 seed in the playoffs and a first-round bye by virtue of its win over the Tommies earlier in the season. Augsburg (22-4 overall, 10-1 MIAC) will host No. 4-seed Saint Mary's (20-12 overall, 7-4 MIAC), which topped No. 5 Bethel 3-1 in Tuesday's quarterfinal match, on Thursday (11/6) at 7 p.m. at Si Melby Hall. Should Augsburg win on Thursday, it would host the other semifinal winner in the conference playoff title game at Si Melby Hall on Saturday at a time to be determined.

In each case, the conference's playoff champion will receive the MIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III national playoffs.

Tickets for the playoff events are $7 for adults and $3 for students (children 5 years old and younger are free). There are no senior discounts. ALL patrons, including Augsburg students, staff and faculty, must pay admission. The only passes honored are MIAC-issued passes.

The Augsburg athletic department will pay for admission for the first 150 Augsburg students at the door for each of its home playoff games. Students must bring and show their Augsburg student ID in order to receive the free admission.

Augsburg fans are also encouraged to wear their Augsburg MAROON for all Auggie playoff games!

Augsburg will also have a video webcast and live statistics of each playoff game, available on its GameCentral portal via Stretch Internet.
