McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Fall 2014

Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for Fall 2014 admission. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair teams Scholars with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps them to achieve that dream.

The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. Also, the program assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4,000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2015.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

RACE Workshop with Penumbra Theatre

Faculty and Staff - You are invited to participate in Penumbra Theatre Company's RACE Workshop. As part of Augsburg's commitment to being a welcoming place for all, this workshop is designed to continue the work of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee as well as build upon the momentum generated through the Creating an Inclusive Campus Conference. During this two-hour session, you will participate in a variety of activities that facilitate the exploration of your identity and the examination how your sense of self affects your perception of others. Monologues by Penumbra's performance artists will help us hone in on the things that nurture or hinder human connection. By participating in this workshop, we hope to give you some tools to foster a deeper connection with students by first giving you the space to deeply connect with your own self.

Campus Cupboard Food Shelf is Open

The Campus Cupboard food shelf is now open Tuesdays 11:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Fridays 2-4 p.m. The food shelf is open to any Augsburg student to use.

The Augsburg College food shelf, Campus Cupboard, provides free food to students throughout the academic year. Campus Cupboard is located in Hoversten Chapel of Foss Center by the back stairwell to the balcony.

If you are an Augsburg student who would like to use the food shelf, stop by during open hours. Students may pick out five food items each visit. An Augsburg student ID is required. (Names will not be recorded, only ID numbers.)

If you would like to donate to the food shelf:
Donations of non-perishable food items are accepted in green collection bins at the Welcome Desk and Einstein's (in Christensen), the Campus Ministry/Theater Office (in Foss), and the Urn/Mort and Anderson dorm lobbies.

You can access the All Hands Communication page from the top link on the College Reports page OR by clicking the "All Hands 2014-15" on the home page of Inside Augsburg. (You must be logged in to access the All Hands page.)

The All Hands Communication schedule includes the Fall 2014 All Hands meeting (which is this coming Tuesday), Focused Conversation sessions, planned email communications, and links to the most recent all-faculty/staff email communications from President Pribbenow.

The page also allows you to click on the date/time/location for a given event and add it to your calendar. All of the events are also posted on the Inside Augsburg calendar. (Again, you need to be logged in to see them.) Each Focused Conversation is offered twice, and you are invited to attend whichever session dates fit in your schedule.

Fall All Hands Meeting is Tuesday, Sept. 23

All members of the campus community are invited to attend the Fall 2014 All Hands meeting this coming Tuesday, Sept. 23, 11:30 a.m. in Hoversten Chapel.

We are not altering the class schedule on Sept. 23 for the All Hands meeting. The plan is to start the meeting promptly at 11:30 a.m. and have President Pribbenow conclude his remarks before those with noon classes need to depart.

We will post an audio recording of the full meeting--including any questions and discussion--for those interested in listening at a later date. Access to connect to the meeting from off-site locations will be available. Information about remote access will be available Monday.

The Augsburg Annual Giving team is gearing up for this year's Give to the Max Day, which is on Thursday November 13, 2014!

Our team is here to support you throughout your project, from meeting with you to develop an initial idea and goals, to setting up a communication timeline and creating messaging for your audience. Most project leaders spend approximately 2-4 hours per week on their fundraising projects between now and November 13. We are here to help you every step of the way!

Augsburg Theater Department Auditions: Egg

The Augsburg Theater Arts Department will hold auditions for the student directed production, Egg, by Mark Steven Jensen, directed by Mawrgyn Roper. An audition sign-up sheet is posted on the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater door in the atrium of Foss Center.

Casting: 2 female roles; 1 egg (of any gender)

Description of Egg: Bertha and Louise are wandering in an empty wasteland when they both spot an egg at the same time. Bertha wants to turn the egg into an omelet; Louise wants to paint the egg for Easter. They each try to convince the other to give up dibs on the egg. The debate turns more and more violent and events spiral out of control. The production will use highly physical performance techniques with puppetry and clowning to tell the story of two women and an egg.

Sign up for a slot on the theater door in the Foss Atrium and prepare a short piece of your choice (poem, lyrics, lines from a play, etc.) that incorporates movement. Your audition piece should be no longer than two minutes. The goal is to see you move with words. Try to tell a story with your body and the text. Don't overthink it! All ideas are right.

Copies of Egg are on the theater desk in the Campus Ministry suite (Foss 104). It is recommended that you read the entire play in order to have a sense of tone in the piece and the nature of the characters, which may help generate ideas for your audition piece.

Rehearsals will begin Monday, October 6.
Performance dates are Friday, November 14 through Sunday, November 16.

Indios de las Americas (Dance Show)

With September 15 marking the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, ALAS has dedicated an entire week to share the Latino culture among the entire Augsburg community. A set of events have been put together by ALAS member, in hopes to raise awareness and educate others about the rich Latino culture a large population of Augsburg students hold.

As a final celebration of our Hispanic roots a dance show will be hosted TODAY. Come see dances by several Latin American dance groups, along with a Native American dance group.

Longfellow Pet Waste Cleanup Day

This event marks the culmination of a grant awarded to Augsburg College by the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO) managed by Dr. Matt Beckman and students in biology. We aim to minimize E.coli contamination of the Mississippi River by pet waste. The event is educational and service oriented. Gloves and bags will be provided.

Personal Document Destruction Event

Faculty, staff and students are welcome to bring their personal confidential documents that need to be shredded to a FREE Shred Event sponsored by Augsburg Facilities Management. Bring your material (2 boxes or bags maximum, please) to the Shred Right truck parked between Sverdrup and Lindell Library on Wednesday, October 22, between 8:30-9:30 a.m. You must present your documents at this time; I am sorry we cannot offer early pick-up and storage of your personal documents. If you are not available at this time, it is your choice if you wish to entrust one of your co-workers to bring the documents to the truck for you. An Augsburg ID will be required, as we unfortunately cannot make this a community event.

I am giving you plenty of notice so that you can gather your materials, and perhaps use this event as an incentive to clean out your personal records! We can't give advice about what records you can destroy, but do your own research to figure out what you can get rid of from your home desk or file cabinet!

Gift Announcement: Dr. Engebretson Gift to CSBR

"The Center for Science, Business, and Religion really encapsulates a substantial part of what Augsburg is about: an environment that celebrates both the mind and the spirit, and also celebrates the reality of Christian vocation," says popular physics professor Mark Engebretson, who retired--sort of--in May. He and his wife tithe regularly, but have also pledged a substantial CSBR donation and urge other faculty to follow suit.

Today, academic and worldly endeavors cannot be separated. "As Christians, we're here to make the world a better place or at least support it so it doesn't fall apart, and that means the world of work. At the same time, we're thinking beings and we're curious," he explains. "That's a basic contrast to the way the world was 2,000 years ago. Education then was for elite thinkers and had no practical consequences; work was done by slaves."
Deep Intersections

Deep thought about how disciplines intersect is nothing new for Engebretson, who joined the Augsburg faculty in 1976 after earning a Master's in divinity at Luther Theological Seminary and a physics Ph.D., at the University of Minnesota. He declined to choose between science and religion.

"I was interested in too many things, and certainly both science and Christianity," he says. "I applied to every ELCA college in the country and also inquired about posts at two international Christian colleges, in Tokyo and Beirut." He chose Augsburg for its tenure track and the opportunity to teach courses such as Science and Ethics; Physics, Computers, and Society; and Issues in Science and Religion.
Subversives in Action

Science and religion have been connected for a long time, he says, citing initial Catholic church suspicions that Copernicus and Galileo were closet Lutherans whose theology was subversive. "Some people have trouble making those connections, and once in a while, there's friction between the two," he says. The ongoing brouhaha over the evolution theories of Darwin and others is another example. "The idea that life developed from simple forms bothered a lot of people and still does. The hope that I could shed light rather than heat on those topics is why I wanted to teach at an ELCA college."

Engebretson studies the earth's space environment and radiation belts, and was one of eight U.S., Canadian, and Japanese scientists chosen to consult with NASA on a recent satellite mission. Augsburg, one of the very first small colleges to give physics undergraduates the opportunity to do cutting-edge research, owns and manages experimental instruments that measure magnetic fields at remote sites in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Engebretson is delighted that outside sources have funded almost all of his research work, making scarce resources available to others. Since 2008, he has brought in more than $2.2 million in National Science Foundation grants.

Needs for Space Shifting

Building facility requirements used to be minimal. "Our space physics projects didn't need a lot of specialized equipment in labs because it was all in space, all over the world. Research could take place in a college stretched for dollars," he says. "But now that we're doing more research in chemistry, biology and computer science as well as physics, we're running out of room and confronting limitations in a pretty old building."

He recalls the 1990s, when the Physics Department won National Science Foundation funding to renovate and expand its lab facilities. "Once that was done, enrollment increased almost immediately and has remained higher ever since, so we have a data point. Having attractive facilities and enough space means we can have a better program."

Although he has officially given up teaching, Engebretson will still conduct research (two multi-year proposals were recently funded) at Augsburg, as well as in Maryland, where he will be a frequent visitor at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. He will also continue to mentor students, a role he relishes.

"Having one-on-one relationships with students is a wonderful way of learning and growing as a professional. And to use that professional creativity in all those various ways, we need buildings," he says. "The CSBR is a wonderful idea that exemplifies a lot of what I love about Lutheran Christianity, the theology that undergirds this place."
