The Center for Global Education for Auggies

The Center for Global Education (CGE) at Augsburg College offers powerful learning experiences that help students broaden their horizons through the semester and summer programs abroad. Coordinated by Augsburg faculty and staff, these programs allow Auggies to study abroad without jeopardizing progress toward their degree.

Students who participate in CGE summer and semester programs can complete a number of requirements at Augsburg campuses in Mexico, Central America and Namibia, such as Liberal Arts Foundation classes in Social and Behavioral Sciences, Fine Arts and Humanities.

All CGE programs fulfill the Augsburg Experience requirement, and Core Skills of Effective Writing, Modern Language, and Lifetime Fitness, can be easily accomplished in any of our sites. In addition, Signature Curriculum requirements can fulfilled through the CGE programs, including Religion 200 and a Senior Keystone course.

Augsburg students automatically receive a discount of $1,000 off any CGE Semester Program! Diversity and Need-Based scholarships are also available.

Writing Lab Hours: Spring Break and Easter

The WL will maintain its regular hours through Friday, March 15, before spring break and resume its schedule on Sunday, March 24. During the week of spring break, hours will be curtailed in accordance with the library schedule. Here is the schedule for the week of spring break:

Friday, March 15: 4:30 - 7 p.m.

Tuesday and Thursday, March 19 and 21: 6 - 9 p.m.

Sunday, March 24: 5 - 8 p.m.

For the Easter break, the WL will maintain regular hours through 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 28. The Lab will be closed on Good Friday, March 29, and Easter Sunday, March 31. Regular hours will resume on Monday, April 1.

Register to Present at Zyzzogeton by Friday

This year's Zyzzogeton Research Symposium will take place on April 19 from 2-4 p.m. in Oren Gateway Center. Zyzzogeton is an opportunity for students to present a poster on research that they have conducted during the past year. Talk with your faculty advisor if you would like to present this year!

Cap and Gown Information

Graduating in May?

The deadline has passed to order online - If you ordered online, you may pick up your cap and gown on April 9 or any time afterward until graduation.
If your gown was not reserved by March 7, a $15.00 late charge will be added to the final cost of your cap and gown. You may stop in the bookstore to purchase your cap and gown on April 9 up until graduation. If you need special sizing, please contact me ASAP.

All May graduation regalia will be in the store ready to purchase on April 9!

Brown and Marubbio Awarded Grants

The Faculty Development Committee congratulates Adriane Brown, Women's Studies, and M. Elise Marubbio, American Indian Studies, as the 2013-14 recipients of the Dean's Internationalization Grants! These grants provide $2,500 to support travel for collaborations with Augsburg's international programs and partners. The grants are designed to encourage faculty and staff to internationalize the curriculum and campus.

Adriane intends to use her grant to work with CGE faculty in Mexico, Nicaragua, and El Salvador to construct an accessible, internationalized, and interdisciplinary seminar based in Minneapolis but technologically connected to geographic locations across the world. She envisions this course as a combination of traditional study, international dialogue, and on-the-ground experience with Twin Cities activists. One essential component of the course would be weekly videoconferences with CGE faculty and activists as well as with college students and faculty from other parts of the world. The videoconferences would engage people in dialogues about topics that might range from pressing issues in their geographic area, international perceptions of the United States, or an article on a topic of shared interest. The committee believes this could be a model for creating more accessible international experiences for all students.

Elise will use her grant to return to Bolivia as a participant of the Q(C)ollaysuyu Collaboration's Western Hemispheric Indigenous Collaborative. The Q(C)ollaysuyu Collaboration is made up of community members and organizations that are Indigenous grassroots activists and educators. They work on a plurinational level with Indigenous organizations, grassroots initiatives, and communities to address global environmental issues as they affect Indigenous communities in the western hemisphere. This collaboration will continue her development of teaching, scholarship, and service relationships that will result in: 1) ongoing global curricular development for AIS 105, 364, 305/490 classes as well as the development of an interdisciplinary Global Indigenous Issues of the Americas course; 2) ongoing research into Indigenous film locally and globally, resulting in a book; and 3) continuing service as an American Indian studies faculty and a liaison between Augsburg and our Indigenous communities locally and globally.

Rising juniors and seniors who are alumni of St. Paul Public Schools are encouraged to apply for the Travelers EDGE Scholarship. In addition to receiving a $7,500 scholarship, recipients also benefit from numerous professional development opportunities and get an inside look at the Insurance and Financial Services industry, including the chance to be considered for competitive internships.

Eligibility Criteria for the Travelers EDGE Scholarship include:
• Saint Paul Public High School alumni
• Full time undergraduate with junior or senior status enrolled in the Day program at Augsburg for the 2013-2014 school year
• Applicants may have any major, but should demonstrate interest in exploring careers in the Insurance and Financial Services Industry
• Minimum GPA of 2.5
• U.S. citizen or permanent resident
• Demonstrate financial need based on the FAFSA

McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Fall 2013

Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for admission Fall 2013. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academic preparation and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair teams you with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps you to achieve that dream.

The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops, advising in preparation for doctoral degrees. Also, programming assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. You will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4,000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2014.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible you must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, eligible applicants are either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

BIOGRAPHY: Olivia Olivares was born in California. She is Associate Professor of Learning Resources Services at Saint Cloud State University, a position she has held since 2007. At SCSU, she works primarily with students and faculty of the Herberger Business School. She has earned Bachelor's degrees in History and Political Science from Northern Arizona University and a Master of Arts in Library and Information Science from the University of Arizona. Professor Olivares is the President of the Minnesota Network of Latinos in Higher Education, and writes on issues related to library instruction and education.

Kate Woolever - Artist Talk

Please join Kate Woolever (2010 Augsburg graduate) at 6:00 p.m., Thursday March 14, 2013 in the basement of Old Main for a discussion about her photographs and interviews taken during a trip to Bangladesh. Woolever who currently teaches at St. Paul Preparatory School was selected as one of five teachers from across the United States to participate in an exchange program through World Savvy and the U.S. State Department.

Last December she took 30 high school students to study the environmental, social, economic, and political impacts of climate change. Teachers and students spent one month living with host families while participating in research and service projects with local Bangladeshi students. Woolever lived in Rayer Bazar, a slum in Dhaka, fulfilling her service project through the interviewing and documenting of local climate refugees.

The Housing Expo takes place on APRIL 2, 2013 in the dining hall of Christensen Center.

Things to have before Housing Expo!

Look at your student account on-line. If there's an "ARHOLD" on your student account please email the Enrollment Center at enroll@augsburg.edu or call 612-330-1046 to correct this hold. Verify your class status is correct. Be registered for at least one spring semester Day class.

All Day students will receive a computer generated, randomly assigned, selection number based on class status. Those with the highest numbers will be the first to choose their housing for 2013-2014.

Blood Drive TODAY

This is a reminder that Memorial Blood Center will be on campus today from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the East Commons for the annual spring blood drive. Before you get ready to head out for spring break consider donating blood to help save lives.

If you did not get to pre-register for a donation time, walk-ins are always welcome. So stop up to the East Commons TODAY! If you are donating, please be sure to eat good meals today, drink a lot of water and bring a photo ID to the blood drive.

Keeping Clean Yard Sale

As Spring slowly arrives, we all begin to clean out our closets, dorm spaces, homes and apartments in celebration of warmer weather.

Augsburg Step-Up and members of Project Management Section A are asking for your help by donating your gently used clothing, accessories, dorm room/apartment furnishings, and electronics. Items will be donated to the first-annual Keeping clean Yard Sale, Fundraiser and Informational. Being held on Friday April 5, 2013 in the Oren Gateway Atrium (Date Change) from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.

We as Students of Project Management Section A, are looking to raise awareness and support of Augsburg's Step-Up program, the country's largest residential college recovery program. Every year Augsburg's Step-Up program serves and assists around 85 students from around the country and has served over 600 individuals during its strong sixteen year history.

All the proceeds made from this yard sale will go to the building of a Scholarship fund that would benefit the countless Students within the Step-Up program who cannot afford the ever rising cost of tuition, housing, and books.

With the help of donations from the Augsburg community and the broader surrounding Twin Cities area, we hope to make a difference and show our support for a pivotal group in our Augsburg community. All donations can be made to us in the Christensen Center on:
