Confidential Document Destruction

For those departments on campus that have been collecting confidential documents that need shredding, now is the time to place a facilities work request to have your materials picked up for storage in a secure location until the shredding truck comes later in October. Please place your request by October 15 so we have time to do all the pick-ups. If you have questions about what needs shredding and what is normal recycling, please consult your manager.

RACE Workshop with Penumbra Theatre

Faculty and Staff - You are invited to participate in Penumbra Theatre Company's RACE Workshop. As part of Augsburg's commitment to being a welcoming place for all, this workshop is designed to continue the work of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee as well as build upon the momentum generated through the Creating an Inclusive Campus Conference. During this two-hour session, you will participate in a variety of activities that facilitate the exploration of your identity and the examination how your sense of self affects your perception of others. Monologues by Penumbra's performance artists will help us hone in on the things that nurture or hinder human connection. By participating in this workshop, we hope to give you some tools to foster a deeper connection with students by first giving you the space to deeply connect with your own self.

Urban Plunge

Come to a fantastic training on October 4 from 1-5:10 p.m. put on by Urban Plunge to explore the problems and opportunities of our urban environment.

Urban Plunge is an experience designed to show gifts and challenges about Augsburg's urban setting through a lens of faith, specifically the Sermon On The Mount (Matthew 1:1-16). Some of these challenges are: poverty, hunger, homelessness, and racism; we also explore our gifts: interfaith dialogue, public faith, and what we can do about the challenges. We want to give this experience to youth groups from the metro and greater Minnesota area. This training is meant so that you will be able to be an Urban Plunge guide for the youth in their experience. If you need any more incentive, Afro Deli will be served after this training. Writing Lab Is Now Open for Fall Term

Last year, tutors in the Writing Lab conducted well over 2,000 conferences with students on their writing assignments, and the Lab is now open and wonderful writing tutors are ready to start the new academic year. The lab is located on the street level of Lindell Library, just left of the circulation desk. No appointments are taken/needed. Just show up.

Einsteins is open from 7:30 a.m. - 9:00 p.m., with the late night menu starting at 7:00 p.m.

The Commons is open from 7:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Market Place is Yucatan pork, avocado topping, poblano corn pudding, and Lyonnais potato. Vege is serving lime cilantro white rice, roasted cauliflower with raisins, tater tots, and scalloped potatoes.

Special Education Advisory Panel

Christine Peper has been appointed to serve on the Special Education Advisory Panel. Advisory members participate in supporting special education legislation to ensure that the state and federal laws protecting the rights of people with disabilities remain strong. This is a highly prestigious appointment. Only 2 representatives from Institutions of Higher Education across the state are asked to serve. She was appointed by the Governor and will be approved by the State Commissioner this week when she begins her tenure.

Melodie Lane and Athletics Cheer On the CSBR

Melodie Lane '14 MAL joined the Augsburg staff less than five years ago, but her team spirit makes it seem as if she's been here much longer. She is both a generous donor to the Center for Science, Business, and Religion and a CSBR campaign cheerleader through and through.

"There are times when I'm the face of Augsburg in the athletics office. But then, we're all the face of Augsburg," says Lane, who currently serves as athletics business manager/program coordinator and also coordinates the A-Club.

Her journey here covered several of her many interests. She taught elementary school, managed theater productions, became a real estate appraiser, and ran an appraisal business in Texas before following her brother-in-law, then an assistant football coach, and sister, who previously worked in the athletics department, to the inner-city campus.

"I think Jeff [Swenson '79, Athletic Director] knew we had a good work ethic in our family when he called, and I was looking for a change," says Lane, who began as an over-qualified administrative assistant but happily pursues new responsibilities. "The reason why I'm still here is not so much the job I do--everyone wants to do meaningful work, and sometimes secretarial things just need to be done. It's something about all the people here, the mission of the college, and the mission of the athletic department that makes you feel you're part of the team. And that makes you want to stay."

Lane didn't hesitate when Swenson challenged his department to give the CSBR their full support. "I would say we mirror his passion and his commitment to the college being the best it can be. I believe the CSBR is the next big step for our entire campus," she says. "I'm not a science or a business major, so it doesn't connect for me in that way. It's more about the college as a whole and what we can accomplish together as servant-leaders in the world."

Lane is now an official Auggie, having finished her master's degree in leadership in May. She is excited about collaborating with Athletic Department Chaplain Mike Matson '07 on an authentic leadership project. She also manages to pursue her photography, gift, and card business in her spare time.

"I keep doing things I love. That's just who I am," she says. "I feel like I've been blessed in so many ways, over and over--not just my job, but my master's degree, the people I work with, the entire Auggie family. So I want to give back, to carry this forward so that those who follow and want a great education can have it."

Lane is convinced that the CSBR will attract more students. "I really do believe Augsburg is a diamond in the rough. We're the middle-of-the-city school, probably the most diverse in the metro area. But we keep surprising people, and we don't settle for mediocrity."

She cites last year's new field turf and this year's "amazing scoreboard," dedicated to the late Edor Nelson, as examples of striving for excellence. "The CSBR campaign brings us closer and closer to that every day," she adds. "We are not a school that has large endowments. We work hard for our success, and when things turn out, we're proud of it. We really are determined to be the best we can be."

Fall 2014 All Hands meeting - Tuesday, Sept. 23

All members of the campus community are invited to attend the Fall 2014 All Hands meeting, Tuesday, Sept. 23, 11:30 a.m. in Hoversten Chapel.

We are not altering the class schedule on Sept. 23 for the All Hands meeting. The plan is to start the meeting promptly at 11:30 a.m. and have President Pribbenow conclude his remarks before those with noon classes need to depart.

We will post an audio recording of the full meeting--including any questions and discussion--for those interested in listening at a later date. Access to connect to the meeting from off-site locations will be available. Look for information in future A-mail posts for details about remote connection.

Google Engineer Acosta '04 Tells His Story on 9/26

"From Augsburg to Google: An Alum Shares His Story"

Victor is this year's recipient of the Augsburg First Decade Alumni Award for his accomplishments and his involvement within the Augsburg community. In the spring of his first year at Augsburg, Victor joined the Augsburg Molecular Beam Epitaxy team with Dr. Ambrose Wolf, re-engineering the Ultra High Vacuum Chamber. While he continued to work in Dr. Wolf's lab throughout his undergraduate career, Victor was also selected to participate in two prestigious off campus summer experiences: a research internship at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in 2002, and one at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in 2003. After graduating, Victor went on to pursue his doctorate in solid-state physics at the University of California-Berkeley, followed by a post-doc at HP, and now works for Google X as a engineer. Come hear about his personal journey from Augsburg to Google!

Our team is here to support you throughout your project, from meeting with you to develop an initial idea and goals, to setting up a communication timeline and creating messaging for your audience. Most project leaders spend approximately 2-4 hours per week on their fundraising projects between now and November 13. We are here to help you every step of the way!

Our goal is to meet with all interested and potential leaders to discuss their projects by Sept 20th in order to ensure we get a jump start on assisting all teams on creating the most successful fundraising project possible.

Student Listening Session with Penumbra Theatre

Students - Please join us for an important event that is devoted to listening to Augsburg students regarding issues of diversity and inclusion on campus. This session is a time for students to share what it feels like to be a student of color on campus, as well as for aspiring white student allies to share some of the difficulties and challenges they face in doing ally work here at Augsburg. This session is part of ongoing initiatives by the college aimed at addressing inclusiveness on campus. Penumbra Theatre Company brings expertise in using the arts to work towards social justice and will use this listening session to inform their artists and educators about the specific needs of our students. Your voices matter. Your stories matter. Please come and share so that we can make this campus a better learning environment for all.

Augsburg Theater Department Auditions: Egg

The Augsburg Theater Arts Department will hold auditions for the student directed production, Egg, by Mark Steven Jensen, directed by Mawrgyn
Roper. An audition sign-up sheet is posted on the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater door
in the atrium of Foss Center.

Theater Auditions:
Monday, September 22nd from 6:00p-9:30p
Tuesday from September 23rd from 6:00p-9:30p
There will be no callbacks!

Casting: 2 female roles; 1 egg (of any gender)

Description of Egg: Bertha and Louise are wandering in an empty wasteland when
they both spot an egg at the same time. Bertha wants to turn the egg into an
omelet; Louise wants to paint the egg for Easter. They each try to convince the
other to give up dibs on the egg. The debate turns more and more violent and
events spiral out of control. The production will use highly physical
performance techniques with puppetry and clowning to tell the story of two
women and an egg.

Sign up for a slot on the theater door in the
Foss Atrium and prepare a short piece of your choice (poem, lyrics, lines from
a play, etc.) that incorporates movement. Your audition piece should be
no longer than two minutes. The goal is to see you move with words. Try to tell
a story with your body and the text. Don't overthink it! All ideas are right.

Copies of Egg are on the theater
desk in the Campus Ministry suite (Foss 104). It is recommended that you read
the entire play in order to have a sense of tone in the piece and the nature of
the characters, which may help generate ideas for your audition piece.

Rehearsals will begin Monday, October 6th.
Performance dates are Friday, November 14th
through Sunday, November 16th.

Personal Document Destruction Event

Faculty, staff and students are welcome to bring their personal confidential documents that need to be shredded to a Shred Event sponsored by Augsburg Facilities Management. Bring your material (2 boxes or bags maximum, please) to the Shred Right truck parked between Sverdrup and Lindell Library on Wednesday, October 22, between 8:30-9:30 a.m. You must present your documents at this time; I am sorry we cannot offer early pick-up and storage of your personal documents. If you are not available at this time, it is your choice if you wish to entrust one of your co-workers to bring the documents to the truck for you. An Augsburg ID will be required, as we unfortunately cannot make this a community event.

I am giving you plenty of notice so that you can gather your materials, and perhaps use this event as an incentive to clean out your personal records! We can't give advice about what records you can destroy, but do your own research to figure out how to get rid of some of that old stuff in your home desk or file cabinet!
