Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Traffic Restrictions (Riverside Avenue)

The Minneapolis Bike Tour is being detoured from its scheduled route due to a mud slide on West River Parkway. Due to this detour the eastbound lane of Riverside Avenue from 20th Ave - 26th Ave will be closed Sunday morning from approximately 6:50.a.m. - 9:00 a.m. The westbound lane will continue to be open and available for regular traffic. There will be three park police officers in the area directing eastbound traffic around the detour, these officers will also stop bikes in case emergency vehicles need access to that stretch of road. The city will remove any barricades used to detour traffic as soon as the last bike has made it through. If you have any questions call DPS at (612) 330-1717.

Music Main Floor Restrooms Remodel

Both women's and men's restrooms on the main floor of the Charles S. Anderson Music Hall will undergo remodeling from September 15-30. They will be worked on one at a time, with the other rest room labeled "Gender Neutral" during the work.

RACE Workshop with Penumbra Theatre

Jointly Sponsored by Academic Affairs and the Center for Teaching and Learning

Faculty and Staff - You are invited to participate in Penumbra Theatre Company's RACE Workshop. As part of Augsburg's commitment to being a welcoming place for all, this workshop is designed to continue the work of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee as well as build upon the momentum generated through the Creating an Inclusive Campus Conference. During this two-hour session, you will participate in a variety of activities that facilitate the exploration of your identity and the examination how your sense of self affects your perception of others. Monologues by Penumbra's performance artists will help us hone in on the things that nurture or hinder human connection. By participating in this workshop, we hope to give you some tools to foster a deeper connection with students by first giving you the space to deeply connect with your own self.

Gilman Int'l Scholarship Workshop | Sept. 16 & 26

Augsburg Abroad, TRiO/SSS, & Multicultural Student Services invite Pell Grant Recipients to learn how you could be awarded up to $8,000 to study and/or intern abroad through the Gilman International Scholarship. This scholarship is open only to Pell Grant recipients who are also U.S. Citizens.

Attend one of the following workshops to learn the keys elements to winning this scholarship:

Writing Lab Opens Monday, 9/15

Get ready to visit the Writing Lab! Last year, tutors in the Writing Lab conducted well over 2,000 conferences with students on their writing assignments, and they are ready to start the new academic year. The lab, located on the street level of Lindell Library and just left of the circulation desk, will open for fall semester on Monday, September 15.

Here are the hours:

Monday: 11:10 a.m. - 1:40 p.m.; 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
Tuesday: 12:30 - 3:00 p.m.; 3:30 - 6:00 p.m.; 7:30 - 10 p.m.
Wednesday: 3:30 - 6:00 p.m.; 6:30 - 9 p.m.
Thursday: 12:30 - 3:00 p.m.; 3:30 - 6:00 p.m.; 7:30 - 10 p.m.
Friday: 4:30 - 7:00 p.m.

Register Your Fall Internship for Augsburg Exp.

If you have an internship this fall and would like to use it to fulfill your Augsburg Experience graduation requirement, remember to register your internship by September 16!

You have two options to register your internship:

- Option 1: Register for academic credit (2 or 4 credits) with a faculty supervisor which also fulfills the Augsburg Experience. For details on the academic internship registration process visit: http://www.augsburg.edu/strommen/internships/internship-registration/

- Option 2: Register for the non-credit internship option (AUG EX3) that fulfills the Augsburg Experience only. For details on the non-credit internship registration process visit: http://www.augsburg.edu/strommen/internships/non-credit-internships/

- Monday, September 15 at 10 a.m.

Campus Activities and Orientation offers free lockers to commuter students in the Science Hall. These lockers can be reserved for the entire academic year.

Admissions Looking for New Student Callers

Have you thought about finding a job on campus? Looking for something that is part-time with convenient evening hours? The Undergraduate Office of Admissions is looking to hire new student callers for the 2014-2015 academic year. Please check out the job description and requirements under Augsburg's Human Resources website. We are looking for students who are willing to share their insight into campus life and experiences with selecting a college. Also, there will be directed calling to students who have indicated interest in visiting campus, applying, and participating in certain programs. Listening Session with Penumbra Theatre Company

September 18, 3:40-5:00 p.m. Foss Studio

Students - Please join us for an important event that is devoted to listening to Augsburg students regarding issues of diversity and inclusion on campus. This session is a time for students to share what it feels like to be a student of color on campus, as well as for aspiring white student allies to share some of the difficulties and challenges they face in doing ally work here at Augsburg. This session is part of ongoing initiatives by the college aimed at addressing inclusiveness on campus. Penumbra Theatre Company brings expertise in using the arts to work toward social justice and will use this listening session to inform their artists and educators about the specific needs of our students. Your voices matter. Your stories matter. Please come and share so that we can make this campus a better learning environment for all.

Book Charging Ends Next Week, Tuesday September 16

Students may charge up to $600 in books and supplies at the Augsburg College Bookstore. Whatever amount is spent by the student will be billed to their student account. The last day to charge will be September 16. This includes any books needed for times 2 courses.

Any charges made BEFORE September 16 will be billed to the student account. Any purchases made AFTER that date will be an out of pocket expense to the student.

Annual ABO Outing to Target Field - Next Tuesday

With the start of the school year, it's time for the annual ABO (The Augsburg Business Organization) group outing to see the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday, September 16 at 7 p.m. Come see the Twins take on the Detroit Tigers, meet some fellow Augsburg Business Students and get a chance to cheer on the Twins as they play some outdoor baseball! Get up close to the action, take a break from studying and join us at Target Field

Tickets for our great seating in the first 3 rows of the Right Field Overlook are only $5 for Augsburg Students. Students may also buy one ticket for a non-Augsburg guest for $12 each. ABO events are open to all majors (Day, WEC, MBA, AU) so bring your friends, roommates, etc. RSVP early to isaacson@augsburg.edu as we have a bit smaller group of tickets this fall.

Timekeeping Systems Workshops

With the new school year beginning, we have many new students, staff, and supervisors using the new timekeeping system.

We have set up several hands on workshops to go through the process of the new system.

The sessions are targeted to particular groups which are noted below with the list of days, times, and locations.

1. Wednesday, September 10, 10-11 a.m., Sverdrup 201 (students with jobs on campus)
2. Friday, September 12, 3-4 p.m., Sverdrup 201 (staff)
3. Monday, September 15, 9-10 a.m., Sverdrup 201 (supervisors)
4. Monday, September 15, 3-4 p.m., Sverdrup 201 (supervisors)

We will continue to have workshops for the payroll periods in September and October. If you miss these, look for future dates and times.

Apply by 9/22: Winter Study Abroad Scholarships

Four scholarships are available for winter break study abroad programs.

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION DEADLINE IS SEPTEMBER 22; award notifications will be made before the September 30 application deadline in order to facilitate better financial planning for program participants.

1) Mary Witt Scholarship: Awards based on financial need and commitment to grassroots/activism work.

2) Religious Studies Scholarship: Awards are for students majoring in Religion who also demonstrate financial need.

3) Students of Color Endowed Scholarship: For students affiliated with the American Indian, Hispanic/Latino, Pan Afrikan or Pan Asian support programs who also demonstrate financial need

Scholarships #1-#3 are offered by the Center for Global Education and can be applied to any winter break study abroad program. More information and an application can be found at:

4) Hoversten Peace Scholarship: For students who are interested in peace issues. Preference will be given to students with a 3.0+ GPA, demonstrated financial need, and an interest in peace or a personal outlook/career plan that shows promise of contributing to the cause of peace.

This scholarship applies to only two programs: Global Crossroads & Indigenous Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico AND Vocation & Christian Faith in El Savlador

A set of events have been put together by ALAS members in hopes of bringing awareness and education to others about the rich Latino culture held by a large population of Augsburg students.

Farewell Reception for Laura Forgey - Today

Please join us at a farewell reception for Laura Forgey, Augsburg Bookstore Manager, TODAY, September 12, 3-4:30 p.m., NOTE location change to Student Art Gallery, Christensen Center. Biology Alumnus to Give Talk - Friday

Dr. Thane Papke, an Augsburg Alumnus, will be giving a talk on Friday, September 12 at 3:15 in SCI 123.

Title: Haloferax volcanii, a model prokaryote for investigating everything that is interesting in biology from the origins of DNA, polyploidy, and sexual reproduction to multicellularity, cell differentiation and cooperation.

Dr. Papke is an Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular an Cellular Biology at the University of Connecticut in Storrs.
