2014 URGO Summer Research Applications Available
Summer Research Opportunities!
Are you looking for a summer research opportunity? URGO applications for 2014 summer research are now available. All fields of study welcome!
Students must:
-Be a full-time Augsburg undergraduate
-Have completed at least one year of undergraduate study and have at least one semester of full-time study left
-Have a minimum GPA of a 3.0 (lower GPAs are considered on a case-by-case basis)
-Have not previously participated in URGO Summer Research or the NcNair Scholars Program
Research options:
Full-time: 400 hours of research = $4,000 stipend
Part-time: 200 hours of research = $2,000 stipend
Research Assistant: 100 hours of research = $1,000 stipend

CGE + HECUA Present at Curriculum Conference
Ann Lutterman Aguilar, director of the Center for Global Education's Mexico site, co-presented a session on November 19 at the Forum on Education Abroad's Standards of Good Practice Institute on Curriculum, Teaching and Education Abroad. The session, "Academic Coursework: Finding Roots and Sources in the Local Context" was co-presented with Sarah Pradt from HECUA about community learning strategies in education abroad.
$5,000 Scholarship for American Indian Students
$5,000 Scholarship for American Indian and Alaska Native students pursuing careers related to tribal policy and Native American health care
If you're committed to applying your education and training directly to solving problems in Indian Country and interested in being plugged into a growing network of American Indian student leaders across the country, check out the Udall Scholarship.
Scholarships are awarded to sophomore and junior college students in any of three categories:
- To American Indian and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy, including fields related to tribal government, law, education, justice, resource management, cultural preservation and revitalization, economic development, and other areas affecting American Indian communities; or
- To American Indian and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native American health care; or
- To students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment.

- Up to $5,000 for educational expenses

$30,000 to Help Fund Graduate Degree
Attention Juniors!
Are you interested in a career in public service?
Do you plan to attend graduate or professional school?
Could you use $30,000 to fund your education?
If so, you may be eligible for the Truman Scholarship, a merit-based grant awarded to undergraduate students who wish financial support to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government, the non-profit sector or elsewhere in public service. The Foundation seeks candidates who have extensive records of public and community service, are committed to careers in government or elsewhere in public service, and have outstanding leadership potential and communication skills.
Additional eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship and junior standing (or senior standing, but in the third year of college enrollment).

CGE + Sabo Center Host Workshop for International Educators
Two of Augsburg's Centers of Commitment, the Sabo Center for Citizenship and Learning and Center for Global Education (CGE), collaborated to host a pre-conference workshop for the CIEE Annual Conference in Minneapolis.
The session, "Intercultural Accommodation, Integration, or Assimilation? An Encounter and Exchange with Minneapolis' East African Immigrant Community," included a day-long immersion on the West Bank and at Augsburg.
Mary Laurel True, Director of Community Engagement led the workshop with the David Hamilton, Director, International Travel Seminars. Regina McGoff, Director, CGE helped plan the workshop with CIEE's International Faculty Development Seminar program. Twenty people participated in the day from institutions such as American University, Stanford University, the University of California-Davis, Southern Methodist University, CIEE, and the University of Minnesota.
Augsburg Experience Info Sessions
Have you completed your Augsburg Experience graduation requirement? If not, this is a great opportunity to learn about your options to complete this requirement and select one that helps you apply your academics and enhance your experience at Augsburg. The options we will review include:
Faculty/Student research
Internships (for-credit or non-credit)
Study Abroad
Service learning (course based or individual)
During the information sessions you will learn more about your options for the Augsburg Experience and the steps you need to take to register or complete each of the options. There will also be time to have your individual questions answered. You can attend any of the 20 minute information sessions offered on the following dates and times:
Monday, November 25 at 5:00 p.m.
Tuesday, December 3 at 2:30 p.m.
Information sessions will be located in the Strommen Center for Meaningful Work (Christensen Center, Suite 100). If you have any questions, contact Career & Internship Services at 612-330-1148.

Bookstore Charging Begins TODAY, Monday Nov. 25
Students can begin charging their books to their student accounts at the bookstore starting Monday, November 25. Students are authorized to charge up to $600 for necessary books and supplies. All purchases will be billed to your student account after the last day to drop or add a course for the spring semester. Questions? Email Student Financial Services at studentfinances@augsburg.edu.
"On-Hold" Accounts Payable Checks
Authorization Invoices processed with a "On-Hold" request originally to be picked up on Friday, November 29 will be available on Wednesday, November 27 anytime after 1:00 p.m. because of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Young Adults in Global Mission - Tabling Today
A representative from the ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission will be tabling Monday, November 25 in the lobby of the Christensen Center from 10 a.m .-1 p.m.
Young Adults in Global Mission is a year long program that allows young adults ages 19-29 a chance to immerse themselves in a new culture, community, and lifestyle abroad. It's an opportunity for learning about yourself, your faith, and your place in the world. It brings up questions about social justice and equality and transforms how you see and live in the world around you. It is a year about growing in community and love with brothers and sisters as you learn from each other.

Campus Cupboard Donations Needed
Please consider making a donation of non-perishable food items to the Campus Cupboard, Augsburg's student food shelf. You can find collection bins at the Welcome Desk and Einstein's (in Christensen), the Campus Ministry/Theater Office (in Foss), and the Urn/Mort and Anderson dorm lobbies.
Right now, we are especially interested in stocking canned proteins (like tuna), canned fruit, canned pumpkin, and cereal. Other suggested donations include canned vegetables, canned beans, soup (canned or instant), peanut butter, jelly, rice, pasta, oatmeal, granola bars, and crackers.

Augsburg Among Top Colleges for Veterans
U.S. News & World Report released its inaugural Best Colleges for Veterans rankings last Monday, Nov. 11, 2013. Augsburg College was one of 234 ranked schools.
U.S. News developed the new rankings to help veterans pursue a college education under the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Schools reported on their veteran benefits as part of the broader survey and data collection of undergraduate schools by U.S. News during spring 2013.

Bibelnieks, Dvorak & Lutterman Present at Conference
Tracy Bibelnieks, Professor of Mathematics, Ann Lutterman-Aguilar, Director of the Center for Global Education's Mexico site, and Andrea Dvorak, Assistant Director and Faculty-Led Programs Manager, Augsburg Abroad, presented a session at CIEE's Annual Conference in Minneapolis on November 23.
Their session, "Essential Components for Integrating Study Abroad into the Curriculum of STEM and other Disciplinary Majors," highlighted an Augsburg mathematics program to Nicaragua, as well as other efforts to increase participation of STEM majors in study abroad.
