Writing Lab Tutors Are Ready for You

Last year, tutors in the Writing Lab conducted well over 2,000 conferences with students on their writing assignments, and the Lab is now open and wonderful writing tutors are ready to start the new academic year. In the first two weeks of operation this fall, tutors have held over 130 sessions with Augsburg writers. The lab is located on the street level of Lindell Library, just left of the circulation desk. No appointments are taken/needed. Just show up.

Here are the hours:

Tuesday: 12:30-3:00 p.m.; 3:30-6:00 p.m.; 7:30-10 p.m.

Urban Plunge

Come to a fantastic training put on by Urban Plunge to explore the problems and opportunities of our urban environment on October 4 from 1-5:10pm. Urban Plunge is an experience designed to show gifts and challenges about Augsburg's urban setting through a lens of faith, specifically the Sermon On The Mount (Matthew 1:1-16). Some of these challenges are: poverty, hunger, homelessness, and racism; we also explore our gifts: interfaith dialogue, public faith, and what we can do about the challenges. We want to give this experience to youth groups from the metro and greater Minnesota area. This training is meant so that you will be able to be an Urban Plunge guide for the youth in their experience. If you need any more incentive, Afro Deli will be served after this training. Center for Teaching and Learning Reading Circle

Message: "The Roundhouse" by Louise Erdrich
Facilitators: Bob Cowgill (English) & Elise Marubbio (American Indian Studies)
Schedule: 12:20-1:30 Wednesdays, Oct. 22 and November 19
Riverside Room, Christensen Center

Set in 1988 on a North Dakota reservation, the 14th novel from Pulitzer finalist Louise Erdrich is the compelling story of a 13-year-old boy thrust into manhood after his mother is the victim of a brutal crime. The Star Tribune praises the book as "an artfully balanced mystery, thriller and coming-of-age story… [a] gripping tale of the effects of violence on a family." This novel is the Many Voices Project common text used in English 111 this school year. The Reading Circle will examine Erdrich's exploration of the lives of Native Americans and themes of violence, family, sovereignty and loss, and discuss how one facilitates discussion of these sometime difficult topics skillfully and with cultural sensitivity.

Faculty and staff may sign up for the Reading Circle and pick up a book in the Department of Nursing SC 116. Please read to p. 148 for the first session. Participants are also invited to have lunch in the cafeteria courtesy of the Batalden Endowment.

Volunteer as a Debate Judge This Weekend

Minnesota Urban Debate League needs High School Novice and Middle School Debate judges! This weekend and many to follow, we need your help judging debates and supporting Twin Cities students. Judges watch tournaments, decide the winners, and give feedback to students to help them improve.

This weekend we have our first tournament at Washington Tech Magnet School. We need novice judges to help us out. Morning (8 a.m. - 12 p.m.) and afternoon shifts (12:30 - 5:00 p.m.) are available. We provide all the training needed and have training sessions this Thursday, Oct. 2 (located conveniently in the Foss Center) and Saturday, Oct. 4 at the tournament.

High School tournaments are on weekends, with shifts in the morning and afternoon. The first Middle School Tournament is Tuesday, Nov. 18 - Thursday, Nov. 20.

Involvement with debate correlates with an increase of reading proficiency of students by as many as three grade levels, as well as boosting self-esteem, and improving analytical and critical-thinking skills of students. We support hundreds of youth from all over the Twin Cities, with a focus on involvement of students of color and other under-served groups. We need your support to reach even more students.

October is Veterans' Voices Month

You are invited to join the MFA Faculty as we recognize October as Veterans' Voices Month

During October each of the MFA mentors and their students will be reading and discussing work that illuminates the experiences of those who have served in the armed forces. The project bridges the disconnect between veterans and their civilian counterparts by participating in the initiative passed by the Minnesota State Legislature:

"The month of October is designated as Veterans' Voices Month in recognition of the state's desire to honor, recognize, and celebrate the contributions of veterans. Schools, organizations, and communities in the state are encouraged to hold events and programs that honor veterans and educate students and citizens about the unique culture of the military by sharing and studying veterans' experiences through stories, essays, poetry, and art from the men and women who have served in the armed forces."
(Minnesota State Legislature, 2014)

The legislative initiative was lead by Jay Moad, Former Air Force C-130 pilot with over a hundred combat sorties, Assistant Professor of English at the US Air Force Academy, a fiction editor for the journal War, Literature and the Arts, an Augsburg MFA student seeking a multi-genre degree (fiction, playwriting, and poetry), and a Delta Airline pilot. The Augsburg Community is invited to include in classes and meetings a reflection on "...an essay, story, poetry, OpEd piece... whatever works for your area of study that can help students get a glimpse into this different world and all the repercussions of war across society."(Jay Moad)

Fall Blood Drive on Campus 10/8

McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Fall 2014

Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for Fall 2014 admission. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair teams Scholars with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps them to achieve that dream.

The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. Also, the program assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2015.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

New Copy Request System - Now Live

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

I am pleased to announce that the new copy request system is now live. With the help of a beta test group we have been working hard over the last few months to complete this project. This new system has been built to allow users to easily set up their job(s) and includes a lot of new features: uploading multiple files, sending one request for multiple jobs, and reviewing your job summary before submitting it to the copy center. The link will be on the Inside Augsburg home page.

Training for the new copy request system has been scheduled for Wednesdays and Thursdays in October. If you would like to participate in these training sessions, please RSVP by sending an email to Gao Vang at copyctr@augsburg.edu. Seats are limited so please reserve your seats ahead of time. These training sessions will last approximately 20-30 minutes.

Theater Department - Auditions for Trouble In Mind
The Augsburg Theater Department will hold auditions for the winter 2014 -2015 main stage production, Trouble In Mind, written by Alice Childress and directed by Dominic Taylor:
Wednesday, October 1 3:00-6:00 p.m.
Callbacks: Thursday, October 2 7:15-10:15 p.m.

Auditions will be held in the Green room located in Foss Center. Further information, as well as an audition sign-up sheet is posted on the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater door in the Atrium of the Foss Center.

All Augsburg students are welcome to audition! We are looking to cast 2 Black Women, 2 Black Men, 1 or 2 White Women, 2 or 3 White Men and 1 person of any ethnicity. Please prepare one contemporary monologues, as well as 8 Capella bars of music. Audition time is 5 minutes. Copies of Trouble in Mind have been placed on reserve in the library, under the name of Michael Burden. It is recommended that you read the entire play in order to have a sense of the tone of the piece and the nature of the characters.

- Please arrive at the audition site at least 10 minutes before your scheduled audition time. Those who arrive after their scheduled time may not be allowed to audition.
- Please wear appropriate attire to auditions. (I.e. dress accordingly as one would for a professional audition. No jeans, flip-flops, T-shirts, crop tops, halter tops, etc.)
- Please bring to auditions a complete list of all conflicts you may have with the rehearsal and performance schedule, including work, classes, social commitments (such as weddings, anniversaries, etc.) and ensemble performances. Actors should declare all known conflicts, in writing, at the time of the general audition.
Fall Rehearsals begin November 10 - December 12, 2014
Winter Rehearsals begin January 12 - 29, 2015
Performance dates are January 30 - February 8, 2015

Description of Trouble In Mind:
Willetta Mayer, a talented, but struggling African American actress, has been cast to star in a Broadway Show, the anti-lynching play Chaos in Belleville. She has paid her dues and is ready for her star turn, but is this play as enlightened as she's hoping? Chaos is written by a liberal white male and directed by a white male. Willetta's journey shows us that theatrical practices often put show business and integrity on a collision course. When this collision also includes race and gender, it is a compelling and potent dramatic brew. Trouble in Mind, written in 1955 by Alice Childress, creates a theatrical microcosm with real world reverberations.

MNUDL and Augsburg Debate Team Open House

Please join us for Minnesota Urban Debate League and the Augsburg Debate Team's Co-Open House on Wednesday, October 8 from 3 - 6 p.m. We will have a short program at 4:45 p.m. and refreshments will be served.

Students - come hear about joining the team! As a student debater you will have the chance to debate a fun topic and travel across the country (for free!). You will make new friends, learn or expand your public speaking, research, and critical thinking skills and have fun in the process!

You will have the chance to meet Augsburg's new debate coach - Courtney Schauer and hear about the launch of Augsburg's debate team - as well as the MN Urban Debate League's expansion to more schools in our community

This year college students all across the country will be debating - Resolved: The United States should legalize all or nearly all of one or more of the following in the United States: marijuana, online gambling, physician-assisted suicide, prostitution, the sale of human organs.

A fascinating topic - that would have applicability to many areas of study - as students debate both for and against the issue.

Come and hear more about it - and enjoy some cake on us.
