TFAPS -- Hybrid Learning Implementation

All faculty are invited to participate in two workshops offered by CTL and IT to support weekend and graduate faculty who are creating "hybrid" courses for 2013-14. If you are satisfied with the basic design of your courses, you only need to participate in the Moodle Labs to learn best practices for online learning and how to meet GAAC/AAC requirements for hybrid learning.

If you would like to improve the underlying design of your courses, you will also benefit from the integrated course design workshop.

Prerequisite: Please watch the screencasts in the Overview section of the Course Design Support Site (http://go.augsburg.edu/moodlelab) before coming to these sessions.

Integrated Course Design for Hybrid Learning.

It addresses how to choose face-to-face and online activities to create an engaged learning community, provide direct instruction, and facilitate active, collaborative learning. CTL Summer Scholarship Grants

Applications due March 15
Applications should be submitted online at http://inside.augsburg.edu/ctl/grant-applications/

The purpose of the Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants and the Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants is to support well-defined faculty scholarship projects. The expectation is that receipt of the grant will make it possible for faculty to accelerate completion of a significant project.

Two $4,000 Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2013. All tenured or tenure-track, full-time faculty who are in at least the second year of their contract are eligible to apply.

Three $2,000 Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2013. All full-time faculty are eligible to apply; priority is given to tenure-track faculty who have not received this grant in the previous three years.

Please complete the online Summer Scholarship application form (available at http://inside.augsburg.edu/ctl/grant-applications/) describing the project, explaining its potential significance, summarizing the work already accomplished, providing a timetable and plan for completion, explaining how it will accelerate project completion, and describing how it fits with your department's definition of scholarship. Submit a curriculum vitae (PDF document, please) as an email attachment to ctl@augsburg.edu. Applications should be submitted no later than March 15, 2013.

Applications will be reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee, and awards will be announced in early April. All grant recipients must submit a progress report by September 1, 2013. Recipients of the Dean's Scholarship Grant must submit a short final report by February 1, 2014.

Spring Break and Easter Break Hours in the Writing Lab

The WL will maintain its regular hours through Friday, March 15, before spring break and resume its schedule on Sunday, March 24. During the week of spring break, hours will be curtailed in accordance with the library schedule. Here is the schedule for the week of spring break:

Friday, March 15: 4:30 - 7 p.m.

Tuesday and Thursday, March 19 and 21: 6 - 9 p.m.

Sunday, March 24: 5 - 8 p.m.

For the Easter break, the WL will maintain regular hours through 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 28. The Lab will be closed on Good Friday, March 29, and Easter Sunday, March 31. Regular hours will resume on Monday, April 1.

Cap and Gown Information

Graduating in May?

The deadline has passed to order online - If you ordered online, you may pick up your cap and gown on April 9 or any time afterward until graduation.
If your gown was not reserved by March 7, a $15.00 late charge will be added to the final cost of your cap and gown. You may stop in the bookstore to purchase your cap and gown on April 9 up until graduation. If you need special sizing, please contact me ASAP.

All May graduation regalia will be in the store ready to purchase on April 9!

Summer or Semester Internships Abroad

The Center for Global Education (CGE) has a wealth of internship opportunities available for credit in a variety of disciplines in our programs in Mexico and Southern Africa. Internships can be done in the summer, fall or spring semester. In an increasingly globalized world, an international internship is one of students' strongest assets when pursuing future employment. Internships are part-time and complemented by other coursework, language classes when applicable, and other program activities such as excursions and speakers. CGE is Augsburg College's own study abroad program provider, with Augsburg College facilities, faculty, and staff abroad.

If you are interested in studying abroad - and an internship! - in summer or Fall 2013, the deadline for applications is March 15. Contact Augsburg Abroad for more information on the application process. Gloria Xinico of CGE (xinicog@augsburg.edu) can answer any specific program questions as well.

In Mexico, students can earn credit for an internship in business, environmental studies, history, interdisciplinary studies, marketing, political science, religion, Spanish, women's studies or youth & family ministries. Students have worked with educational programs, health care entities, indigenous rights groups, and women's organizations. Former students have also been able to conduct internships in an international firm that provides consulting in the areas of development finance and corporate social responsibility.

In Southern Africa (a program that takes place in both Namibia and South Africa), students can participate in an internship to earn credit in Political Science, History, or Interdisciplinary Studies. Internship placements. Students have interned at organizations related to mass media/journalism, youth and family development, HIV/AIDS education, environmental conservation, and microfinance, among others.

Nominate Someone for $1,000 Courageous Woman Award

Do you know a woman who courageously strives for social justice and peace on campus or in the wider community? Someone who sees injustice and acts on it? Someone who raises her voice to champion women? If so, then nominate her for a Courageous Woman Award.

Award recipients are selected from a pool of nominations and receive a prize of $1,000. Anyone may propose a nominee but each individual may nominate only one woman per year. Eligible for nomination are women in the Augsburg student body, faculty, and staff as well as women from the Cedar Riverside neighborhood and the broader Twin Cities community. Spring WEC buy back will be March 22 -23. You must have your Augsburg ID to sell back your book.

Spring WEC Rentals are due on March 25, Please take your rentals up to the cash register to check-in. Please do not sell back your rentals - doing so will result in your credit card being charge for the full amount. If you are unsure if you rented, look at your receipt or invoice. Rentals that are sold back to us cannot be reversed. You also may ship your rental back to us free for check-in. Please visit our website, scroll to the bottom and click on rental returns. Follow the directions. We also accept rentals via US post office - Our address is 610 22nd Ave. South, Minneapolis, MN 55454. If this is the route you wish to go, please include your name and phone number with the books. If you are taking a full semester class, those rentals are due May 3.

Paid Environmental Education Internship

The Dodge Nature Center is a non-profit organization operating a 320 acre nature preserve within the city of West Saint Paul that provides environmental education and outdoor experiences for thousands of people each year, primarily K-8th grade students.

Responsibilities of the Environmental Education Intern include:
• Plan and teach summer day camp programs
• Present environmental education units to various audiences
• Prepare instructional materials for environmental education program units and day camps
• Provide daily care for the reptile and amphibian collection
• Assist with seasonal projects

Qualifications:
• Knowledge and interest in natural history and environmental education
• Enthusiasm for working with children in an outdoor setting
• 2+ years of college coursework in environmental studies, education, sciences, or a related field
• Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
• Satisfactory result of a background check

The position runs from June 6 to August 15, 2013. Applicant must be available 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

This year's Zyzzogeton Research Symposium will take place on April 19 from 2-4 p.m. in Oren Gateway Center. Zyzzogeton is an opportunity for students to present a poster on research that they have conducted during the past year. Talk with your faculty advisor if you would like to present this year!

BIOGRAPHY: Olivia Olivares was born in California. She is Associate Professor of Learning Resources Services at Saint Cloud State University, a position she has held since 2007. At SCSU, she works primarily with students and faculty of the Herberger Business School. She has earned Bachelor's degrees in History and Political Science from Northern Arizona University and a Master of Arts in Library and Information Science from the University of Arizona. Professor Olivares is the President of the Minnesota Network of Latinos in Higher Education, and writes on issues related to library instruction and education.

Rising juniors and seniors who are alumni of St. Paul Public Schools are encouraged to apply for the Travelers EDGE Scholarship. In addition to receiving a $7,500 scholarship, recipients also benefit from numerous professional development opportunities and get an inside look at the Insurance and Financial Services industry, including the chance to be considered for competitive internships.

Eligibility Criteria for the Travelers EDGE Scholarship include:
• Saint Paul Public High School alumni
• Full time undergraduate with junior or senior status enrolled in the Day program at Augsburg for the 2013-2014 school year
• Applicants may have any major, but should demonstrate interest in exploring careers in the Insurance and Financial Services Industry
• Minimum GPA of 2.5
• U.S. citizen or permanent resident
• Demonstrate financial need based on the FAFSA

Augsburg Financial Outlook

Please join Tammy McGee, Vice President of Finance and Administration and CFO, for a Focused Conversation relative to the College's Financial Outlook for this year 2012-13 and a preview of the Fiscal 2013-14 Budget, which will remain in-process through the first half of April. After a short overview, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and offer suggestions you might have as we continue to work through these challenging times.

There will be two sessions held Tuesday March 12, 2013, both to take place in the Marshall Room of the Christensen Center. The first session will be 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. and the second session will follow immediately at 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.

Orv Gingerich Retirement Announcement

Dr. Orv Gingerich, Assistant Vice President for International Program has announced he will retire at the end of May. Orv has been a member of the Augsburg community since 2001.

As Augsburg's chief international officer, Orv has played a critical role in leading the College's work to internationalize the campus and its curriculum. Of particular note is Orv's work to expand our partnerships in China and Hong Kong, his role in organizing the Nobel Peace Prize Forum, and his commitment to increasing the diversity of programs offered at Augsburg's Center Global Education (CGE) sites worldwide. Orv has personally accompanied faculty and students on CGE trips to Mexico, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Namibia, and South Africa to enhance the College's understanding of how people learn and grow through international education. The number of Augsburg students studying abroad has doubled during his tenure.

Orv and his wife, Cleta, plan to do long term volunteer work over the next few years. Their first assignment will be to host/hostess the International Guest House in Washington, DC, which is operated by the Mennonite Church. They will provide hospitality and a home-like experience to internationals and Americans traveling to DC.

During the 2013-14 academic year the programs currently under Orv's supervision will be overseen as follows:

URGO will be hosting a PA School Application Information Session to discuss the application timeline, application components, and strategies for producing a high-quality application. You will have the opportunity to hear from alumni who just recently completed the application process and those who are currently in PA school. While the session will be geared toward those who are applying this year, we strongly encourage all those who are interested in PA school to come and learn about the process.

Spring Blood Drive on Wednesday 3/13

If you have not done so yet you still have time to sign up to donate blood on Wednesday 3/13/13. Memorial Blood Centers will be on campus on tomorrow (Wednesday) from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. in East Commons for its annual spring blood drive. Auggies have typically done an awesome job at donating blood at these annual drives.

Keeping Clean Yard Sale

As Spring slowly arrives, we all begin to clean out our closets, dorm spaces, homes and apartments in celebration of warmer weather.

Augsburg Step-Up and members of Project Management Section A are asking for your help by donating your gently used clothing, accessories, dorm room/apartment furnishings, and electronics. Items will be donated to the first-annual Keeping clean Yard Sale, Fundraiser and Informational. Being held on Friday April 5, 2013 in the Oren Gateway Atrium (Date Change) from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.

We as Students of Project Management Section A, are looking to raise awareness and support of Augsburg's Step-Up program, the country's largest residential college recovery program. Every year Augsburg's Step-Up program serves and assists around 85 students from around the country and has served over 600 individuals during its strong sixteen year history.

All the proceeds made from this yard sale will go to the building of a Scholarship fund that would benefit the countless Students within the Step-Up program who cannot afford the ever rising cost of tuition, housing, and books.

With the help of donations from the Augsburg community and the broader surrounding Twin Cities area, we hope to make a difference and show our support for a pivotal group in our Augsburg community. All donations can be made to us in the Christensen Center on:

Education AfA undergrad students and MAE graduate students are encouraged to join us Saturday, March 16, 2013 from 12:10 p.m. to 12:50 p.m. in the Marshall Room, Christensen Center.
