Teaching and Learning

Webinar | Assessing Intercultural + Global Skills

The Office of International Programs, The Center for Teaching and Learning, and General Education invite you to attend the following Webinar:

Intercultural Competence and Student Development:
Working Toward a Fuller Picture of Global Learning

A NAFSA ACADEMIC PROGRAMS FACULTY CONVERSATION

Date & Time: September 24, 2014, 1:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m. (CDT)
Location: Augsburg Room
No RSVP needed.

Kick off the new academic year with this stimulating conversation that taps into NAFSA's growing community of practice focused on global learning.

Several instruments are designed to help locate college students on intercultural scales and measure changes in their perspectives over time. What does the data from these techniques reveal - and not - about students and their intercultural competence?

A distinguished panel will present an overview of these instruments and the data each provides. Participants will then join in the conversation to explore:

how students develop in ways that we are now learning to measure;
analyses and questions we need to illuminate such change;
pedagogies and learning experiences we can imagine to better align theory and practice.

Faculty Conversations are designed for faculty members, researchers, and international educators interested in student learning outcomes and the educational experiences--curricular and co-curricular--created to help students gain and practice global knowledge, skills, and perspectives.

Urban Plunge

Come to a fantastic training put on by Urban Plunge to explore the problems and opportunities of our urban environment on October 4th from 1-5:10 p.m. Urban Plunge is an experience designed to show gifts and challenges about Augsburg's urban setting through a lens of faith, specifically the Sermon On The Mount (Matthew 1:1-16). Some of these challenges are: poverty, hunger, homelessness, and racism; we also explore our gifts: interfaith dialogue, public faith, and what we can do about the challenges. We want to give this experience to youth groups from the metro and greater Minnesota area. This training is meant so that you will be able to be an Urban Plunge guide for the youth in their experience. If you need any more incentive, Afro Deli will be served after this training. If you would like to get involved please email me at lewisg@augsburg.edu

McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Fall 2014

Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for Fall 2014 admission. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair teams Scholars with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps them to achieve that dream.

The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. Also, the program assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4,000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2015.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Brought to you by the Center for Global Education at Augsburg College

International internship programs create an unmatched global working and educational experience. Attend this information session to find out more about the benefits of choosing an international internship. We will answer questions such as:

The Center for Global Education (CGE) makes it easy for you to intern abroad, by finding internship opportunities for you. 85% of CGE returned students said that the program had an impact on landing them a job after graduation (from a recent survey of CGE alumni).

The Center for Global Education is currently accepting applications for its study abroad sites that offer internships. Don't think we have anything for you? Here's just glimpse of the types of internships CGE students have had in the past, in MANY fields of work & study:

Personal Document Destruction Event

Faculty, staff and students are welcome to bring their personal confidential documents that need to be shredded to a FREE Shred Event sponsored by Augsburg Facilities Management. Bring your material (2 boxes or bags maximum, please) to the Shred Right truck parked between Sverdrup and Lindell Library on Wednesday, October 22, between 8:30-9:30 a.m. You must present your documents at this time; I am sorry we cannot offer early pick-up and storage of your personal documents. If you are not available at this time, it is your choice if you wish to entrust one of your co-workers to bring the documents to the truck for you. An Augsburg ID will be required, as we unfortunately cannot make this a community event.

I am giving you plenty of notice so that you can gather your materials, and perhaps use this event as an incentive to clean out your personal records! We can't give advice about what records you can destroy, but do your own research to figure out what you can get rid of from your home desk or file cabinet!

All Hands Meeting - Today, 11:30, Hoversten Chapel

The Fall 2014 All Hands meeting is today, Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 11:30 a.m. in Hoversten Chapel. The plan is to start the meeting promptly at 11:30 a.m. and have President Pribbenow conclude his remarks before those with noon classes need to depart.

Because of the brief time for the meeting, we have posted a document on the All Hands 2014-15 page (the top link on the College Reports page on Inside Augsburg) that provides a high-level overview of enrollment, financial and fundraising data. Some of this information may be referenced during the All Hands meeting, but if you don't have a chance to access it before then, the document will stay online for you to review at your convenience.

Those interested in accessing the meeting from another location can do so by going to http://www.livestream.com/augsburgmeeting. This link also is posted on the All Hands 2014-15 page on Inside Augsburg.

For those unable to attend today's meeting, we will post an audio recording for listening at a later date.
