Volunteer with Campus Kitchen This Year

Campus Kitchen is looking for volunteers! Sign up for one shift or make a weekly commitment.

The Campus Kitchen at Augsburg College works to make healthy food accessible to all in and around the Cedar Riverside Neighborhood to provide for basic needs, service learning, leadership development, and genuine engagement between the college and the community.

Bring meals to the community! Serve a hot meal and enjoy a meal with community members:
Mondays-Thursdays 4-5 p.m. at Brian Coyle Community Center
Tuesdays 11:20-1:30 p.m. at Peace House Day Shelter
Fridays 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Ebenezer Tower Senior Apartments

Thursdays 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Package and deliver cold meals to seniors in South Mpls

Saturdays 12-2 p.m. Glean vegetables from Mill City Farmers Market and distribute in Cedar-Riverside

Open the Campus Cupboard Food Shelf (need consistent volunteers)
Tuesdays 12-4 p.m.
Wednesdays 1:30-4 p.m.
Fridays 2:30-5 p.m.
Any student is welcome to use the food shelf when volunteers have it open or by contacting Campus Kitchen

The Rev. Mark Hanson Named Distinguished Fellow

As announced in email August 29 by President Pribbenow:

I am pleased to announce that The Rev. Mark Hanson will join Augsburg College this fall as a Distinguished Fellow in the Christensen Center for Vocation, working with colleagues in the Center and across campus to advance the College's commitment to vocational discernment—one of the four core commitments named in the Augsburg2019 strategic plan.

In this role, Mark will serve as counsel to the President's Office on interfaith and peace initiatives and continue his international efforts on interfaith dialogue as it relates to peacemaking. In partnership with ELCA church-wide staff, he will also launch a national initiative to convene interfaith leaders from all 26 ELCA colleges to ground our collective work in the distinctive educational experience we offer.

Rev. Hanson's connections to Augsburg run deep: He and his wife, Ione (Agrimson) Hanson, are 1968 alumni. Four of their six children attended Augsburg, and their daughter, Alyssa Hanson '01, is a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics, teaching in the adult undergraduate program. Given these connections, Mark truly understands how Augsburg, as a Lutheran college immersed in an urban setting, helps students explore what it means to live and serve in a radically changing world, and he has lived out this commitment throughout his distinguished career.

From 2001 to 2013, Rev. Hanson served as presiding bishop of the ELCA. During that time, he also served as president of the Lutheran World Federation. Prior to being elected as presiding bishop, Rev. Hanson was bishop of the St. Paul Area Synod and previously served as pastor of three Twin Cities congregations. During his career, he has served on numerous local and national boards and committees, including serving as an ex-officio member of the Augsburg Board of Regents from 1999 to 2001 and as president of the Augsburg College Alumni Association.

After earning a bachelor's degree in sociology, Rev. Hanson was a Rockefeller Fellow at Union Theological Seminary in New York, where he earned a master of divinity degree. He also attended Luther Seminary in St. Paul and was a Merrill Fellow at Harvard Divinity School. In 2002, Augsburg awarded him an honorary doctorate of humane letters; he also has received honorary degrees from the Academy of Ecumenical Indian Theology and Church Administration, Capital University, Grand View University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, North Park Seminary, Susquehanna University, Wartburg College, Wartburg Theological Seminary, and Wittenberg University.

This fall, Rev. Hanson will be honored during the September 26 Homecoming Convocation with an Augsburg College Distinguished Alumni Award, recognizing his commitment to Augsburg's distinctive work at the intersections of faith, learning and service. He is also scheduled to preach in Chapel on Thursday, September 25. I invite you attend those events to hear from Rev. Hanson and ask you to join me in welcoming him to our campus community later in the fall.

Augsburg College is a member of the Central Corridor Anchor Partnership, a group of healthcare and higher education institutions along the Central Corridor that are working to bring more prosperity to our neighborhoods. The Partnership has negotiated this special Try Transit Today deal with Metro Transit specifically for students and employees of its member institutions.

Coupons for new students are available during new student orientation, or in the Office of Student Affairs, Memorial 118. Redeem your coupon at the Enrollment Center – while supplies last!

Spots Available - Faculty and Staff Book Group

There are still a few spots available in the Pastrix book group. The group will be led by Martha E. Stortz, Bernhard M. Christensen Professor of Religion and Vocation.

The speaker for this fall's Bernhard M. Christensen Symposium will be Nadia Bolz-Weber, the pastor of House for All Sinners and Saints in Denver, Colo., and author of the blog SarcasticLutheran.com. The Christensen Center for Vocation invites faculty and staff to participate in a series of discussions on her book, the New York Times Bestseller, Pastrix: The Cranky, Beautiful Faith of a Sinner & Saint.

The Pastrix Book Group will meet in Foss 175 from 4-5:30 p.m. on the following four Mondays:
September 8 and 22
October 6 and 20

Hi my name is Frankie, and I will be a student at Augsburg in the fall. I'm looking for students who want to make some money and gain job experience. I use a wheelchair and require assistance with daily living tasks. I'm looking to hire some personal care attendants (PCAs). The pay is $12.73 an hour.
