General Announcements

New NSF Grant for Research on Eyewitness Errors

Dr. Nancy Steblay, Professor of Psychology, has been awarded funding from the National Science Foundation for the project, "Collaborative Research. RUI: Understanding and Predicting Eyewitness Identification Errors: Studies Using a Unique Set of Materials from Actual Lineups." (NSF ID: SES -1420135). Total funding for the project is $397,600. The research will be conducted over the next three years in collaboration with Dr. Gary Wells at Iowa State University. Augsburg College will receive $134,219 in support of faculty-student research.

To better understand eyewitness identification errors, the research team will conduct a series of laboratory experiments using eyewitness data sets and lineup audio files from 855 real police investigations. These experiments will test theoretical ideas that have direct implications for police practice regarding the prediction of eyewitness identification decisions from lineup bias, eyewitness verbalizations during the lineup, witness confidence statements, and witness decision latency. Differences between double-blind and single-blind lineups will be examined for evidence of suggestive lineup administrator behaviors and influence on eyewitness decisions. The investigators will also examine the role of contextual factors on how people evaluate witness certainty statements and how contextual factors might affect people's perceptions of lineup administrator influence.

The results of this research will help address questions about external generalization of lab-based theory and serve as a model for collecting and analyzing materials and data from actual lineups in the field. Additionally, this project will provide hands-on research experience for up to 18 Augsburg undergraduate students.

If you have any questions about this research or would like to learn more, please contact Nancy Steblay at steblay@augsburg.edu. If you'd like to learn about other research activities on campus, please view the sponsored programs website at http://inside.augsburg.edu/grants/category/awards/.

Chemistry Professor to Collaborate on DOE Research

Dr. David Hanson, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, is collaborating with Dr. Jeffrey Pierce at Colorado State University to develop computer models that will improve the representation of growth rates of newly formed atmospheric particulate matter. This research, "Collaborative Project: Contributions of Organic Compounds to the Growth of Freshly Nucleated Atmospheric Nanoparticles" is made possible by a $485,434 grant through the Department of Energy (Award # DE-SC0011780).

By synthesizing research data from new laboratory experiments as well past observations, the research team will establish an understanding of the mechanisms of nanoparticle growth due to organic compounds and a semi-empirical representation for size-resolved growth rates. These results will then be integrated to regional and climate models to assess the role of new particle formation on climate.

Over the next three years, the college will receive $79,705 to support Dr. Hanson's research activities. Additionally, this project will provide hands on research training for an undergraduate student.

If you would like to learn more about Dr. Hanson's research, please visit http://web.augsburg.edu/~hansondr/ or contact him at hansondr@augsburg.edu. If you'd like to learn about other research activities on campus, please view the sponsored programs website at http://inside.augsburg.edu/grants/category/awards/.

New NSF Award for Collaborative Space Research

The National Science Foundation recently awarded Dr. Mark Engebretson, Professor Emeritus of Physics, and his team $396,635 over three years to support the project, "Collaborative Research: Studies of ULF Waves Associated with Solar Wind Coupling to the Magnetosphere and Ionosphere." (NSF ID: PLR-1341493)

In collaboration with Dr. Marc Lessard at the University of New Hampshire, Dr. Engebretson will continue to operate and analyze data from four ground-based induction magnetometers located in Antarctica (including South Pole Station) and two in the Arctic. The stations in this project are key links in arrays of ground-based ionospheric and magnetospheric observatories in both the Arctic and Antarctic regions. These observatories, together with both low-altitude and high-altitude NASA satellites, provide the data with which Engebretson, Lessard, and members of their team work to characterize and understand the physical processes occurring in Earth's space environment.

The study of the Earth's space environment has become increasingly important to our technologically–driven society. This research aims to better understand geospace phenomena, including solar wind–magnetosphere interactions and geomagnetic storms and substorms, in an effort to improve the capability to forecast and characterize major space weather events. Such events can cause dropouts in electronic communications, degrade the accuracy of GPS systems, temporarily or permanently disable satellites, and even cause damage to the electrical power grid.

This project will support research training for up to six Augsburg undergraduate students over the project period.

If you have any questions about this research or would like to learn more, please contact Dr. Engebretson at engebret@augsburg.edu. If you'd like to learn about other research activities on campus, please view the sponsored programs website at http://inside.augsburg.edu/grants/category/awards/.

2014-2015 Work Study Information

Work Study Information!

The 2014 fall semester is fast approaching! If you are a hiring manager, please be sure to review the information below regarding student positions for the 2014-2015 academic year. As many of you know, the state minimum wage is now $8.00. In response to this new regulation, Augsburg College has changed the wage structure for student employees to be in line with the new minimum wage law.

The 2014 – 2015 academic student rates will be as follows:
New Student Rate: $8.15
Returning Student Rate: $8.50
Technical Rate: $9.00 (starting, max $9.50)

Steps to follow when hiring a student worker for the 2014-2015 Academic Year
1. Students who are returning into a position they held previously will only need to fill out the Student Employment Hire form. This form is located on the Human Resources (HR) Moodle site.
2. Looking for a student worker to hire? Any new position will need to be posted on the Human Resources website. Fill out the Student Employment Posting Request form located on the HR Moodle site, return the form to HR, and we will post the position. Applications will be forwarded to the Hiring Manager for review.
3. Once a student is hired, the Hiring Manager will fill out the Student Employment Hire form and submit it to the HR office. Students who have never worked on campus before will need to fill out additional HR forms, including a background check.

Priority for federal and state work study eligibility
As in previous years, students who are federal or state work study eligible, as well as international students, will be given priority through the end of October in hiring. After this time, all students may apply for student worker positions.

New timekeeping system - Kronos
Students will be entered into Kronos once we receive all their paperwork in HR. Look for hands on workshops to attend in September and October. We will be posting information through A-Mail on these workshops.
