Webinar | Assessing Intercultural + Global Skills

The Office of International Programs, The Center for Teaching and Learning, and General Education invite you to attend the following Webinar:

Intercultural Competence and Student Development:
Working Toward a Fuller Picture of Global Learning

A NAFSA ACADEMIC PROGRAMS FACULTY CONVERSATION

Date & Time: September 24, 2014, 1:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m. (CDT)
Location: Augsburg Room
No RSVP needed.

Kick off the new academic year with this stimulating conversation that taps into NAFSA's growing community of practice focused on global learning.

Several instruments are designed to help locate college students on intercultural scales and measure changes in their perspectives over time. What does the data from these techniques reveal - and not - about students and their intercultural competence?

A distinguished panel will present an overview of these instruments and the data each provides. Participants will then join in the conversation to explore:

how students develop in ways that we are now learning to measure;
analyses and questions we need to illuminate such change;
pedagogies and learning experiences we can imagine to better align theory and practice
Faculty Conversations are designed for faculty members, researchers, and international educators interested in student learning outcomes and the educational experiences--curricular and co-curricular--created to help students gain and practice global knowledge, skills, and perspectives.

PRESENTERS

Kenneth Cushner, EdD
Professor, College of Education, Health, and Human Services, Kent State University

Helen Marx, PhD
Assistant Professor, Department of Elementary Education, Southern Connecticut State University

Craig N. Shealy, PhD
Professor, Department of Graduate Psychology, James Madison University

You're Invited: Penumbra Theatre Company's RACE Workshop

October 7, 3:40-5:40 p.m. Foss Studio
Jointly Sponsored by Academic Affairs and the Center for Teaching and Learning

Faculty and Staff - You are invited to participate in Penumbra Theatre Company's RACE Workshop. As part of Augsburg's commitment to being a welcoming place for all, this workshop is designed to continue the work of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee as well as build upon the momentum generated through the Creating an Inclusive Campus Conference. During this two-hour session, you will participate in a variety of activities that facilitate the exploration of your identity and the examination how your sense of self affects your perception of others. Monologues by Penumbra's performance artists will help us hone in on the things that nurture or hinder human connection. By participating in this workshop, we hope to give you some tools to foster a deeper connection with students by first giving you the space to deeply connect with your own self.

Space is limited for this event so please RSVP to ctl@augsburg.edu.

McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Fall 2014

Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for Fall 2014 admission. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair teams Scholars with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps them to achieve that dream.

The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. Also, the program assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4,000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2015.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

If you are interested in learning more about the McNair Scholars Program, please contact Lara Crombie, Program Assistant at crombie@augsburg.edu or (612) 330-1380 to schedule an appointment. Don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions about the program or if you're unsure whether or not you qualify.

Application Deadline: Monday, October 13, 4 p.m.

Christensen Symposium

The Christensen Center invites you to hear Rev. Nadia Bolz-Weber speak about "The Spirituality of a Total Screw-Up". She will speak on October 1, at 10:00 a.m. in the Hoversten Chapel. All are welcome and encouraged to come.

http://www.augsburg.edu/ccv/events/christensen-symposium/

Rev. Nadia Bolz-Weber is the founding pastor of House for All Sinners and Saints in Denver, Colorado. She is the author of "Salvation on the Small Screen? 24 Hours of Christian Television" (Seabury 2008) and the New York Times Bestselling theological memoir, "Pastrix: The Cranky Beautiful Faith of a Sinner & Saint" (Jericho 2013). She blogs at www.sarcasticlutheran.com and Jim Wallis' www.Godspolitics.com. Her writings can be found in the Christian Century, The Lutheran Magazine and Patheos.com. Nadia has been featured in The Washington Post, NPR's Morning Edition, The Daily Beast and on CNN.

Nobody really believes she's an ordained pastor in the ELCA. Maybe it's the sleeve tattoos or the fact that she swears like a truck driver. Either way…she's fine with it. Nadia lives in Denver with her family of four where she can be found writing bios in the third person, lifting weights, and walking her Great Dane, Zacchaeus.

All Hands Meeting Tomorrow: Data and Livestream Info.

All members of the campus community are invited to attend the Fall 2014 All Hands meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 23, 11:30 a.m. in Hoversten Chapel. Since we are not altering the class schedule tomorrow for the meeting, the plan is to start the meeting promptly at 11:30 a.m. and have President Pribbenow conclude his remarks before those with noon classes need to depart.

Because of the relatively brief time for the meeting, we have posted a document on the All Hands 2014-15 page (the top link on the College Reports page on Inside Augsburg) that provides a high-level overview of enrollment, financial and fundraising data. Some of this information may be referenced during the All Hands meeting, but if you don't have a chance to access it before then, the document will stay online for you to review at your convenience.

Those interested in accessing the meeting from another location can do so by going to http://www.livestream.com/augsburgmeeting. This link will also be posted on the All Hands 2014-15 page on Inside Augsburg.

For those unable to attend tomorrow's meeting, we will post an audio recording of the full meeting—including any questions and discussion—for listening at a later date.
