Dr. Larson '77 Talks Oceanography Thursday 10:30
Dr. Norge Larson, Chief Science Executive Sea-Bird Scientific
"A Science Career in Oceanography-A Personal Story"
Date: September 11, 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Location: Marshall Room
Norge is a 1977 graduate of Augsburg College in physics. While at Augsburg he also worked with Dr. Ken Ericksen in the UM Space Physics program. Switching gears, he earned a PhD in 1988 from the School of Oceanography and Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington in Seattle. The lengthy graduate career included special projects developing instruments for the US Navy. That was the impetus to shift gears out of academia and accept a position in a young company, Sea-Bird Electronics, building scientific instruments for Oceanographers. The career path at Sea-Bird lead from part-time janitor and hydrodynamics problem-solver, to VP for Science, co-owner and President, developing instruments, calibration methods and a metrology laboratory along the way. In 2008 he sold Sea-Bird to Danaher Corporation, and continued as its president through 2013 while he helped Danaher purchase cohort oceanographic companies and assemble them into Sea-Bird Scientific. He is currently the company's Chief Science Executive, while pursuing a new venture in France. Seattle is home for him and his wife, Arlene Libby.
