The Scripps Research Institute is a national leader in research covering a wide range of fields. Students and faculty in the following fields are encouraged to attend:
- Engineering
- Mathematics
- Chemistry
- Computer Science
- Biology
- Physics
- Biopsychology

In particular, Scripps has established a lengthy track record of major contributions to the betterment of health and the human condition. The institute has become internationally recognized for its research into immunology, molecular and cellular biology, chemistry, neurosciences, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular diseases, virology, and synthetic vaccine development. Scripps Research Institute faculty includes three Nobel laureates and numerous members of the National Academy of Sciences (including its Institute of Medicine), American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and American Association for the Advancement of Science. Employee Training: Register Today

"Civil Discourse: Strategies for Communicating in a Diverse Workplace."

Don't miss your chance to take part in this development opportunity. This course will provide participants a valuable set of tools as we learn to communicate across our diverse workplace.

The sessions are open to all faculty and staff at no cost, with four opportunities to participate in this course. The sessions will be facilitated by Jeffrey Cookson, Organizational Development Manager and Global Diversity Inclusion Specialist from MRA Trusight.

The training will cover the following aspects of communication:
- Differing definitions of respect
- Common communication break-downs
- Characteristics of tactful and diplomatic communicators
- A self-assessment of various communication styles
- Tips for adjusting one's own style of communication
- A communication Action Plan for use during times of difficult or problematic communication

Advising Resources in Inside Augsburg

Recently, you may have noticed an additional option in Inside Augsburg. The new "button" is called "Advising Tools". You'll find it located in the gray bar area under Augnet Services.

"Advising Tools" is the first implementation phase of a software suite designed to support you in degree planning. In "Advising tools", you can schedule an appointment with your staff advisor. Now is the perfect time to try out this new scheduling software. If you'd like to meet with your staff advisor in preparation for your faculty advising meeting and spring term registration, make your appointment through "Advising tools". To do this:

1. Log into AugNet Services at http://augnet.augsburg.edu/
2. Click on "Advising Resources"
3. Click on "Meet with my staff advisor".
4. Once you are in the scheduling center, click on the first button "Schedule a new appointment".
5. Choose your staff advisor's name under "select an advisor to view availability" and pick the time that works for you.

The next phase of this tool is the degree planning software. This allows you to map out your degree plan and try out different major/minor combinations.

Study Education and Psychology in Slovenia

Examine the roots of both educational and psychological practices that shaped European culture, experience Roman ruins in Croatia, and the canals of Venice, Italy! A faculty-led study abroad program to Europe is tentatively scheduled for May 10-25, 2014. Earn two college class credits (one Education course and one Psychology elective) while traveling with your classmates and learning about other cultures and systems of education.

The application deadline for the program is January 31, 2014. If you are interested in applying, the first step is to attend an Info Session in the Augsburg Abroad office, in the lower level of Christensen Center.

Spring Book Orders

The bookstore is requesting book orders or adoptions by Nov. 15, 2013. Please use the new Faculty Enlight website to order your books and experience the benefits it has to offer you!

The Faculty Enlight website gives you the option to research and adopt materials in one convenient place. You are able to compare cost and identify format availability before adopting a book, also read peer reviews and write your own. It allows you to access your past adoptions and order your desk copies. Since this is a new platform for faculty, we welcome feedback on improvements and changes. All registered faculty submitting their adoptions will be entered into a drawing for a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card. The drawing will be held on Nov. 16! Note the website will be open for Spring book orders on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

Strommen Center is Hiring a Career Assistant

The Strommen Center for Meaningful Work (Career & Internship Services) is seeking to hire a Career Assistant. Career Assistants serve as the "face" to our center. You will greet students and alumni as well as schedule appointments for our professional staff. Career Assistants also assist students with basic questions about programs and events, job and internship searches and resources, and web resources. Lastly, Career Assistants serve as project assistants on a variety of projects related to internships, programming, marketing, or website development. Minneapolis-Cuernavaca 5th Anniversary Celebration

You're invited to the 5th Anniversary Celebration and Fundraiser for the Minneapolis-Cuernavaca Sister City Association (MCSCA) on Friday, October 11, 6-9 p.m. at the Historic Alfred Pillsbury House, home of Melissa and Uri Camarena. The event will include a photography exhibit by Michael Dvorak and Shiraz Mukarram, a silent auction, and refreshments.

Trip To Mille Lacs Reservation

On October 12

Enjoy a joint trip with St. Thomas students to the Mille Lacs Community and the Mille Lacs Indian Museum on the shores of beautiful Lake Mille Lacs. Learn more about one of our neighboring Ojibwe Anishinabe communities, their history, and culture. Our day will include a tour of the community and government center, a visit to the Museum and Trading Post, and a brief stop at the Casino

Schedule:

9:00 meet at Augsburg in front of Melby Hall (Rec. center)

9:15 Leave Minneapolis

Lunch (brown bag) You will need to pack yourself a lunch and snacks for the day. You can also purchase lunch at Subway near Mille Lacs

10 piece, Golden Oak contemporary dining room set. Included are a china cabinet; 18" D x 77" H x 63 " W. Table is 60" L x 42" W. TWO 25" table leaves. 6 upholstered side chairs. The china cabinet has 4 glass doors above with glass shelves, mirrored back, and is illuminated. Below are 4 doors with wooden shelves inside and a pullout drawer for linens.
