Outgoing Calls - Reminder
Friendly reminder for all faculty and staff: Outgoing calls from any extension on campus show up in caller ID as x1000, the switchboard. There have been a lot of confused callers trying to return a missed call, but we don't have a record of outgoing calls to be able to transfer them.
If you call someone from your campus extension, make sure to leave a message with your first AND last name and your direct line, so we can help these callers find their homes more effectively. Thanks!
Crime Alert: Robbery
Crime Alert July 16, 2014: Robbery
Public Safety was notified at 4:37 p.m. on July 15th of a robbery that occurred on the footbridge across I-94, south of Murphy Park. The victim was walking alone and was walking south across the footbridge when he was confronted by 3 male suspects. One suspect punched the victim twice in the head while the other 2 suspects pulled him to the ground. No weapons were reported. The suspects took items from the victim's pockets and took his backpack.
All 3 suspects are described as tall, thin African American males with medium complexion. One of the suspects wore a grey hoodie and another suspect wore a red baseball cap.
You Can Help Prevent Crime at Augsburg!
-Trust Your Instincts - If you sense trouble, get away
-Be Observant and Aware - Remain alert, be aware of your surroundings, observe the other people around you. Know who is around you. Be alert for suspicious behavior (e.g. a person wearing a long coat in the middle of summer, loitering, etc.)
-Walk Confidently and Do Not Make Yourself a Target - Robbers are looking for an easy target. Keep your head up and eyes alert and walk at a steady pace. Do not walk while looking at you phone and avoid carrying lots of packages or other belongings.
-If You are Robbed - Stay calm and remember: safety first! Follow the robber's directions, but do not volunteer more than asked for. If you have to move, tell the robber what you are doing and why. Try to get a good look at the robber so you can describe him/her later. Give the robber time to leave and note the direction he/she travels.
-After a Robbery - CALL DPS OR THE POLICE IMMEDIATELY. Avoid touching anything the robber has touched. Try to recall as you can about the robber including speech and mannerisms.
-Notify DPS of any suspicious activity right away

Taking a course this summer? The wonderful writing tutors can help! Regular summer hours in the Writing Lab have now resumed and will continue through Thursday, August 21. Again, summer hours are Mondays and Thursdays, 4:30-7 p.m.
The Lab is located in Lindell Library, street level, just left of the circulation desk. Tutors are on duty to help Augsburg students at any stage of their writing process.

Finally - Welcome to Baby Comer
Ethan Mark Comer arrived Tuesday, July 15 at 7:15 a.m. weighing 8 pounds 2 ounces and measuring 20 3/4 inches. "He has a mess of dark hair and is the most precious gift in the whole wide world!" says his mother.
Baby Ethan and Crystal, the new mother, are doing well.
Concordia Language Village Employment Opportunities '14-15
Concordia Language Villages has 2014-15 employment opportunities for Spanish Teachers. These are part-time, in the Twin Cities metro area, for Language and Cultural Immersion, and Programs for Preschool and Elementary. They have multiple classes/programs in preschool enrichment, and before and after school discovery programs. You may apply for individual programs or combine multiple programs. Green Plate Club Challenge Starts July 16
Work toward your personal Health Goal by adding green vegetables to your plate! The Green Plate Club Challenge will help you keep pace with your peers as you eat more nutrient-rich, green vegetables. This challenge is a part of the Active Wellness program. It is open to ALL Faculty and Staff.
Interested in some friendly competition with your coworkers?
How to participate:
- Eat at least one serving of green vegetables five days each week for three weeks (15 total days)
- Record your participation at www.myinteractivehealth.com/MyHealthTools
- Use the Fruit and Veggie Tracker on the Challenge Dashboard or the Food Log to enter the vegetables you've eaten
For participants that completed a Biometric screening as a part of our Active Wellness Program, successful completion of the Green Plate Club Challenge will earn you 50 points towards reaching your personal Health Goal to be eligible for the 2015 incentive.

Staff Appreciation Event - Monday, July 21
Augsburg can be proud of the energy and creativity on display through its faculty and student research projects. None of this would be possible if it were not for the support of our entire campus community. We would like to say "Thank You!" to everyone from the custodial staff who keep our labs clean to campus security to HR. We are grateful for everyone's work to build a community that is small for our students but big for the world. ;)

McNair Scholars 2014 Summer Research Presentations
2014 McNair Summer Research Presentations
One component of the McNair Scholars Program is a 10-week summer research project. Each year students work with a faculty mentor on a specific topic, culminating in a final paper and presentation. In August students will be attending and presenting at the 22nd Annual McNair Scholars Symposium at the University of California-Berkeley. If you would like the opportunity to see these presentations at Augsburg, please join us this upcoming Tuesday, July 22, at 10 a.m. in Kennedy 303/305. MFA Summer Residency - Readings and Screenings
The MFA in Creative Writing 2014 Summer Residency will be held from Thursday, July 17 through Sunday, July 27. Please join us in welcoming our very talented students and acclaimed writers to campus for this festival of craft talks, workshops, evening readings and more. This summer's visitors include Pulitzer prize-winning science journalist Deborah Blum, playwright Kristoffer Diaz, poet/memoirist Alex Lemon, screenwriter Bill Wheeler, and author Pam Houston. They will be joining our own MFA mentors, Nicole Brending, Stephan Eirik Clark, Cass Dalglish, Jack El-Hai, Heid Erdrich, John Gaterud, Sarah Myers, Cary Waterman and Steven Wingate.
We invite you to join us for the evening readings/screenings and receptions, at which featured writers will be available to sign their works. All events begin at 7:30 p.m., and the public is invited.
