Public Safety and Facilities Announcements
Facilities Work Order Request
Please use the facilities online work order system for all work order requests, except emergencies. Emergencies include fire, water flooding, sparking, electrical outages, a hazardous situation on campus (icy steps, etc.). Call DPS at ext. 1717 (612-330-1717) for these emergencies. For ALL OTHER requests, please use the online system. These may include a light bulb out in the ceiling of your office, a broken sign on campus, spill on your carpet, broken window blind, etc. Report things in your work area, and anything you see while you are out and about on campus. We can all help keep the campus looking its best by reporting things we see.

-Select which campus, Minneapolis or Rochester
-Select the building
-Select the repair center: Custodial is anything related to cleaning or rest room supplies. Facilities is anything related to fixing buildings, building systems, or grounds.
-Area: Many areas on campus have rooms labeled with room numbers; use these to locate the repair center, if at all possible. Otherwise, select the area by the description.
-Request: please be as specific as you can. Your request may be one that can be handled by a facilities technician that works in the evening or is available when you are not, so be specific enough that your request can be completed without your in-person description.
You request will be reviewed by a facilities employee and assigned to a technician. Our goal is to complete your request within five work days. There are a few situations that may cause us to miss this goal: ordering parts, a higher than normal number of emergencies, etc. Contact me if you are having trouble with the online system. URGO Summer Research Applications Are Out
Are you looking for a summer research opportunity? Would you like to get paid to do research? URGO applications for 2014 summer research are now available. All fields of study welcome!
Students must:
-Be a full-time Augsburg undergraduate
-Have completed at least one year of undergraduate study and have at least one semester of full-time study left
-Have a minimum GPA of a 3.0 (lower GPAs are considered on a case-by-case basis)
-Have not previously participated in URGO Summer Research or the NcNair Scholars Program
Research options:
Full-time: 400 hours of research = $4,000 stipend
Part-time: 200 hours of research = $2,000 stipend
Research Assistant: 100 hours of research = $1,000 stipend

Writing Across the Curriculum Brainstorm
Monday, December 9, 6-8 p.m., in OGC 103
As finals week looms, all faculty are invited to gather to share strategies for (1) giving students helpful summative feedback and (2) dealing with the grading-related work load at the end of the term. Several faculty will be present to offer their own approaches and tips; attendees are welcome (but certainly not expected) to share their ideas as well.
This will be a very, very low-pressure, relaxed gathering with no experts -- "just" a group of generous colleagues. Plus, good pizza will provided. Therefore, please RSVP to Colin Irvine (irvinec@augsburg.edu) or to the submitter (above) of this here A-mail post.

$30,000 to Help Fund Graduate Degree
Attention Juniors!
Are you interested in a career in public service?
Do you plan to attend graduate or professional school?
Could you use $30,000 to fund your education?
If so, you may be eligible for the Truman Scholarship, a merit-based grant awarded to undergraduate students who wish financial support to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government, the non-profit sector or elsewhere in public service. The Foundation seeks candidates who have extensive records of public and community service, are committed to careers in government or elsewhere in public service, and have outstanding leadership potential and communication skills.
Additional eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship and junior standing (or senior standing, but in the third year of college enrollment).

$5,000 Scholarship for American Indian Students
$5,000 Scholarship for American Indian and Alaska Native students pursuing careers related to tribal policy and Native American health care
If you're committed to applying your education and training directly to solving problems in Indian Country and interested in being plugged into a growing network of American Indian student leaders across the country, check out the Udall Scholarship.
Scholarships are awarded to sophomore and junior college students in any of three categories:
- To American Indian and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy, including fields related to tribal government, law, education, justice, resource management, cultural preservation and revitalization, economic development, and other areas affecting American Indian communities; or
- To American Indian and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native American health care; or
- To students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment.

Nominations for Kemper Scholarship
Faculty and Staff are encouraged to submit nominations of outstanding FIRST YEAR students (only) for the Kemper Scholarship. Nominees will be invited to information sessions and guided in completing the application process. This prestigious opportunity includes significant scholarship support during the academic year and two paid summer internships after sophomore and junior years, one with a not for profit organization and one in a for profit organization. All majors are encouraged. Please send nominations to Kemper Coordinator, Diane Pike at pike@augsburg.edu no later than Friday December 6.

Help is available from the Writing Lab tutors as you near the end of the semester and due dates for your writing assignments loom. The Lab is located on the street level of Lindell Library, left of the circulation desk. Come early and visit often! Here are the hours through Dec. 18:

Tuesday: 12:30 - 3 p.m., 3:30 - 6 p.m., and 7:30 -10 p.m.

3M Foundation Sponsors Large Classroom in CSBR
The 3M Foundation has given Augsburg College $510,165 in support of the new Center for Science, Business, and Religion. The gift came in two ways. The initial $200,000 was an outright gift. The additional $310,165 came as a 3:1 match for gifts given by 3M employees and retirees for Augsburg's new CSBR.
These combined gifts will provide a large first-floor classroom in the CSBR. A plaque will signal the significant investment from this Fortune 500 company with headquarters in Minnesota.

Velkommen Jul - Friday, December 6
Velkommen Jul is an annual celebration at Augsburg, presented by the Augsburg Associates, to welcome the Advent and Christmas seasons. It provides an opportunity for alumni, friends, faculty, students and the greater Augsburg community to come together and celebrate the Scandinavian heritage on which Augsburg was founded. The celebration begins at 10:40 a.m. with an Advent worship service in Hoversten Chapel followed by a reception and boutique in Christensen Center at 11:00. You may find that perfect Christmas present at the boutique and there will be goodies galore at the bake sale. On second floor of Christensen, in the Commons, you'll find many beautiful ladies dressed in traditional bunads waiting to serve you their delicious treats. Augsburg Associates Report Having "Too Much Fun" While Raising Significant Support for Scholarships
Augsburg Associates, 90 members strong, serve the college and the people they assist by hosting estate sales. According to Lennore Bevis '66, president of the Associates: "We serve the larger community by being very respectful of the people for whom we conduct sales--of their homes, and of their belongings, and by conducting sales in a positive, friendly, caring way."

CGE Wins National Award for SWK Program in Mexico
The NASPA (Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education) has honored Augsburg College's Center for Global Education (CGE) with the 2014 Award for Best Practices in International Education. The Best Practices in International Education Award recognizes domestic and international colleagues and institutions for exceptional work related to international higher education.
Augsburg's CGE won the International Exchange Award for its exceptional work on its "Social Work in a Latin American Context" program for its promoting global competency and cultural exchange via campus sponsored travel and/or hosted family initiatives.
The Social Work in a Latin American Context program was jointly created in 2003 by a collaboration of CSWE-accredited social work programs in the Minnesota/South Dakota area. The program satisfies the curriculum requirements for the BSW degree and is in accord with CSWE accreditation standards.
The mission of the program is to develop cross-culturally competent, ethical social work professionals with a global perspective by providing a semester of transformative, experiential learning focused on social and economic justice. You will learn from local social workers and community leaders. The program also includes an exchange with Mexican students of social work.
