Teaching and Learning

Center for Teaching and Learning Reading Circle

Message: "The Roundhouse" by Louise Erdrich
Facilitators: Bob Cowgill (English) & Elise Marubbio (American Indian Studies)
Schedule: 12:20-1:30 Wednesdays, Oct. 22 and November 19
Riverside Room, Christensen Center

Set in 1988 on a North Dakota reservation, the 14th novel from Pulitzer finalist Louise Erdrich is the compelling story of a 13-year-old boy thrust into manhood after his mother is the victim of a brutal crime. The Star Tribune praises the book as "an artfully balanced mystery, thriller and coming-of-age story… [a] gripping tale of the effects of violence on a family." This novel is the Many Voices Project common text used in English 111 this school year. The Reading Circle will examine Erdrich's exploration of the lives of Native Americans and themes of violence, family, sovereignty and loss, and discuss how one facilitates discussion of these sometime difficult topics skillfully and with cultural sensitivity.

Faculty and staff may sign up for the Reading Circle and pick up a book in the Department of Nursing SC 116. Please read to p. 148 for the first session. Participants are also invited to have lunch in the cafeteria courtesy of the Batalden Endowment.

Questions can be directed to Matt Maruggi (maruggi@augsburg.edu) or Joyce Miller (millerj2@augsburg.edu).

Urban Plunge

Come to a fantastic training put on by Urban Plunge to explore the problems and opportunities of our urban environment on October 4 from 1-5:10 p.m. Urban Plunge is an experience designed to show gifts and challenges about Augsburg's urban setting through a lens of faith, specifically the Sermon On The Mount (Matthew 1:1-16). Some of these challenges are: poverty, hunger, homelessness, and racism; we also explore our gifts: interfaith dialogue, public faith, and what we can do about the challenges. We want to give this experience to youth groups from the metro and greater Minnesota area. This training is meant so that you will be able to be an Urban Plunge guide for the youth in their experience. If you need any more incentive, Afro Deli will be served after this training. If you are interested email me at lewisg@augsburg.edu.

Call for Honors Course Proposals & Honors Council

Call for Proposals & Volunteers

Elective courses proposals can be on any subject, using any pedagogy, but must have a strong potential audience among honors students as an elective course. Creative, specialized, or experimental courses are encouraged. Resources may be available for courses with special funding needs. Course concept proposals should be 1-2 pages in length, using the attached form. Proposals selected for development will be asked to provide more detailed course design, schedule and funding. More detailed criteria are included below.

Tuesday, October 7, 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., in OGC 100

Honors Council Volunteers: the Honors Program is also looking for two people to join the honors council and serve as honors faculty house advisors. The honor council is the governing committee for the honors program and oversees policy, curriculum, budget and admissions and graduation of students. The honors council meets about once a month on average (more near scholarship weekend).

Once per year, honors council members serve on the selection committee for scholarship weekend that decides admission to the program and awards merit scholarships for the president's scholarships, international president's scholarships, and honors regents scholarships. The selection committee only meets on the Saturday of scholarship weekend after student interviews are done (Feb. 14th this year).

And finally, honor council members also serve as house advisors and attend four house meetings per year on Mondays from 5:10pm-6:00pm, providing academic advising about honors curriculum. The house meetings are student run: they set their own agenda's, have student elected leaders, and create programming throughout the year. New Bookstore Manager Announced

As we wish Laura Forgey a fond farewell, we are pleased to announce the new bookstore manager who will start at Augsburg on October 6. Josh Schweitzer joined Barnes & Noble at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton, Wisconsin in the spring of 2009. He quickly joined the Barnes & Noble management training program (called "Bestseller") and immersed himself in all aspects of the bookstore business.

In 2012, Josh was promoted to the assistant manager role. As an assistant manager, Josh was responsible for not only delivering an exceptional in store experience for customers, faculty, and staff, but worked closely with his campus partners to educate students during the orientation process and bookstore tours. He was also able to engage with the faculty on campus through meetings, sharing insights and innovation in the ever-changing textbook environment, and attending campus wide events.

Josh's commitment to student success and campus outreach, along with his knowledge of Barnes & Noble systems and processes will allow him to continue building upon the legacy that Laura leaves behind. Please stop by the bookstore to introduce yourself and welcome Josh in his first few weeks here.

McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Fall 2014

Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for Fall 2014 admission. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair teams Scholars with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps them to achieve that dream.

The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. Also, the program assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2015.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

If you are interested in learning more about the McNair Scholars Program, please contact Lara Crombie, Program Assistant at crombie@augsburg.edu or (612) 330-1380 to schedule an appointment. Don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions about the program or if you're unsure whether or not you qualify.

Application Deadline: Monday, October 13, 4 p.m.

October is Veterans' Voices Month

You are invited to join the MFA Faculty as we recognize October as Veterans' Voices Month

During October each of the MFA mentors and their students will be reading and discussing work that illuminates the experiences of those who have served in the armed forces. The project bridges the disconnect between veterans and their civilian counterparts by participating in the initiative passed by the Minnesota State Legislature:

"The month of October is designated as Veterans' Voices Month in recognition of the state's desire to honor, recognize, and celebrate the contributions of veterans. Schools, organizations, and communities in the state are encouraged to hold events and programs that honor veterans and educate students and citizens about the unique culture of the military by sharing and studying veterans' experiences through stories, essays, poetry, and art from the men and women who have served in the armed forces." (Minnesota State Legislature, 2014)

The legislative initiative was lead by Jay Moad, former Air Force C-130 pilot with over a hundred combat sorties, Assistant Professor of English at the US Air Force Academy, a fiction editor for the journal War, Literature and the Arts, an Augsburg MFA student seeking a multi-genre degree (fiction, playwriting, and poetry), and a Delta Airline pilot. The Augsburg Community is invited to include in classes and meetings a reflection on "...an essay, story, poetry, OpEd piece... whatever works for your area of study that can help students get a glimpse into this different world and all the repercussions of war across society." (Jay Moad)

Watch for the StarTribune Op-Ed piece in October.

I am giving you plenty of notice so that you can gather your materials, and perhaps use this event as an incentive to clean out your personal records!
