Sabo Scholars and Scholarships: Feb 22 Deadline

SABO SCHOLARS/SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE for 5 students who will be Juniors in 2013-14. Recipients will demonstrate an interest in and commitment to engagement in the political process, public policy issues and careers in public service. Each Sabo Scholar receives a $2000 scholarship [divided equally between the 2 semesters].

Expectations of Sabo Scholars include collaborating with Representative Martin Sabo, Sabo Professor Garry Hesser, and Senior Faculty Fellows to identify and create opportunities for Augsburg students to engage more fully in public policy issues, the political process and exploring career in public service. In addition, the Sabo Scholars help to shape the present endeavors and future direction of the Sabo Center. The Scholars meet monthly with Representative Sabo, Sabo Professor Hesser, Sr. Fellows & local alums and persons engaged in public service, policy related work and the political process. The deadline for application is February 22.

TFAPS – Hybrid Learning Implementation

All faculty are invited to participate in two workshops offered by CTL and IT to support weekend and graduate faculty who are creating "hybrid" courses for 2013-14. If you are satisfied with the basic design of your courses, you only need to participate in the Moodle Labs to learn best practices for online learning and how to meet GAAC/AAC requirements for hybrid learning.

If you would like to improve the underlying design of your courses, you will also benefit from the integrated course design workshop.

Prerequisite: Please watch the screencasts in the Overview section of the Course Design Support Site (http://moodle.augsburg.edu/moodle2013/course/view.php?id=35) before coming to these sessions.

Dean's Internationalization Grant

Applications due February 15

The purpose of the Dean's Internationalization Summer Travel Grant is to support collaborations with our international programs and partners that will help internationalize scholarship, teaching, and service at Augsburg College. The expectation is that recipients will develop relationships with others in the Augsburg international partner network, identify opportunities for collaboration, and develop a plan to implement at least one of these opportunities.

Two Dean's Internationalization Summer Travel Grants of up to $2500 are awarded to full-time faculty or staff for international travel to support teaching, scholarship, or service collaborations with Augsburg International Programs or Partner Institutions that facilitate internationalizing the Augsburg campus and curriculum.

Submit proposals using the Dean's Internationalization Summer Travel Grant application (available at http://inside.augsburg.edu/ctl/grant-applications/deans-internationalization-application/ ). Proposals will include a description of the collaboration, explanation of how it will facilitate internationalization of the campus or curriculum, and an outline of the tasks you intend to accomplish. Applications are due February 15, 2013 for travel during Summer 2013; these are reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee and Vice President of International Programs and announced in early March.

CTL Summer Scholarship Grants

Applications due March 15

The purpose of the Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants and the Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants is to support well-defined faculty scholarship projects. The expectation is that receipt of the grant will make it possible for faculty to accelerate completion of a significant project.

Two $4,000 Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2013. All tenured or tenure-track, full-time faculty who are in at least the second year of their contract are eligible to apply.

Three $2,000 Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2013. All full-time faculty are eligible to apply; priority is given to tenure-track faculty who have not received this grant in the previous three years.

Please complete the online Summer Scholarship application form (available at http://inside.augsburg.edu/ctl/grant-applications/summer-scholarship-application/) describing the project, explaining its potential significance, summarizing the work already accomplished, providing a timetable and plan for completion, explaining how it will accelerate project completion, and describing how it fits with your department's definition of scholarship. Submit a curriculum vitae (pdf document, please) as an email attachment to ctl@augsburg.edu. Applications should be submitted no later than March 15, 2013.

Applications will be reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee, and awards will be announced in early April. All grant recipients must submit a progress report by September 1, 2013. Recipients of the Dean's Scholarship Grant must submit a short final report by February 1, 2014.

In Sacred Ground, author and renowned interfaith leader and last semester's Christensen Convocation speaker Eboo Patel says this prejudice is not just a problem for Muslims but a challenge to the very idea of America. Patel shows us that Americans from George Washington to Martin Luther King Jr. have been "interfaith leaders," illustrating how the forces of pluralism in America have time and again defeated the forces of prejudice. And now a new generation needs to rise up and confront the anti-Muslim prejudice of our era. To this end, Patel offers a primer in the art and science of interfaith work, bringing to life the growing body of research on how faith can be a bridge of cooperation rather than a barrier of division and sharing stories from the frontlines of interfaith activism.

McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Fall 2013

Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for admission Fall 2013. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academic preparation and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair teams you with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps you to achieve that dream.

The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops, advising in preparation for doctoral degrees. Also, programming assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. You will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2014.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible you must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, eligible applicants are either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Scholastic Connections Applications Now Available

Scholastic Connections is a scholarship and mentorship program for undergraduate students of color (American Indian, Hispanic/Latino, Pan-Afrikan, and Pan Asian) at Augsburg College. Students who are successful in their application process and are selected to participate, receive a $5000 scholarship and are paired with a successful alum of color that serves as mentor for the Scholar.

Five "new" Scholars will be selected for the program for 2013-14.

Eligibility Criteria:
Current Augsburg student or advanced-standing transfer student
Demonstrated financial need
Demonstrated leadership ability or potential
Demonstrated community involvement on or off campus
GPA of 2.0 or higher

Exploring Culture at Alliance Française

Le Sacre du Printemps, a lecture with Mark Russell Smith

One hundred years ago, Le Sacre du Printemps, or The Right of Spring, made its world première at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. The costumes, choreography and storyline created scandal and a fierce reaction from the audience.

On Feb 26, the Joffrey Ballet will interpret Stravinski's work that changed dance forever. Mark Russell Smith will conduct the University of Minnesota Orchestra for this one-of-a-kind event.

Join Alliance Française in the Grande Salle for a lecture by Mark Russell Smith to learn more about the legacy of Le Sacre du Printemps on the arts today. Five members of the orchestra will join us in the Grande Salle for a sneak peek performance.

Exploring Culture: Gabriela Mistral Poetry Event

Join with the Zorongo community on Sunday, February 17th for a lively and engaging discussion of the Locas Mujeres poems of Chilean educator, activist, diplomat and Nobel Laureate Gabriela Mistral.

Carleton College professor and Zorongo Flamenco board member Silvia López will cover several of the Locas Mujeres poems in a brief discussion. These poems form part of the inspiration for Zorongo's upcoming show Locas Mujeres y Más/Madwomen and More at The Cowles Center, opening March 8th.

Mardi Gras Madrigals—10th anniversary! 2/12, 6:30

Huzzah! It's time once again for Mardi Gras Madrigals! This is the midwinter party you cannot miss. Come celebrate with the Goliard Society of Medievalists.

As always, there will be a full medieval feast—eaten with your hands. This year, the internationally acclaimed early music group The Rose Ensemble will return to Mardi Gras Madrigals. We also have special guests: the Renaissance Quartet, a juggling troupe from Edina High School. There will be lots of goofiness, buffoonery, and, of course, beautiful music from invited high school choirs and Augsburg students and alums. Don't miss it!

Mardi Gras Madrigals takes place on Tuesday, February 12 in Hoversten Chapel. Doors open at 6:30pm. Box office opens at 6pm. Tickets are $20. Augsburg students get in free, but you must still make a reservation.

Marilyn Pearson Florian to Receive MGWSD Award

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College Assistant Athletic Director Marilyn Pearson Florian '76 will receive a Special Merit Award from the Minnesota Coalition of Women in Athletic Leadership during the 27th annual Minnesota Girls and Women in Sports Day on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 12 p.m. at the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul.

Pearson Florian is receiving one of four Special Merit Awards given during Wednesday's event, joining a group of Minnesota's inspiring and influential athletic leaders. A total of 20 individuals will receive awards in five categories during the ceremony. The event is free and open to the public.

A 1976 Augsburg alumnae and 1997 inductee into the Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame, Pearson Florian has served as a member of the Augsburg athletic department since 1980 as a teacher, coach and administrator. She served as head coach for Augsburg's volleyball team from 1981-98, claiming a school-record 271 victories in her career. Her Auggies reached the NCAA Division III national playoffs in 1982 and finished as Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference runners-up twice. She also served as Augsburg's women's basketball head coach from 1980-85, compiling a school-record 54 victories in five seasons.

As an administrator, Pearson Florian served as Augsburg's women's athletic director from 1988 to 2007, and as assistant athletic director since 2007. She also serves as the department's Senior Woman Administrator. An assistant professor in the Augsburg health and physical education department, she served as the department chair from 1999 to 2008.

During her tenure as an athletic administrator at Augsburg, the school has added five women's sports (golf, cross country, ice hockey, swimming and diving, and lacrosse) and has steadily increased the number of opportunities for Auggie female student-athletes. She initiated the induction of women athletes into Augsburg's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988, and created an athletic lettering program for female student-athletes in 1989.

Pearson Florian has been a member of the athletic department staff during two historic women's sport additions at Augsburg; in 1995, when the school became the first college or university in the Midwest to add women's ice hockey as a varsity sport, and in 2012, when Augsburg announced that it would be the first college or university in Minnesota to add women's lacrosse as a varsity sport.

Pearson Florian is regarded as one of the top female student-athletes to ever compete at Augsburg, as a three-sport star (volleyball, basketball and softball) during her Auggie career. She helped lead the Auggie volleyball team to a 52-25 record her last two seasons, reaching the AIAW regional semifinals in 1975. During Augsburg's 40th Anniversary of Women's Athletics celebration in November, she was named to the 10-member 1970s All-Decade Team.

Outside of Augsburg, Pearson Florian has served on the board of the Minnesota Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, and has lobbied at the State Capitol for increased time requirements for health and physical education in the public schools.

Benefit Concert for Avenues for Homeless Youth

Announcing: New Day Rising --- Vocal Point Chorus's Annual Benefit Concert featuring Jearlyn Steele and the Youth Chorale of Central Minnesota

Who benefits? You - the music will be great. But more importantly Avenues for Homeless Youth, a non-profit that provides emergency shelter, short-term housing and supportive services for homeless youth.

When? February 9 and 10 at 4 p.m.

Where? Central Presbyterian Church, Downtown St. Paul

How does it work? Buy a ticket ($15 Adults/$5 Students advance sales or $20 adults at the door). Ticket revenue supports cost of production. Bring a free-will donation to the concert, 100% of which will go to support Avenues for Homeless Youth. Have your contribution matched by the Otto Bremer Foundation.
